Most people would assume no, but ball striking is the best part of my game and it keeps getting better. I dont shoot any worse with my blades then I did with game improvement irons, and I have consistently been getting better since the switch.

Now only if I had a short game...

Is there really such a thing anymore as a standard player's iron? Given the number of pros that hit cavity backs, or muscle backs, or a mixed set of cavities in the long irons and blades for short irons, how do you judge what is "too good" for you to play? I started playing Callaway Fusions, and then when they got stolen I started playing X-20s, which I hated, then moved to X-forged, which I like better, and then tried out some of my buddy's MP-57s, which I immediately fell in love with and are perfect for my game. I have played around with occasionally swapping in an 8, 9, PW from a set of MP-67s, and that works pretty well for me, but it changes my gaps a bit, so I've gone back to MP-57s. I'm a 12 now, and was a 24 when I started playing with my 57s, and frankly I think they made me a better player. I know they made me want to be a better player, so I ended up practicing more and going out every chance I could get, so perhaps there's a little of the chicken-or-the-egg syndrome going on, but I don't really think game improvement irons are that great. In the end, it seems to be either a personal preference, or lucking onto something that works for you.

It's tough to find us stragglers who still play the 975J. Are you still enjoying yours? I've been tempted to pick up something new. Buying into the technology hype a little, I guess.

I love it. If I hadn't paid all that money and had it fit on the Titleist Launch Monitor I might consider something else, but so far, I haven't come across anything I can hit better.

Cheers, Allan

Hey man, how do you like those Eidelon wedges? The shop that will be building my set of Mizuno's carries them but I had never heard of them before. They rave about them though.

I can't help but lust over much of the new equipment that comes out each year that is played by the tour players. I LOVE the way just about anything that Davis Love III or Tiger Woods plays, but I know I'm just not good enough to make it work in my game.

If you want "players" kit, buy it. It's not that hard to use and people make too much fuss about playing blades or whatever. I don't wish I had more forgiving kit; if I hit a bad shot, I know it's me and not the kit and I just need to work at it some more.

I actually joined the forum to ask the same question. I will be posting my own topic soon but I bought mp-60's last year and have had mixed results using them.

I was actually thinking of going backwards and getting GI irons. I was a 10 handicap a few years ago but am shooting in the upper 80's now. I think the mp-60s have made me realize im not as good as my equipment...

This year it's the AP2s. I really, really, really, want to buy a set, but I have this thought in my head - you aren't a single digit HCP, so you can't play those irons.

dude GET THEM if you want them. if they instill confidence in you...if you can hit it pure...hit it well...etc then who cares what your HC is...at least that's my opinion.

I was roughly a 15 - 17 when I picked up my MP-60's at the end of '07..it was my 1st year.. but i didn't care..i hit them well. 1 year later i'm shooting in the 70's and low 80's on a consistent basis with them... if you get them... and you're using a CB, it takes some getting used to...but you'll be fine after a week or 2 on the range dialing the distances in.... i know i'm not awesome enough to use what I have in the bag...but i went with stuff that i could play with now that i won't have to replace the better i get. i'm not looking to replace my irons for a good 7 - 10 years. unless technology really really really really hugely makes that big of a difference. if you can hit it...hit it

I went from game improvement Ping G5 irons to Ping S59 which are a players club. I hit these things much better then the G5's and not sure why. I don't think you should get caught up in the "type" but try what you want to play. If they work great, if not you can say you tried them. And maybe, as in my strange case, the players irons will work better for you (due to less offset, thinner top line and narrower sole)....

    • So, Newey is out at Red Bull. Where does he go in a year? Is Max still with RBR in 2026? Hmmmm.
    • August 2010 Woodfin Ridge 18th hole Playing in a large tournament with a slew of friends and the last day was two man best ball. The 18th, when it was bent grass, was very fast due to a steep slope on the right side. I had seen many people over the years putt off the green from above the hole. I hit a great drive and 3W to 30’ left of the hole. With everyone watching my partner hit it way too fast and never high enough and his ball rolled all the way to the bottom of the green.  I hit mine much higher and the ball came to rest about 20” above the hole. Then it slowly started trickling towards the hole for a walkoff eagle! Nobody said anything except my partner who was yelling pretty loudly. I looked at the crowd and told them it was okay to clap because it was a great putt, and they gave me a bunch of polite golf claps and brought me a beer!
    • Day 127: 5/2/24 Stack Full Speed spectrum training session 6/24. Training speed was 5 mph higher than previous high, as was e-speed. Still not as high as I have done in previous programs, but just 1 mph lower. Battling through a neck issue, and possible trigger fingers. Happy with results.
    • Day 49. Played 9 from tees a bit beyond my comfort zone and was humbled. Hit a couple good shots so will take that at least.
    • +12 47, and never lost a ball or had a penalty. Got the snap hooks off the tee for the first 3 holes. So, playing the punch out game. Probably had like 20 putts. Bad short game day. The greens were weirdly firm but slow. I just don’t get spin out of the rough. I had a SW, with good height hit middle half of the green and end up almost off the back of the green. I know what I was doing with the full swing. Bad habits creeping in.
