I played hockey since I could walk, and started weight training around 13. Do cardio 5-6 days a week.

There is no such thing as a 'golf workout' or a 'hockey' workout, etc etc. Being in top shape will definately improve your game by leaps and bounds. As proper conditioning will in any sport. So dont look for a golf workout, just train to get in, or stay in shape.

About the best way to improve dynamic strength (which is what we use when swinging a golf club), would be to get proficient in the use of kettle bells. They are extremely difficult to use, and learn to use, and you need to start out light so you dont hurt yourself, but they really are wonderful fitness tools.

Nothing is more important than proper nutrition though.

In the Ogio Kingpin bag:

I agree with the kettle bells statement! They are awesome! We used them a lot in our MMA training.

I had never really heard of P90X before this thread. If you order the program, is there additional things to buy? Equipment of any kind?

I have the program but never used it.

Pretty sure you need some free weights or resistance bands. The little ive watched of the video had people doing chin ups so you need a bar for that. I have resistance bands coming in the mail. Doing this Wii Fit challenge thing. Going to use the Wii Fit for balance and stretching. P90X to tone and build muscle.

I have a couple pairs of dumbbells and some resistance bands. While it's not quite the same, you can use the heavy bands for doing "pull ups"

I have the program but never used it.

Don't discount P90X for stretching. That first two weeks had me more flexible than I'd ever been. You do yoga once a week, and stretching of some kind every day.

And for some extra motivation, my coach, Josh. P90X Results.

I have been going to BodyPump classes for one and a half year. I have seen some changes it has had on my golf game, some longer shots, better balance, stronger back (did have back problems before). It is not for everyone, you gotta enjoy the music so if your a the LedZeppelin or Doors type, I guess you will be turned off by the music.

And as far as nutrition goes, it is much more important than workout as stated above.

In my bag:Driver: 910D2, 10.25˚, Aldila RIP, Fairway: 904F, 15˚, YS-6FW+ Stiff, Hybrid: Titleist 910H, Irons: S-58, 4-PW, DG S300, Wedges: Wishon 52˚, 56˚, Putter: Odyssey Black series i 1

Oh yeah...they will "sell" you everything you need! No really, they try to sell you everything under the sun. It just depends on what you have already and what you think you will need. The only extra thing I bought was the chin up bar but you can actually get one of those pretty cheap from a sporting goods store. I already had dumbbells, supplements, etc...so I didn't buy anything else. As far as having to have the stuff, you really don't need it. Depending on your strength, you would need like a set of 5 through 15lb dumbbells. Don't go too heavy though because these exercises are much tougher than they seem!

Honestly a good work out for golf is as simple as you could ask for.

Core muscle groups (no not abs, but those help) I'm talking about your major muscle groups. Legs, Back, Chest, Arms, and abs. Use only free weights, this builds the stabilizer muscles that you don't get with machines (important to balance i.e. golf)

Cardio, nothing ridiculous just keep it up. I try to walk/jog/run 2 miles 3 times a week.

Flexibility this is the key, because as you lift weights if you don't stretch etc you will be come very tight and rigid. You should be stretching before/after lifting weights anyways.

DIET, the most crucial part (the part I struggle with the most) I have a fiend like addiction to Pepsi. Other than that I eat pretty well, lots of meat, carbs (I <3 carbs). Get a protein drink that tastes good to you, drink one in the morning, 1-2 hours prior to working out, no less that 15mins after work out.

Some one said P90X, this is a great program in all honesty. I put my fiance on it, she couldn't walk for a week :)

Most people starting off can do most work outs if you just have some weights and a bench, and something to do pull ups on, i use the I beam in my basement a lot.

I have a really good free weight setup and have the p90x stuff. I have actually been working out for years but never specifically for a sport. I was looking for more "swing" type workouts etc....I have pretty much found everything I was looking for now. The TPI institute website is really good for the unique workouts I was looking for. I also have a buddy that is a PT and is TPI certified. He is going to put me through a mobility assessment and then generate me a workout based on this for my flexibility. Thanks for all of the replies guys.

I've been doing the p90x routine for about a month now, and I would recommend it for an off-season workout.

If your looking for swing type of, I suggest Lots of lower back, and rotating ab work outs, then grab weights and work on resistance turns, easier to do with cables/rubber bands, keep your lower body still and rotate as you would swinging. The only problem with this is it can ruin your tempo, and muscle memory through rotation, to combat this I do 3 heights, I will do turns with the cable from the ground, middle and above my head.

There are a lot of ways you can go about doing work outs for swing, but i think its just finding one that works for you. Also depends on what your trying to accomplish, club head speed, rotation, balance over the ball, etc.

Well, I am going to kind of do it in steps. The main thing I want to work and the thing I will work on first and foremost is my flexibility. Once I get started on that and get comfortable with that, then I will work on balance, rotation, and then club head speed. Thanks

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
