It's time for my spring golf gift to myself. I'm torn between a set of Nike Victory Red split cavity backs or a twilight membership.

The attraction to the membership is unlimited use of the driving range and the chance to get out once in awhile and play. "Normally" I would choose the membership because I love to play, but now I have a 2 yr old daughter and 6 month old son so the availability of time is limited. My wife is very understanding, but I don't know if she's good with a couple days a week and some weekend practice time. That might be pushing it.

The downside to the membership is twilight. It starts at 3:00 (northern Colorado). If I could play earlier, I'd play more so it didn't have as much of an impact on the evenings with the family.

On to the irons... I haven't even hit the Nike's yet, but I haven't read one bad review on them. A long time ago I played the pro combo's and I loved that set of clubs. Now I play Hogan Apex Plus. I think the hogan's are one of the best "feeling" sets of irons I've ever hit, but this particular set just doesn't do it for me. I'm a consistent ball striker, there's just something about this set. It could be completely mental, but I bet most of you know how "real" of a problem that can be in golf.

So, I can gamble on the chance I will get to play and practice enough to recoup the upfront cost of the membership... or I could purchase a set of irons that I will use for multiple years...

What would you do? I just don't know that I will have the time to get my money out of the membership. Hmmmmm..... Oh, and I love to buy clubs. So I have to balance that out. There's a good chance next year there will be something new that I have to have.

i would try out the nikes first. and if you do like to buy clubs(same here) then maybe buy them but say that if your schedule opens up next year then you'll buy the membership. what course is it at? I know the broadlands does this and it really helps. Also if you're looking to improve your game then think about which one would do that.

Tough call.

Getting the irons would not interfere with your time and you could practice some on other driving ranges.....at your convenience.

A membership to a club is pointless, in my opinion, unless you can play enough there to make it worthwhile. With the age of the kids...that may be tough.

Those are some sweet looking irons. I think Nike will do well with them.

Go for irons while you have the cash. Kids getting really expensive really quickly. Besides everyone knows once you get new clubs, then birthday presents and christmas presents can consist of new golf shoes, new golf bag! Beats the heck out of a new tie!

I have to say get the membership, the irons are nice but I play with alot of different people and I can honestly say that equipment really doesnt mean that much unless your a really low handicapp. As the membership goes if you want to get better ask any pro, the range and the course is where its at, and you picked the wrong sport to get good at if you dont want to make sacrifices.... my 2cents

I would personally choose the membership. :] Then again, I have my dream set so I don't have to worry about deciding on new irons. Tough call for you dude, but since you're not too happy with your sticks I say go for the Victory Reds.

I would choose the irons, if I were in your place. You are already questioning the membership's worth, plus the Hogan's "just aren't doing it for you". If you're having a mental block with the equipment, you probably won't play to your full ability with that equipment.

Id agree that if your free time is somewhat limited, that you may not get your money's worth out of a membership. If you arent playing at least 2-3 times a week, a membership really isnt worth it.
Sounds like new irons are the way to go.

or, you could win this raffle that another site is throwing right now that is giving away a set of new Nike VR irons (or even a new R9 driver, or other killer items). that way you'd get your irons for free PLUS your membership!

Irons and maybe a membership next year? So you pay for a membership that you might not have lots of time to play and with irons that you feel just dont work for you. Or get new irons and pay a little to get out this year and maybe a membership next year

Can you use the driving range anytime, or is that after 3pm only too? I'd say get the membership and wear out the range. You could try some other Hogan irons off ebay for cheap. If I recall, those Apex Plus have way more offset than all the rest, I didn't much care for them.

If it were me I'd get the irons. Everyone loves new equipment and I wouldn't want to jeopardize time with family. Especially if your wife is understanding now. If you push it to try to get your money's worth out of your membership, your wife might become less understanding and also resent that you bought the membership.

I agree with some of the other people ... get the irons & worry about the membership later.

Since you already feel like your current irons "don't do it for you", don't waste time out on the range hitting clubs that you don't like. Get the irons, and see how much time you actually CAN spend on the range. If you find that you can spend alot of time practicing, get the membership next year (or ask for it as an X-Mas present!).

A little off topic ... but since there are several Colorado people in here I thought I'd ask: how do you guys practice over the winter?

I'm in South Denver, and in the winter months I find it almost impossible to practice. I don't have anything indoors that I can go to ... and paying several hundred bucks for a winter-long pass to practice inside a small room at GolfTec doesn't seem like a very fun alternative.

Do you guys brave the elements & go to the range in winter coats to hit balls?

    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
