If FIGJAM does make it, it will be by default. He may have trouble getting in clubhouse doors if his ego gets any bigger though lol.

Also, it should make things slightly more interesting at the top if he did unseat Tiger from the top spot for a while.

It is not Phills fault that Tiger got hurt nor is it Tigers but if the rules say phill goes to #1 then he should be.IMO Tiger will return to form but not as quick as everyone thinks, his leg was more messed up than he lets on I think.

I'd be more interested if we are still having this conversation a year from now; it would show they had both been playing well over the year and would mean more having Tiger back for a full year.

Sheesh, you mean that we gotta keep our mouths shut about this issue for a whole year ..

A very wise post I'm sure Sir, but it aint gonna happen, not with us puppies. OK, I've become hooked on this sort of thread like the worst of them here on Erik's forum. Anyone know of an antidote other than cold turkey?
Help me ................

flap: didn't it look to you that Tiger was in excellent shape at Doral, knee-wise? He seemed very happy about how it went in that department, which is ominous for his competitors. We shall see.

His leg did look fine but it was major surgery and the strain he exerts on it is huge. Most other sports it would be a calender year to get back but we shall see.

The number 1 ranking will mean something if Phil keeps hold of it. Sure he might not have got it if Tiger wasn't hurt but if Tiger couldn't get it back that means Phil would have to be considered the best. Of course that's not actually going to happen because in real life Tiger is miles ahead of Phil and won't let it happen.

even if phil got it he wouldnt deserve it.... tiger got hurt and thats the only reason he ever had a chance at it.

Its like me winning a 100 meter sprint against the world record holder just because the world record holder tripped and broke both his legs.

A win by default is weak and phil knows it, as does the rest of the golfing world.

Flap: yes, you have to wonder how the new knee will hold up to the strain of that amazing action. I also wonder what the orthopods are thinking about the matter ....

Ian: A person "deserves" the #1 spot when they beat the available competitors. Phil would certainly fully "deserve" the #1 spot if he gets it. If Tiger wants to retain the #1 spot, he's gotta have to show he still "deserves" to have it. If he's too incapacitated to do so, he won't be the player he once was - sic transit gloria golfii.

If you win the 100 meters because someone broke his legs, you beat the other guys. You wouldn't have won by default. btw, are you that good of a runner? In sport, favorites fail to win for extraneous reasons rather often, it's in the nature of sport. Tough luck.

Ditto that. Even Phil would admit that a #1 rank at this point wouldn't mean anything. He said as much in his post-round interview Sunday.

I agree. And I'm glad to see you have upgraded your avatar.

If Tiger get back to his "A" game and Phil can beat him 7 out of 10 times in the future, then Phil deserves No. 1. My opion is it will be a cold day in Hell before Phil can even come close to taking Tiger 7 out of 10 times.
