Do you grab down on the grip when chipping and pitching?

I was wondering if it's normal to do this. I almost grip down for every shot I take with my wedges. I rarely hit a full shot, so I grip down to get better control. The downside is that the grip is more narrow, which makes the contact with the club a little less stable.

Anyone used larger grips for their wedges to get better contact with it?

I almost always grip down on my wedges for short shots, for better control. My hands aren't large, so the narrower part of the grip doesn't bother me.

I have also gripped down on longer irons for better control, especially toward the end of round, when I may be a bit tired. I may compensate for gripping down by taking a longer club and swinging easy.

It also changes the swingwieght and the lie angle. For those reasons, I don't do it unless my ball is above my feet.

Sometimes. If Im chipping with an 8-iron I will grip way down on it and use a putting stroke. (I find it a lot easier to chip that way) Also, if Im pitching and the ball is above my feet I will grip down on.

I grip down on chips and some pitches. If the ball has a good lie for a flop shot, I do not grip down as much to allow for extra speed.

As for pitches. My regular 3 to 9 swing with a SW will carry about 75 yards. If I need 60, I can simply grip down and know I'll get there.

Yes, I do this if i have a tighter lie, or if its a short chip.

If you don't like the narrow grip, try something with less taper.

Yes, always grip down some on less than full shots with your wedges. By doing so it helps corrects the lie angle to some extent. ( alot of variables are involved with short shots such as open stance and the opening the club face. Are you closing the club face to get more roll.) In other words when making short shots you want to make sure you lie angle of the club level and square to the target when you make contact with the ball. As for the grip, if its not comfortable then by all means change it to a larger one. You can also make the bottom half of the grip larger by adding tape under the grip only to the bottom half.

YES!

I alway grip down almost to the metal on ALL chip shots, and MOST of my pitch shots (depending on the length on the shot).

I use Player Sofftie grips just for the reason that they are "fatter" under the right hand, so when you choke up on the club, you still have some grip to hold on to....

Sometimes.

My son and I hit some range balls and chipped and putted for a couple of hours this afternoon. I went back to the basics and set up almost exactly like you describe....just like putting....same grip...same eye position....simular stroke....etc.

The ball popped up over the fringe grass and began rolling 2-3 feet from the edge and was very predictable....almost effortless. Such an easy method. I was doing this to show him and easy way to do it....and fell right back into the groove myself. I simply varied the iron based on the amount of carry and roll I needed. I'll keep at this a while....and then hope he never asks me how to hit short wedges.....we'll both go take a lesson for this.

i grip slightly down for pitch shots and i grip to bottom of the grip for chipping.
but i use a putting stroke for all my chips (bump and run), i find it helps my consistency. i also do not wear my glove when pitching or chipping.

    • Imma throw a dart in the dark as no one can tell what is happening once every fourth iron shot per your OP. This might sound counterintuitive but if ball position is too far back in the stance folks are known to throw down clubhead steeply. Could be happening. And yes, @billchaois not wrong; clubhead tends to bottom out wherever your pressure is. So slide forward (not sway), then hit.
    • Day 300 (!): did a stack session.
    • Day 24: Missed my weekly round due to a last minute little league makeup game this morning. Managed to get in some backswing rehearsals while grilling sausages for dinner, and then putted around the office/laundry room after dinner.
    • but I don't understand how that's possible you still want your head to stay back you don't want the upper body coming forward and plus I've tried feeling that and it made my fat shots worse and I then tend to pull and sky all my shots especially with driver because I get in front of it dont need force plates to see i finish on my left side
