I see Phil has a new short game DVD that was recently released. Has anyone seen it or is thinking of buying it. I'm wondering if it is worth the $50.

Since he's one of the best short game artist's I've ever seen the thought of buying the DVD crosses my mind, but the 64* full swing, flop shot from 25 yards out isn't my style of play at all. So for me it'd be a waste of money but it depends on your style of the short game.

I agree with bogeyhitter25. I have never had the need for a 25foot flop or 64* full swing, ever. I guess if you like this style of short game, then buy it.

You've got to love Phil's short game - imagination and skill but I'd have to agree with earlier posters - flop shots and 64 degree wedges just get us mid & high handicappers in trouble. Learning to chip and pitch with consistency has to be our goal. Maybe the flair will come later. Cheers

I'm sure the video consist of more than flop shots with a 64º. No doubt he's one of the best on the short game.

Yeah, I agree with the previous posters. He is one of the best but I'd think that you need a lot of practice and discipline to play his style.

I have to disagree here.
I just watched the dvd yesterday and thought it was pretty helpful. He actually completely simplifies the short game. He shows how he only uses one method the "hinge and hold" to hit everything from a tiny chip, to a bump and run 9 iron, to the huge flop. Really simple AND effective. Tried it out yesterday. I was already doing something similar, but this was even better. If you watch highlights of Tiger around the greens he uses the same technique. A perfect example is the famous chip at 16 at the masters...hinge and hold. Phil delivers the whole thing with a funny and light hearted approach.

The putting technique part is pretty different than most instruction. He advocates the ball being outside and forward of the eyes. Pretty tough to get used to, i tried it but it is too big a change for me for now. The advice on green reading is good, not great. He offers good drills and a good short game plan in general. It's also great watching him hit the shots, he'as a master to say the least.

I would recommend it!

64 deg lob wedge flop shot??

Yeah, that was about 5 minutes out of 1.5 hours.

This is a great dvd set. Two disc. Best I have seen yet. Covers putting, chipping, pitching/lob, and bunker play. I recommend this dvd set to anyone wanting to improve their shortgame.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
