I was playing around with my swing and noticed something oddly out of whack.
I took a full turn around to the top of my backswing and paused to look back at it. Instead of the club face being on a nice line the same as my plane angle, it was about 90º closed to it. The toe of the driver was sticking up in the air.

I came back down to address and everything seemed normal. Had about a 2 to 2.5 knuckle strong grip, but I wouldn't think that would close it so much at the top. I took it back to the top of the backswing (it was still 90º closed) and, while keeping a flat left wrist, turned the club to the proper line so the face was in line with my arm line. I took it back down to address and my grip was extremely weak with the "v"s pointing to the left side of my face. I had 0 knuckles showing from the top.

Thoughts? What am I doing wrong?

Maybe your forearm rotation is screwing it up?

If your club face is sqare at impact, I wouldn't worry about it. Lots of great players have had a "closed" face at the top. Being square at impact is what matters.

You are going to totaly mess yourself up if you listen to too many people on here about your swing. You will turn into the next charles barkley and you will have to give Hank a call! If your making solid contact then dont over think it but if you have a few issues talk to an instructor and get it fixed properly because the last thing you want is to have your swing looking like a speech impppeeedddoooommmeeenntttt476434949

I know you are getting ready to send your swing to me but I would not change a thing yet.

Yes but the left wrist has to roll at impact so if he is closed at the top and then his left wrist rolls as it should then he is dead left.

I would focus on pulling the club back with the right forearm. Try to feel like your right elbow is pinned to your ribs the entire way back and the club face will have no choice but to roll coming back.

maybe keep that right elbow tighter. i can see how keeping it out could close the face...idk

I agree with this. I had the same issue last year. Everything was left, super duck hook, pull, hooks, it was bad. I didnt know what was going on. I took a lesson and my instructor said: "You are closing the door, but never opening it." Once I "opened the door" (Opened the clubface), I started hitting them much straighter.

Hey, we all cannot be that bad, somewhere there is a glimmer of hope.

    • Day 39: did top golf for an hour with the family. It was fun but also not really like real golf at all. Also did some mirror work - working on the backswing stuff mostly.
    • Day 4, 1/2/26.  Played 18 today;  didn't get a chance to warm up (had I known the range was closed, I'd have hit balls at home first).  Played okay, 92 with three balls in the water.  It was raining for more than half the round and I didn't quite appreciate before today just how much I benefit from roll on both drives and approach shots.  I did not adapt well to this change until about hole 15, which is something I have to figure out.
    • Day 143 1-2 Arch wrist in downswing. Having a SLIGHT cup in the lead wrist at the top now. Only paused swings with some rehearsals before swinging at ball.  Used foam ball.
    • Day 459 - 2026-01-02 Had two guys on GEARS Hybrid, so I hopped on afterward (I'm going to do this a lot more often now). So… I've signed myself up for another month of backswing work in two ways: A little more extension of the trail elbow (got into the upper 90s) Less pelvis turn (low 50s).
