Be aware of your balance and any body movement during the swing, you don't want your weight shifting on your toes or heels or your

Or towards or away from the ball. If your spine angle changes you have to make all kinds of adjustments to get back to the ball.

Thanks for bumping up a 4+ year old thread to give an answer? Weird.

I partially disown this comment as I now understand that there are many reasons one could hit off the heel... and I hadn't even been playing golf a year yet when I made this comment, so... yea.

I'm also going to bump this necro-thread, but for good reason I believe.

I can generally hit the middle of the club face with my irons, in fact if I miss-hit, it's more towards the toe. However up until last week, my 3w and driver would always...ALWAYS hit off more towards the heel. I tried everything, standing further away from the ball, getting more on plane, making sure my shoulders and stance lined up correctly. Nothing would change it.

Last week I read a tip from Butch Harmon, imagine that you're hitting the inside of the golf ball, the side of the golf ball closest to you. So far in 3 straight range sessions, it fixed everything. Hopefully this tip can help anyone that is having this problem.

Here's the tip from Butch

I have had success with the same thing that ks8829 said. Line the ball up almost on the hosel of the club, at least for a drill at the range. This makes you swing a little more to the inside because you are pulling your hands into your body and not stretching them out throughout the swing. At the range you can practice with a ball at your normal setup position and then a ball in the same position but 2 inches closer to your feet. Setup at the ball farther away from you and swing and hit the ball on the inside and this can be helpful just for muscle memory. Do not worry about ball flight or distance or accuracy even just try to make contact with the center of the club. Hope this helps!

I have been hitting all of my clubs near the heel for as long as I can remember.  It's only been maybe 1/2" off from center, but it has been consistent.  Even when I set up with the ball near the toe, I found a way to reach out and hit the ball nearer to the heel.  I did a lot of reading and saw someone mention that they found the problem to be that they had relaxed their right/trailing arm too much at address and it was slightly bent.  Of course during the swing, the arm will straighten which will add a little length to the swing.  That summed up my problem perfectly.  I made a conscious effort today to keep my right arm straight at address and had immediate results.  Sometimes solutions don't have to be overly complicated.

    • Imma throw a dart in the dark as no one can tell what is happening once every fourth iron shot per your OP. This might sound counterintuitive but if ball position is too far back in the stance folks are known to throw down clubhead steeply. Could be happening. And yes, @billchaois not wrong; clubhead tends to bottom out wherever your pressure is. So slide forward (not sway), then hit.
