I can consistently hit my driver around 265, which I think is pretty good.
But, I cannot hit a 6 iron past 155. Since I hit them well, it's not terrible. But more problems on my score card since I have to hit a four iron at 165.

I can't post a video, but my ball flight doesn't have that penetrating flight you see with tour pros, or better players. The ball just sort of lobs of the face when I hit it. I have realized I've been getting very steep, and that caused a loss of distance, but i want to know how to add a few yards, other than the whole swing faster deal. More accurately, how to get a more penetrating ball flight.

I should be able to put p a video tonight after I get back from the range.

Faulty weight shift sounds like the problem (in that it leads to you hanging back and flipping at the ball a little). A forward press might help, but it might also hurt and could mask the actual problem.

Tell us about your divots. Tell us about how you finish the golf swing (where's your weight, where are your hips pointing, how are your legs arranged, whatever).

Relax your hands, grip less tightly.

Hold the club like you're holding a live bird in your hands. Just enough to keep it from flying away.

it was have you ever held a live bird in your hands .....not tight enough to hurt but just firm enough to keep it from flying away

i have that movie memorized

Are you keeping your head behind the ball at impact. This was/is my issue.

Consistently getting 265 with driver.....I agree...something is going on with your irons that is robbing you.

When I was having trouble with distance (driver-280, 5 iron-160) I realized my weight wasn't getting shifted correctly. I swung at the range for a while with a heavier club so I was forced to sort of swing my hips a bit. (this was under supervision of my coach) and that led me to shift my weight correctly. Now, my 5 iron is back to 175 and I'm liking it. My grip was also way way way too tight. I went through a glove every two weeks because I would wear out the palm. Once I loosened my grip, I got a serious POP at impact that felt amazing, and got a few good yards. That also helped my chronic draw/borderline hook.

It's probably ball striking, a good iron shot will have the divot start right where the ball was sitting or slightly forward. Hardest part of the game, even for the pro's.

Light grip pressure is a definite start in the right direction, tends to a little lag and good downward strike.

Finish the swing, no matter what.

That's all a 6 can offer...good luck in the future.

This is kind of a weird situation, because I feel like I have the opposite problem. Mine is mostly consistency though. I hit my irons very far for being the hacker that I am. I would grab my 8 to play a 160-165 yard shot and my 5 to play a 195 yard shot. I really don't even know how far my driver consistently goes, but it doesn't seem far enough for me to be hitting my irons consistently that long... I just struggle to make consistent square contact with the driver, but make great contact with my irons. Sorry for the off-topic thread, I just saw your post and it made me think of this...

I, too, have the opposite problem. I don't hit anything real far. I go 150 with a 7 iron. But I just about always hit a given iron the same distance. Same with my 3W and 5W. My driver, OTOH, is very inconsistent. It might go 250 total if I really pure it and get a little draw spin on it. Or it might go nice and straight about 180. At least I don't miss many fairways with it but 180 with a driver is pretty anemic. I never know which driver swing is going to show up from one tee to the next. My swing is very consistent and repeatable with irons and fairway woods but not so much with the driver.

Nike forged blades have weak lofts compared to most other irons on the market, probably a factor.

I was having similar problems. Ended up being 2 things with my irons. Weight shift, and hands not ahead of the club.

Just since my lesson 2 days ago, im getting an extra 15 yards on my 9 iron, nailing them about 145-150. I have a lesson monday on driving, and thursday on chipping. Hoping to improve distance and accuracy on both of those.

Faulty weight shift sounds like the problem (in that it leads to you hanging back and flipping at the ball a little). A forward press might help, but it might also hurt and could mask the actual problem.

At my range session, I figured out Im just no releasing the club through the ball well, with my shoulders pointing a little to right of my target at the finish. My hips are getting thru the ball, but since I'm not turning my upper body as well, I'm running into some problems. My weight ends up on my left leg, but I can't be positive it goes all the way back.

I have the opposite problem. I somehow lost about 20-25 yards on my driver and am now only out there about 220 off the tee. But I can hit my 2-hybrid 230 off the deck if need be, and use my 3-iron for 200 yard par 3s. One of the paradoxes of golf -- when one of your clubs gets hot, something else goes south.
