Or is it always your last 20 rounds? My friend said he heard it resets every year, I thought it was an evolving number.

No it doesn't reset. Typically you start each season right where you left off the previous one, with the same scores. The oldest score currently showing in my last 20 on the GHIN website is from last October. Our posting season was closed from November 15 thru March 14.

Reset to what 0, 36, your first handicap? I've never heard of any of those things happening and I'm pretty sure its the same system in England as in America. Its an evolving number that (in my clubs case and I think universally) goes up 0.1 if you hand in a card that's over your handicap or visa versa for a round that's under.

From my knowledge, it continues indefinatley. I was late this year joining a club, but I did a check on GHIN around april to see what my handicap was after playing for a week in flordia over the winter. I couldnt even find my name and thought i lost all of my history. I joined a club around the middle of april and found that all of my scores popped back up when i was in a club again.

It's not an average of the last 10 scores. The formula takes more than that into consideration. You average the lowest 10

differentials from your last 20 submitted scores, then multiply that number by .96 to get your index. Those differentials are also calculated with a formula based on the course rating and slope.

I developed some handicap calculation software for a golf course several years back. When I read the USGA documentation, it is not supposed to reset. Some members were upset because the course was previously resetting the HI every year, but I showed them the USGA's docs and they stuck with what I did.

This posting season is only closed in areas that can't handle winter golf, is that correct? I play a fair amount of golf in California during the off season and I believe those can still be counted towards handicap (since the course is in playable condition).

Here are the dates for the posting of rounds. For instance I'm in Indiana so I can only post rounds played between March 1 and Nov. 26.

Remember that the relevant active schedule is the one at the course you're playing, not the club you belong to (

http://www.usga.org/HandicapFAQ/hand....asp?FAQidx=15 ). So for the OP, yes, if you play somewhere that has a longer active season, you can (and must) count them toward your handicap before the start of your home active season.
