In Tiger's email newsletter, he says (in part):

And no, I won't carry two drivers. I can shape my driver both ways, so I don't need to carry two, although I can understand where Phil Mickelson is coming from. With today's equipment, the ball goes straighter and it's hard to move it from right to left.

"Unlike that loser, I know how to make a golf ball cut or draw..."

Heh heh. Tiger, never missing an opportunity to stick in the needle a little...

Fortunately for Phil, he has one more major than Tiger this year and has a better fairways hit % as well.

I'd use two drivers as well if that was the case.

The quote shows Tiger is a competitor and good at gamesmanship but it doesn't mean he added another green jacket this year. That belongs to Phil. I am in no way saying Phil is better than Tiger just that it sounds like sour grapes or a short memory on Tiger's part.

I don't think it sounds like sour grapes. I think it sounds like he's poking fun at FIGJAM, pure and simple.

This thread pulled me out of lurker mode. Didn't Mickelson at his final speech after winning the 06 Masters pay respect to Tiger and his Dad?

Yeah. So?

It's not like it's a huge cheap a shot. Just a wee little one.

Yeah he can shape the driver both ways alright, right and left rough, right and left hazards.

Each player will decide for themselves which approach and equipment to the game is better for themselves, personally I like Phil's approach because afterall it's not how you shape a shot or how far...it's how many. You can look at Phil's approach as less macho because he can't work a driver or you can look at his approach as brilliant for knowing and accepting his limitations and finding a way to work past them.

I think its great that Tiger teases Phil a little. Golf needs a rivalry to make it more interesting. Maybe we'll see a few more pot shots from these two leading into the US Open (and hopefully paired together at some point).

Let the party begin!

Tiger can shape a driver about as well as Phil. Phil knows this. Hence, Phil makes the intelligent equipment decision and Tiger runs his mouth and watches fill win another major...

How did this rivalry start? Aside from them being a step ahead of the game I have the impression it started with something. . ?

Only one Callaway club in my bag.

Yeah I don't know how the whole Tiger / Phil thing started but I'm sure they each get their jabs in.

I remember Phil saying Tiger played inferior equipment. That was definitely a dig. Tiger can pretty much say anything right now as he's the best, most dominant golfer in the world. I think people give the best in the world the benefit of the doubt like we did to Michael Jordan because, well, he's Mike. The same is true of Tiger and now, that I think about it, it was a pretty light hearted jab at Phil because I can't see Tiger taking himself too seriously there.

Granted, Tiger is the same guy who roasted Stephen Ames on a spit at match play after receiving some jabs about his inability to hit a fairway. Tiger seems to get the job done in critical moments.

BTW, I'm kind of glad Tiger made Ames look silly because that guy has a serious love affair going with himself.

Exactly. Tiger is just returing the favor.

God I'm hoping for a Tiger-Phil final pairing at Winged Foot.

Fairways and Greens.

Hey Flap, want to bet which finishes lower, Tiger or Phil? I'd put the odds pretty even right now, and your man has a six-stroke advantage. I'll wager the $10 I won from Rafi in the Michelle Wie bet.

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
