I am currently using Taylormade RAC tp mb blades, and i am not getting enough yardage with them. What are some good cavity backs or half blade/cavity backs? I am thinking about getting the Mizuno mp-52's, but i am not sure. Also, will getting cavity backs increase my iron distance by about 5 yards? Thanks =) (btw, im 15 and i am 5'6)

I played the Mizuno MP 32's for years before changing to Ping i5's for a year. Now I am playing the MP 52's with the Pings now reserved as my backup set. I just love Mizuno irons what can I say. I am not sure changing irons to get 5 extra yards is worth it to me, but that is just MHO. I am longer with my irons now at age 56 than I was at 36 because I have a better swing.

80% of the club's performance is that shaft. If you like your irons, I'd consider new shafts first. If you just want new clubs, then get whatever you want, but I've yet to find that magic extra 5 yards in a stick (see my sig). You're 15... give it 2 years and an extra 10-20 is bound to show up! It was many years ago but IIRC, I gained 2 full club lengths between my soph and Sr. year of HS. Patience Grasshopper!

Yes you are. Just hit them straight.

Those clubs probably have dynamic gold shafts, so the shaft changing makes a lot of sense. What shafts are in them right now?

Also check your lofts, they may be weaker than others. Also, being their blades you've got to strike the ball really solid to get the distance out of them.

Exactly. I had TM R7 Draw irons before I switched to the Mizuno MP-57. I lost 10 yrd per iron. It wasn't until I realized that the loft was different and that was the reason for the difference in distance.

Loft isn't everything... musclebacks tend to have a higher center of gravity and hit the ball lower than similarly lofted cavity-backs (which put the weight low in the clubhead).

Also, shaft flex (and clubhead weight), etc. matter too.

How far are you currently hitting your irons?
You could try the Taylormade r7 tp's and you might gsin some distance.

Um, i hit the 7 iron about 145, and the shafts that are currently in them are dynamic gold regulars, but they are cut down an inch, so i think that makes them a bit stiffer.

When i was 15 i played my 7 to something like 140 as well. when i turned 16 it was up to something like 160, now at 17 i am at 170..

Its not your clubs. perhaps your not striking it well enough to be playing blades, perhaps you dont create enough lag, there could be any number of things. You could go out and get a stronglofted set like the Cobra S9, but you will still be hitting a 7 140 yards, it will just say 8 on the bottom :) Give it time. The MB are great blades, i would love to have them, you just need to grow a little bit and figure out your swing.. figuring out gear that fits your swing will come later. edit- how far are you hitting your driver and woods?

New irons won't make the ball travel farther.

If you have clubs that fit you properly, then it's your swing that inhibits you from hitting the ball farther. That becomes an entirely different conversation...

Yeah. New clubs won't do jack for you, just accept the fact that that's how far you hit the ball... I play with a guy who hits the same distances you do and he is almost scratch. So that's your new goal, not to hit the ball further

Also, why are you playing forged musclebacks if you care about distance so much? Those irons aren't meant for distance they're made for the highest possible ammount of control.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
