Lessons from a Pro that...

Would you guys take lessons from a Pro that:

A. You can beat.
B. Has an iffy looking swing himself, not that smooth, etc.

I am probably going to end up getting a lesson with a guy that posses at least one of these qualities. He can probably beat me, but I've seen his swing and mine and mine appears to be a lot smoother and in better positions, but he's still a pro so I'm going to take lessons.

Would that bother you guys if his swing wasn't very good (for a lesson-giving pro standard) and what he shot on the course?

just bercause he cant do it dont mean he cant get you to do it and besides who you think has a better swing and positions?tiger or hank?phil or butch? just because you acan beat them or your swing looks better doesent mean anything

There is a huge difference between a PGA tour player beating his swing coach and an 11 handicapper looking for an instructor.

If a local pro doesn't have a very good swing, and can barely beat an 11 handicapper, I would find another pro. Most are quite a bit better than that.

as long as he's not trying to get you to swing like him, i wouldn't worry that much. gotta remember the quote.

If the "pro" is a PGA pro then he had to play a player apptitude test. IIRC you have to be something like a 2.x index to pass that test. Can't find the link at the moment though.

Just because you don't have the right swing, doesn't mean you don't know what it looks like. Knowing something and doing it are two different things. I'd go with the guy who has the iffy looking swing. Why take lessons from someone who you can beat? Thats like me giving Shaq advice on free-throws. Which, A. I'm horrible at free throws, and B. He's never going to get any better anyways. Good luck! ~RHPM

ive looked into it before you have to be able to play to at least a 10

I think they try to shoot about 156-158 over two rounds. Within 15 of the course rating (x2).

And you only have to pass it once. Not every good teacher can necessarily play. My wife could have probably beat Harvey Penick towards the end of his life, but he was still one of the top teachers around. Admittedly, his issues were more age-related, but it still holds true. A lot of the best teachers never get time to work on their own games.

Yeah, I guess you guys are right. The guy can probably beat me, it's just I've seen him play and hit on the range and I wasn't too impressed with his ballstriking, so it makes you "iffy" about whether to take instruction from him.

I guess I was spoiled with how good my last teacher was. He set the course record with a 63 at a pretty tough country club near me. And he could play righty (low 80's), and lefty (usually in the low 70's).

You'll have to trust that the instruction will work. If you can't "let go" of your perception of his game/swing and remember, that you're working on your game/swing, then save your money or find another pro. Good luck

Butch Harmon's swing is nothing to drool over, but I'd definitely pay to have him look at my swing

A lot of the best teachers never get time to work on their own games.

Very good point... I know my instructor is an awesome golfer, he plays one round a week and it's usually with a student...

      78 today at Minnesott (36 front / 42 back) - a new first with an even par on the front.  A big day of up and downs for par.  Only 26 putts against 4 GIR and 5 nGIR.  Was a CPO (cart path only) day due to recent rains.  Overall game was on - until 18 where I was looking at having a first “no-sixes” and made a triple 7 (tee shot in the lake, 2nd tee in fairway, shot 4 approach to right of green pin high, shot 5 bogie on the green, long two putts for triple 7.  Still a solid round and new personal best.

      I believe that 76 bpms is the tour average (or somewhere around that). I think that's from taking it back to impact. I'm not 100% sure of exactly how it works since a typical pendulum is already moving when it starts going back. The putter on the throughswing ideally would work pretty much exactly like a pendulum though. To get the exact same time period from starting the putter back to impact, you'll have to accelerate it a lot faster on a longer putt right at the beginning until it gets to the speed it needs to be to make the putter move the right distance. Probably all way too much to think about while actually hitting a putt, but bottom line is I agree entirely that a metronome is a good thing to use if you're working on your putting tempo. As to the split between backstroke and downstroke, the tour tempo lot said 2:1 is the ideal. 3:1 for full swing. 2:1 for short game and putting. Whenever I go on a SAM I am about 1.7:1 I think and I can't for the life of me get my backstroke to be slow enough to get it to 2:1. Ho hum. Last comment - if you do have a perfect pendulum putting stroke and you have the ball slightly forward of the center of your stance, then the putter should be just starting to rise again at impact and with the way that pendulum motion works, it should be very slightly decelerating at impact, which I believe someone may have suggested once 😛

      I'm a big fan of the metronome. I forget what my actual numbers were, but something like 0.59 seconds: my backswings, regardless of the length of the putt, is 0.59 seconds (or 0.72 or whatever the actual number was). The period of a pendulum is determined by the length of the pendulum. So, to hit a putt harder, you take it back farther… in the same amount of time. So you have to swing it faster, and thus, it comes through faster. The putter head has to travel faster to travel farther in the same amount of time. Everyone tends to have a "beat" that they like. For some it's slower, and they have to make bigger backswings to make a putt go the same distance as someone like Brandt Snedeker. It also has a metronome IIRC. 😄
