taking out a couple wedges

I carry a 52*, 54*, 56* and a 60* wedges. I want to take to replace them with a couple hybrids. I'm thinking of removing them and just using my PW to cover for them. What would some of you take out.

The 56* if you want to take out 2 then take out the 56* and either the 52* or 54*. There should only be roughly 6 yards difference between you 52 to your 54 and from your 54 to your 56.

I would keep my wedges and considering taking a long iron out of the bag and learn to hit the hybrid and take some distance off the club by choking up.

Assuming you have irons with a 46* or 47* PW, I'd go 53* and 58*...

I don't carry a 3,4 or 5 iron. I start with a 6 iron. I carry a 3,5 and 7 metal. The 52 and 60* are the ones I really struggle with. However, I do hit the 60 very well out of green side bunkers which is the only reason I carry it.

Having 3 wedges within a total range of 4 degrees is overkill. You shouldn't need them to be any closer than 4 degrees from one club to the next. I carry a 52°, 56° and 58°, but the 56° is used only from greenside bunkers so I don't count that as a general wedge. My PW is 45°, so my spreads are 7° and 6°.

Your setup is overkill. You have one or two too many wedges. You need to ditch one or two of them. Do not think of this as a sacrifice. I do not think that you will be giving up anything.

You have two options: 1) take out your 54° and have P, 52°, 56°, and 60° for four total wedges including your P, or 2) take our your 52°, 56°, and 60° and buy a 58° for P, 54°, and 58° for three total wedges including your P.

So you are recommending FIVE WEDGES! For goodness sake the guy is carring FIVE wedges! You can't be serious.

I think going 47, 54, 60 is a good setup. It gives you all the versatility you need and it keeps things a little more simple. I am actually getting tired of my four wedge setup and I would probably switch and add a 3 iron if I had cash to burn. I used to love the four wedges for the options, but it doesn't seem necessary anymore.

So my advice: Take out the 52 and 56 and add some longer clubs. You might find that you don't miss the extra wedges.

The pitching wedge, as it is usually a part of a 'set' of irons, is rarely a true wedge, it's more like a 10 iron. So I don't believe we can accurately say he has 5 wedges. Take out the the 54 and leave yourself with the 52, 56 and 60...this is a more common set up and will take care of clearing some space.

hey thanks for all your help everyone. I'm going to go with the 54 and 60*. Since I hit the 60 very well out of green side bunkers I need to keep it in the bag. I hit the 54 better then the 52. I do not no the reason, but I just do. As for what I'm going to add, it will be a 4 & 5 hybrid. We'll see how it works.

Sounds like a good idea. A 52/58 or 54/60 setup works very well. I've got 52/56 currently, but will probably go with 52/58 next time.

The only reason I play a 4 wedge setup is because I want full shots down to 100 yards. My pw drop zone is around 135y so I'd rather not go for 115 or 110 with a feel shot. That's why I've got a 52*. Your wedge setup at the moment is a bit redundant, especially to have a 52, 54, 56. Take a look at how your iron lofts are spaced, probably by 4* correct? Now, I'd say you should keep the 60 for those greenside bunkers, very useful, and that low bounce will make it a very versatile club. Now, you gotta figure out what kind of short game shots and trajectories you prefer. I don't really like too much roll out and I like a higher softer landing shot so I use a 56* with high bounce. That takes from the fairway well for chipping and from rough well for pitching. I think you can get rid of 2 wedges and keep a pw, 60 lw, and something in the middle, suggestively a high bounce wedge. If you want a lower shot, go with the 54 or 52. Trajectory is all your preference. I only use 56 and 60 for short game, others are pretty much dedicated irons, so if you play like I do, take the 52 and 56 and drop the 54. If not, maybe best to keep the 54 and drop the 52 and 56.

Which is your sand wedge (should have more bounce than the others)?

I'm guessing the 56. Which means that's a keeper. What loft is your PW? 45, 46, 47, 48? With 4 degrees between your wedges, I'm guessing it is 48. In which case I would drop the 54 & 60, and bend the 52 and 56 (or bend the 60) so you end up with: 48 (pw), 53 (52 bent), 58 (56 or 60 bent). or don't bend the sand wedge (cause it's perfect and you love it at 56) and end up with: 48, 52, 56
