Guys, be wary of what the PGA Tour media guide says. Whatever it says for Tiger Woods is wrong. Tiger's like 5'11".

Hmm, that's interesting.

Don't see why height should make that much of a difference. The taller you are the longer the clubs I guess, but it won't be any handicap in terms of distance for those lower players. Anthony Kim is 5'11", even choke down on the clubs, but still 21st in driving distance.

Shorter than average people can need longer clubs and taller than average people can actually need shorter clubs(pretty rare though). All depends on arm length to the ground.

This makes me feel much better. When I was starting, some of my (ill-informed) friends told me that, being 5'8, I wouldn't end up being a great golfer. That's part of why I enjoy watching AK, Imada, Pavin, and other guys that are (listed as being) in the neighborhood of 5'8.

Yea Anthony Kim does not look like he is 5'-10" at all...

If you look on Playing Lessons he is about the same height at Stephanie Sparks and she looks to be about 5'-7" or 5'-8". I was able to go to the BMW Championship in September and noticed that Vijay, Ernie & Stewart Cink were all everybit of their listed heights and possibly taller. Particularly Ernie Els who looked like a giant out in the fairway.

They're not really very big.

Really? I thought Tiger was taller. I'm 6'2'' and have nearly brushed shoulders with Tiger as he walked by and he's not 3" shorter than me.

You're right though, they look much bigger on TV. Kenny Perry looks like a big guy with a large gut on TV but is actually pretty slim in person. Carl Petterson is another one that looks large on TV but isn't.

Tiger has good posture (98% of people don't, to make up a number). If I had to pick a number, he's 5'11". Maybe 6'0" with metal spikes on concrete and to the top of his hat.

Yes, Perry does look a lot bigger on TV, but I thought Petterson looked pretty much like he did on TV. I followed his group for about nine holes at The Barclay's (Ridgewood CC) for about nine holes and he was looking pretty darn hefty...at least compared to his playing parnters Allenby and Sergio.

Maybe he's slimmed down then? I watched him at the Masters this year and everyone I was with was like "wow, he's pretty slim!" I hadn't seen him on TV for a while before that but I know he used to look bigger.

That assumes that you are actually 6'2"...

I have to agree with Iacus but it begs the question why do they inflate height? Also it seems they put up accurate weights so it seems silly that they will list tiger at 6 1' but they post his weight at 158 pounds. I'm super scrawny at 5-9 and that same weight.

It reminds me of a stupid prank show I saw a couple years ago where a guy was trying to piss off a nfl quarterback I can't remember who the guy was but he was drilling the guy about his listed height of 6 1' saying that he was only 6 foot and he was clearly a couple inches taller than the quarterback.

You could see that the qb was obviously squimmish about addressing the issue and noticeably upset. Oh and there are a number of these types of post on the internet where people that are actually 6 foot ask why tiger appeared shorted then they were given his listed height.

add on, I just decided out of curiousity to check the only famous pro athlete I have stood next too in person against his listed height. I checked Seneca Wallace because he was my colleges quarterback and I have stood directly next to him and he is my height or shorter and he of course is listed at 5 11'.

Why do they do this?

hell, fred couples is only about 5'10'' and he hits the ball a mile. he's always in the top on driver distance.

Good point.

You were born 6'2"!

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

If I remember correctly, a few years back GD, built the "ideal golfer" The height they came up with was 5'11''. The "ideal golfer" ended up basically being a morph of Tiger and Norman.

    • I've played the Tour in both white and yellow.  They play well and seem to hold up pretty good even when running into trees or cart paths.  Right now, I've been trying them against the Bridgestone Tour B RX ball and I really like both.  The Snell 3.0 looks to be a great update to the issues Snell was running into with the previous generation.

    • Not to take away from the OP's question but the Snell 3.0 is about all you could ask for in a ball. I'm not a paid spokesman and my opinion does not reflect on the owner of the site. Lexi Thompson could beat most people with a Top Flite, or a Nitro. Ben Griffin? He doesn't offer a lot of street cred so I'll pass. Now if Fat Perez or Heavy Ballesteros start using it then?????? 😀
    • Just read that Peter Oosterhuis passed away. He was the one and only celebrity I have asked for an autograph! In September 2007, I was in the Charlotte Airport awaiting a flight reading my October 2007 Golf Magazine. It was during the FedEx playoffs and Tiger had just won the previous tournament with the Tour Championship the next event. I watched the event listening to the dulcet tones of Peter Oosterhuis, among others. I opened the magazine, and started reading an article about Oosterhuis and the opening picture had him posing as James Bond in a movie’s opening sequence. I looked up from the article and he was sitting directly across from me!    I approached and showed him the article and asked if he would sign the photo. Mr. Oosterhuis asked “Are you keen on golf?” When I responded positively, we spoke for about 10 minutes discussing the fact that both Phil and Tiger had won FedEx events prior to the Tour Championship. He was very gracious and a wonderful storyteller. I was saddened by his battles with dementia and missed him on CBS’s telecasts.
