To begin with I am not a great golfer, but I am not the worst golfer ever. I usually play nine holes most of the time when I go out and shoot around a 45-48. Well I have been golfing for about three summers now and I had been using a cheap set of john daly clubs from k-mart.

For my birthday my wife bought me a new set of irons, the adams golf tight lies. I was thinking well adams golf is better than dunlop golf clubs but I don't know if I like them at all. All of the irons have a higher loft than my previous irons. I lost about 15 yards of distance on my 9 iron and I couldn't figure out what to hit anywhere on the course since every hit seems like it goes a mile high.

So now I am stuck, I want to use my old irons but I don't want to piss the wife off. Should I stick it out with the adams clubs or risk the wife finding out that I am not using her gift to me?

Yardage changes would most likely happen with any new set of clubs. And you don't want the better half mad at you, trust me.

Yup had same issue, my Callaways were hitting roughly 10-15 yds shorter than my previous set. You'll get used to it after a few buckets at the range.
Then you'll know what club to hit without worry.

why not get them fitted? and change the loft and lie accordingly?

Don't really have the money to do that, barely have enough money to go golfing.

im only 16, and not married, but i cant imagine having your wife pissed at you would be a good thing. my suggestion is to stick with the adams irons and try to get to a driving range. spend some time figuring out your yardages by hitting a few balls with each club. the yardages are going to be different than what you're used to, but al least you'll know what club to hit when you're on the course.

Tell the missus the Adams irons mean a lot to you and you only want to use them for special games...When you're just hacking with your buddies, tell her you'd rather just use the old dunlops!

Seriously though, as one of the other guys suggested, just practice with them and get used to them. There's no rule in golf that says that from any given distance you need to hit a particular club.

Instead of hitting a dunlop club with a number 9 on it, just hit the adams one that goes the same distance - probably an 8? The end result will be the same?

This is 100% spot on. I used to have a problem in highschool. When someone else hit a 6 iron, my pride wouldn't let me play a 5 iron, even if I needed it. Now, I realize, I have a club for every distance from 80-240 and there is absolutely nothing someone else could say that would make me hit a different club than is needed for that distance. The number on the bottom doesn't matter. So, your Adams 9 iron is just like your dunlop 8 iron. So what? You still have a 42 degree lofted club that flies a certain distance. Why does the number on the bottom matter? Then again, it's totally legit to not like a set of irons, so don't let anyone discourage you from choosing what you like, but to be honest, if it's just hitting a certain club too short and high, it shouldn't be an issue.

You can do one or the other:

1) carry both set in your trunk and play the set you want and your wife and not know the difference.

Beside if you wife wants the best for you, you should be able to level with her and simple tell her the truth about what you are going through with the new set she bought you. The truth shall set you free.

Remember its not what you say but how you say it that matter to wives.

2) first thank her for being so thoughtfull in buying you a set of club as a present, tell her how lucky you are that you are married to such a wife. tell her how much you love her but say honey, I have to be honest with you.......... and tell her the truth and ask her what you should do and she might suggest going back to the store and find something that suit you better.

I am going golfing tonight, so I will give the adams another go and just have to club up from what I am used to using at certain distances.

Honesty is always the best policy. I don't know your wife, but there is always a tactful way to break it. If she finds out later that you don't like them, she will be doubly upset.

On another note, I agree that you should spend some range time with them before you decide to return them. I switched to Adams clubs two years ago, and it took me a few weeks to adjust. At first it seemed like I was hitting them shorter, but it came around when my confidence level went up.

Are you sure your handicap is right? If you're shooting 45 for 9 holes, that 90 for 18 which is about bogey golf. You should be lower than 33 definitely.

I think the consensus is that just being honest is the best way to go about it. Heck, she might not even care. She might just get mad at the person at the store that advised her to buy that set of sticks.

If you otherwise like the clubs and just not the distance, and wanted to get the loft/lie adjusted to match your old set, you might want to see where she did buy them. A lot of places will either do work on them for free included with the set of clubs or will adjust the loft/lie at a reduced cost. I think Dick's does it for a couple bucks per club.

I feel your pain though, my girlfriend just bought me half of my first Scotty Cameron. I do love the putter, but she got it because she liked the look of it, the red headcover and grip etc. When I told her I changed the grip because I didn't like the feel of it, you'd have thought I told her I was breaking up with her. She looked crushed.

I haven't messed with the handicap thing since I first joined the forum awhile ago. I will edit it later.

I think the loft I can get used too, I will just have to spend a few nights at the range and figure things out. Thanks for everyones input.

For the most part, a high trajectory should be your friend. Having a low trajectory flight obviously helps with distance, but unless you can spin the ball on an approach shot, you have less control over where the ball is going. Since you say you're about a bogey golfer, you would most likely benefit more from a higher ball flight where the ball lands and stops after a short roll than a low driving trajectory. Just my opinion...

Are you sure the lofts are higher? How do you know? Can you give us the exact model, I'd like to look at the specs. It's possible that your old clubs could have been lower lofts than normal and your Adams club are actually normal lofts.

That would make sense if they are John Daly clubs - I can see and hear the marketing spin now - "these are the longest clubs ever!!" Yeah, because the lofts have all been adjusted down. LOL

Just an idea.

EDIT:

Here's the specs for the tight lies set listed on the Adams Golf website. I don't man, looks like these are not high lofted at all, a 45* PW is pretty strong, most are around 47-48 I think.

Wow, that's a strong PW. My old iron 9 iron was 44.5*...

Losing 15 yards on a short iron is pretty drastic. Methinks there is something else in play here.

    • I was wondering the same thing, but haven't heard anything about an explanation.  Seems it almost had to be...
    • Ive missed some Rory wins in the last couple years including the Players (again) last month. this one feels so good. Congrats Rory on being only the 6th golfer ever to win the Grand Slam.
    • Appreciate your responses—seriously. Agreed - Rory's overall play from 2015–2024 has been elite. Twenty wins, constant top-10s, and staying in the top tier of strokes gained stats year after year is no joke. That only makes the major drought more puzzling, not less. And yes, he’s come close—Carnoustie, St. Andrews, LACC—but that almost makes the argument more interesting. When you’ve got a guy that good, who keeps putting himself in position, why hasn’t he sealed the deal in the biggest moments? I do think his transformation post-2014—adding noticeable muscle, changing his physical profile—might’ve altered his swing tempo, feel, or ability to stay loose under extreme pressure. Not during Thursday or even Saturday—but on the back nine on Sunday, when the mental and physical margins get razor thin, especially at Augusta. Is this stat meaningful?  From 2016–2024, Rory lost strokes to the field on Sundays in nearly half of his major appearances, despite being dominant Thursday through Saturday. That pattern suggests it’s not just bad luck or getting beat—it’s a recurring issue with closing, under pressure. It’s tough to measure pressure in a spreadsheet. And Augusta especially punishes any uptick in tension or loss of touch. I’m not saying “getting jacked” is the sole reason for the drought—but looking for subtle shifts that could explain why a generational talent keeps coming up just short in majors, I think it’s worth considering. And OF COURSE - he finally got to the mountaintop, in extreme, dramatic fashion.  Maybe, as others have said, this will equate to cracking the code and going on a major run for the next 5-10 yrs?
