This is a very serious offense we are talking about and matched in severity only by tearing off one of those "do not remove under penalty of law" mattress tags.

hah,agreed.

what would really suck is if someone from the club saw which house you were coming in and out of... and they hassle the homeowner... being your girlfriend or her parents... and you dont even live there... lol... sucks for them

I grew up two blocks from a private club - I used to sneak out at dusk to practice my chipping and putting on one of the holes (I was 12-13 years old) - no one ever said anything and the pro was cool about me coming up and using their putting green even though I wasn't a member. We used the same course as our home course when I was in high school, so maybe that had something to do with it.

As long as you respect the course and leave it in better shape than you found it, I wouldn't see a problem with it.

I agree with this.

Might I also add that I believe age makes a HUGE difference. If you're 40 years old (sorry to the older members ) sneaking onto a club is kind of classless. If you're a young teen, I think it's not a big deal - I wouldn't say "Hey, go sneak onto a private club" and suggest it, but I don't think it's something that everyone needs to get worked up about. Why do I say this? Well, it looks bad if your an adult sneaking onto a golf course, lets be honest. It's a little more expected as a young kid because kids do those kinds of things, and also don't have the money to join a club, and a lot of kids don't have much money to even pay for very many rounds. As long as you're not doing anything stupid out there, and you're following good ettiquette, and you're there at a time when the course is not busy at all, I don't see a big deal. Once again, I wouldn't suggest kids my age do this, but if it happened once in a while at the 'right' time to sneak on, I don't think it's a big deal at all.

Yeah why don't we all free-ride, then there'll be no golf courses to trespass on.

Kids can't afford to join a country club anyway - so sneaking on once in a while around dusk to play some holes, while no one is there, it's truly driving golf into the ground worldwide!

Yup, you're right.

Put me in the "he is right" camp.

Most of the private clubs around here have rather affordable junior memberships. If you can't join those, you can join the many public courses as a junior member pretty inexpensively. You're trespassing, and that's not cool. Justify it all you'd like, but you're still doing something illegal.

The other day I was on a golf course and hit two houses on two different holes. I feel these people have the right to come on and play a hole if the golf course allows someone as bad as me to use their course. So go for it.

Ok, I see your point - but it's not hurting the game of golf worldwide because some kids (if they are respecting the golf course) go onto a country club at dusk on occassion. I'm not saying go play everyday there, but once a month for a few holes here and there is not going to bother anyone, and I don't see it as that big of a deal.

Well, look: if you consider breaking the law "respecting the golf course," then we're going to have to agree to disagree.

I realized its not worth it to run out there to play one hole, even though its a nice one. I would just worry to much about being caught.

The temptation is I will be living there shortly and it will always be calling me on those lazy summer nights.

Its just such a damn shame that is a private course, otherwise I would probably pay to play 9 there every night I got a chance.

i don't have much sympathy for expensive clubs, private or otherwise. golf suffers from a reputation for being exclusionary, and $100 green fees and $5000 memberships don't help with that reputation. if you sneak onto reasonably priced munis, i think that makes you a bit of a jerk. if you are playing a few holes at shinnecock (or whatevs) all the power to you. they can afford it.

So it's ok to steal from the rich, just not the poor, huh? Sadly, there are many who agree with you.
