I regrip the occasional club, but for a specialty club like a putter where the grip has to be perfectly straight...

This is exactly why I regrip my putter and clubs myself. I have OCD on them being a certain way and I like to make sure all of the old tape is removed first. Last time I took them somewhere to be re-gripped they left all the old tape on and the grips felt fat. Lazy people.

For a specialty club like the putter where the grip needs to be perfect, personally I'd think twice about ever going to Dick's in the first place since it has to be perfectly straight. Speaking of Cameron grips, can you not order the red cord studio select grips on their site? I don't see them.

Well, it's not like the grip sets right away. I tweaked it after he gave it back to me anyway (he had it on strong).

And like I said, live and learn. Now I know they can't even do the simple things there. It's simply re-affirmed my belief in doing it myself OR using my friend Bert to do it all.

If you call you can probably order them. Or get them from Table Rock.

I've had worse experiences at Dick's ordering golf equipment. Ordered clubs online and they send them to the wrong address and I still had to pay for shipping when I cancelled the order.

The moron should have apologised and said no charge. Also, he could have offereed to order the right grip. Hard to believe they own Golf Galaxy.

I have had very good experiences at my local Dick's. The pro there is somewhat capable, and their selection is impressive. There is no comparison to a store that specializes in only golf, however, I am really surprised to hear about all of these complaints. I would never rely on someone who worked there to make a decision for me, but I think that goes to say for any employee who you do not have a personal relationship with. Perhaps my local Dick's is the exception rather than the norm?

I was in the PGA Tour Superstore the other day and passing by the repair dept. and I saw the red putter grips. $22 !! Wow.

Yea I'll never go to dicks again for any kind of service. I once tried to have them replace my driver's shaft after the old one broke just above the hosel. I worked with an employee to find a new shaft, picked a grip... everything all set pick it up in 2-3 days. Then i get a call saying they don't have the equipment to bore out the old shaft, so they can't replace it. So I ended up driving back to pick up my driver head. No apology, no nothing. That's an hour of my life I will never get back. Edwin Watts have no problem with it.

I'll go there to buy goods though.

I just learned today that Dick's owns Golf Galaxy, atleast thats what the guy at Dick's said. But yea, Dick's selection on anything golf is limited for the most part.

FWIW, my putter's been regripped, I have four more of those red cord grips standing by, and I'd forgotten how great a new red cord grip feels... dreamy. Pity they wear out so quickly.

Apologize in advance for bumping an older thread, but just had to mention that today I stopped by my local Dicks to buy some batting gloves (for my atrocious slo pitch softball team) and saw the supposed 'golf pro' (ie dude behind golf counter and bays...dunno if he is PGA member or not) slamming drivers into the display racks with a mad look on his face. I guess he was having a bad day, but yikes, talk about lousy professionalism and a good way to scratch up some new hardware. Heck they have punching bags not 10 yards away, he coulda messed with that!

I guess that place is indeed not for golf stuff as everyone on the forum says.

Have you ever thought of sanding them down? I do that to my Golf Pride MultiCoumpund and they are as good as new, never even have to buy new ones until i replace the clubs. They feel as good as new and it is a lot cheaper than a bunch of new $10 grips. I havent tried doing this to my Scotty Cameron Red Cord grips but they do wear out fast and i dont want to lighten my wallet for a new one. Does anyone else do this?

Might be a good thing to try. I'd worry about them getting a bit too small that way, though.

A few millimetres makes all the difference, but ud have to do a lot of rubbin' to notice a difference.

Yeah, their PGA pro and the head of their golf department.

Lol, sorry to hear about your bad luck.

Unfourtunately, the only thing that makes some people "pros" is the fact someone is dumb enough to pay them. The PGA "pro" at the Dicks here isn't very good at working on clubs. He regripped a wedge for me and let the tape fold up in the back, so it had a weird line on the underside. I wanted to change the swingweight of my driver and he pulled out the lead tape... lol

The other pro at my local Dick's is very, very good. He has beenn a clubmaker most of his life...grew up doing it. I'm not quite sure why he is working at Dick's, but he is really good. I trust him to do it all.

I hope the OP posted this to point out the ridiculousness of being charged when the employee at dick's made a mistake and told him they had something that they didn't realize until it was too late.

On the other notion that you can't putt with a black grip and your golf game is going to be thrown out of whack b/c your putter grip is now a different color...i roll my eyes in a planetary sized circle. nothing about the color of a grip affects the mechanics of your putting stroke. I'm guessing before you had a red grip you probably had a black grip and if it was good then, then i'm sure you can adjust now. it seems like teh grip that was installed was teh grip you liked the feel of just a different color. i get the fact that your eye is trained to the red grip...but go to a putting green before your next round and in about 5 strokes you'll forget that the new one is black. and if the black grip does affect your mechanics then get some lessons and go to a sports psychologist cause you've got much bigger problems than your grip color

and if you are such a cameron junkie, why would you even bother getting some generic grip on your putter, its easy as pie to get a proline style grip...that way you can overpay for that crown emblem just like you overpaid for your putter

Because the one I chose is basically the same grip used - basically the Baby T - and Golf Pride grips aren't "generic."

I hope the OP posted this to point out the ridiculousness of being charged when the employee at dick's made a mistake and told him they had something that they didn't realize until it was too late.

I was charged. I didn't really care - it's a few bucks. I just won't go to Dick's anymore. The guy I mentioned, the one who normally grips my clubs for me, WORKED there at the time (he's since left), so I went in thinking I'd just have him do it.

On the other notion that you can't putt with a black grip and your golf game is going to be thrown out of whack b/c your putter grip is now a different color...i roll my eyes in a planetary sized circle. nothing about the color of a grip affects the mechanics of your putting stroke.

No kidding. But superstition and/or actual psychology plays a role. A black grip looks ugly. Had I thought about it in the store, I'd have just left without a grip and saved myself the $9.

I started the thread, so now that it's gone through a loop and back again, I'm ending it too.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
