What does everybody do to keep in shape?

I started walking a mile then a slow run for about a mile for about an hour then during the day I will lift light dumb bells 10 lbs and 15 lbs and do curls and other light lifts to tone the muscles along with push ups and some pilates to tone the stomach and stretch.

I have done this for the last few days and plan to keep it up to reduce my belly fat, have more stamina on the last few holes during a round and for overall better health.

Some of the benefits of working out is I am watching what I eat and limiting the portions.

What are you doing to work out?
has it improve your golf game?
What other benefits have you experienced?

Interval training, running hills, backcountry snowboarding (this kicks my butt), weights, powerlifting and yoga. I started working out when I was 15, and have had a gym membership ever since.

I really don't find golf to be tiring at all.

Well golfing keeps me in decent shape. For one, i always walk. I dont know if that is an option for you, but i recommend it as much as possible. As far as workouts, i do that once or twice a week during the golfing season, three to four times during the winter.

I do basic flexibillity and some strenth excerises like sqauts, bench and shoulder presses, upper and lower back, and abs. Nothing is really golf specific. I dont do too much weight so that I get bulky, just enough to give my muscles a workout. I would recommend working at no more than 70% of the weight your capable of pushing. I'll also do explosion excerises like high jumps and lunge and twists with a 20lb medicene ball. Ill spend a little over an hour in the gym for each session. And of course, see your physican before beginning any workout regimen

Thanks for your input.

I walk some stairs yesterday and counted 163, I had to stop 3 times but made it to the top and did not feel out of breath, so the working out is paying off. I like the results so far, my stomach area is toning up.

I actually lost about 40-45 pounds on a some what south beach diet (it is really just a heart healthy diet) and excercise. I like spinning classes and jogging. Did some lifting. Pretty heavy weight. Lots of legs. Was not super dedicated to it. Did it help my golf? I sure hope not because my GHIN number went up 3 points this year. It didn't hurt either. I haven't been able to practice alot, bad swing, less forgiving irons, and home issues.

Now that it is summer I have slacked off a bit. I just monitor my weight, eat well usually, and I walk while playing.

This winter I am going to get really dedicated to working out. The thing I am going to focus on is my forearms and flexability. I want 20 more yards and a club more with my irons. I believe it is neccessary to really be able to compete.

I do feel more in shape walking. I always walked but now 18 is nothing to me. I feel fresh on 18 and I did not last year.

I was on their 5x5 program for a while, It was great, I felt amazing and I gained some serious distance.
I've been off it for the last 2 months and the results are still there.
It's another forum, so you can work out a diet for whatever your needs are that still fit with the workout plan. Great site, good people.

I've got residual fitness.

When I was at boarding school I was incredibly fit. We'd play sports for an hour six days a week, plus my own working out schedule which is usually obsessive but generally short lived programs I'd religiously follow!

My favourite, and one I became pretty notorious for was my press up routine. At the age of 14 I started off doing 50 a night, then 75, and within a couple of months I was up to doing 300 a day. I then started timing myself to get competitive! I'd do 75 pressups take a 15 second break and do another 75 until my 300 were done. At my best I was able to do 300 including breaks in about 6 mins. If I missed a day then I'd do 600 the next day. I remember going on a bandtrip with the school we had to share rooms and my roomie was ill so didn't bother to go out in the evening so went to bed early. After going out I came back and did my 300 pressups in the dark. A year or so later we were talking about working out and the roomie found out I did the pressups obsessively. He said he was disturbed because he woke up when I came back from the night out and thought the groaning was me ahem , pleasuring myself!

I also used to run a fair amount, 7 miles every other day, again I'd time myself. I think the fitness aspect was counteracted by the fact I'd always have a chilled pint of Newcastle Brown Ale in the fridge ready for me when I got home

I need to get back into doing some working out. My wife has gym equipment in the house but I think I'd rather try out a team sport, maybe some soccer or field hockey...

I run 1 mile, ride for 5, ab machines for 15 minutes, lotta tricep and quad lefts as well. Dont need big guns to hit the ball far. and i have a personell trainer at my gym that i go to monday wednesday and friday.

I almost always walk and carry my clubs on my back. I ski too. I guess I do a bit of bike riding too.

None of these really really gets me in great shape, but they definitely help, and I just can't make myself go to the gym when I could be skiing, golfing, disc golfing, or doing something fun ;)

I think if I were to take the time to do anything it would be yoga. Secondly, full body-in-motion exercises like squats, dips, pullups, and push-ups. I just feel like these improve flexibility, strength, and muscular balance at the same time.

Actually... I forget the name and I can't find it right now but there is a lady who has a stretching routine on PBS that is more influenced by ballet than yoga and it looks a bit better than yoga at least to me.

Been playing just a few months but I play almost every day.

What's in my bag: Distance Master Driver, Maltby Trouble Out woods/hybrids, Maltby KE4 Irons (all assembled by me so I can never blame my equipment).

Right now, standing for 9 hours at work, and then golf. Its not helping, but keeping me level. I'm going to start some MMA training with a friend within a few months, so hopefully this winter I can get back to my athletics form. I'm about 255 right now and would like to see 215 or so by the end of winter.

I'm so looking forward to my gym opening back up. Had to take time off for hernia surgery then moved away. They're building a new location about 2 mins from where I live.

I've been playing hockey this spring + started mountain biking again but I'm looking forward to the lift big weights fun again.

Then comes the diet change as lifting heavy weights == start loading on protein :) Get crazy looks from the people at work as I pound back protein drinks and just munch on meat all day :)

I actually just came back form the gym. I use a trainer twice a week for an hour each session. I always start with a run to get warmed up. Usually a "pyramid run". Jog for 5 minutes, then up the mile/hour by one for a minute, raising the MPH each following minute by one point until I'm at 10MPH. Today (as usual) we started with core for about 15 minutes. Then on to bicep, tricep and shoulders. Wednesday I'm sure will be chest, back and legs. Every so often I'll have a full sessin of plyometrics.

I'd like to say I mix in two days of running on the streets for 3 miles, but I've been really slacking on that lately. I'm bad.

I work out to feel good about myself, not necessarily for golf, however it has helped my game. My trainer is very in-tune with the mental approach to lifting (being a past competition body-builder) and she pushes me in my sessions to test the limits of my concentration. Whether its the beginning middle or end of my workout she wants my concentration up, same with my golf during tournament rounds. No time for the mind to wander.

    • At Sheep’s Ranch, Bandon Dunes. Shot an 84. That wind was nasty going from like hole 7 forward. It was like a 3-4 club wind if in the face. Greens are tricky with the natural grass. 
    • Yes. The full swing is not that different, and speed is important with all of them. You don't see Tour players hitting their driver 310 and then hitting their 7I 160. Of course, but they're nothing like those for the full swing.
    • How about with the high numbered irons such as the 9 iron? Is the swing the same with that? If that's the case then I stand corrected.  OK, although there is physics involved in the putt too. 
    • I have a master's in Spanish linguistics and I like black holes.
    • I didn't say it was unfeasible. That's not what you said. And… be careful there. Not around the club's COM, man.
