This weekend will be a real TOUGH SERIES. The Yanks lead the BoSox by 5 1/2 games, BUT if the Beloved Boston Boys sweep the series, the lead will be cut to 2 1/2 games. I hope that happens, since it will make for a real tight finish for the pennant.

Some rivalries are timeless, whether it's nationalistic or regional. Others pit the best players of the day going head to head.

My favourites.

Soccer/Football:
England v. Germany
France v. Italy
Argentina v. Brazil
English fans v. the world

International Hockey
Sweden v. Finland
Canada v. the USSR
Canada v. Russia (especially the World Juniors)
Canada v. Sweden
USA v. Canada
Czech v. Russia
Czech v. Slovakia

Calgary v. Edmonton
Calgary v. Vancouver
Boston v. Montreal
Bruins fans v. Habs fans
Wings v. Ducks
Wings v. Avalanche (a few years ago)
Wings v. Joel Quennville

Tennis:
Federer v. Nadal
Roddick v. himself
Hewitt v. people who aren't racists
Serena v. Venus
Hardenne v. Clijsters

The list goes on and on. I like sports.

I went to college near Boston and root for the Patriots, the Bruins, the Celtics, and of course, THE BELOVED Boston Red Sox.

This weekend is going to showcase the 2 best rivalry in sports. The Yanks vs some second place team.

The other is my Bengals vs the steelers. God i hate the steelers. If you get a chance to watch this game i would. It is going to be very hard hitting. these 2 teams do not like each other and it is well known. If you follow either team. Nobody else really realizes it. This could either be a great weekend or a terrible weekend. Here's hoping for a good weekend.

How about this: Army deployed with fixed bayonets, facing the crowd, to keep rival spectators apart. I'm told that was regular in Celtic-Rangers football (soccer) matches in the early 20th Century.

Fierce rivalries that don't necessarily involve danger to life & limb:

England v Scotland in any sport - tiddlywinks upwards.
England v Wales in Rugby Union
BRISTOL v those runts down the road - Bath, I think they're called. Appropriate - they need a wash cos they smell.

Europe v USA, Ryder Cup

Federer/Nadal

Senna/Prost (F1)

England/Australia (cricket and pretty much anything else. LOVED the Olympics medal table!)
India/Pakistan (cricket)

Golf - it's looking increasingly like Tiger/Harrington, rather than Tiger/Phil. Padraig seems to put up more fight, more often.

That's enough rivalries for Friday evening.

On golf, you are right---at this time. Paddy does grind it out better and is definitely more consistent. He usually does not blow his chances with a bad round, like Phil does all too often.

So much for my comment that Paddy holds up better than Phil. It looks as if the Phil-Tiger rivalry has been revived. After a 73, including that nefarious snowman on the par 4, Phil shot 67-66-65! He may not be consistent all of the time, but boy, he can take it low when he is "on" his game.

I wanna know what people think about the greatest sports rivalries of all time. I personally think it has to be The Red Sox And The Yankees. What do you guys think?

I am a Red Sox fan and glad they made the playoffs and will take on the Angels. However-----------they backed into the playoffs. They have lost six games in a row, and had a big enough lead over Texas to make it in spite of their awful losing streak. They do not look very strong going into the post-season.

But--------if they do beat the Angels (and they were 4-5 vs. them during the regular season), they will face their nemesis---the Yankees. I hope that happens!

There's no shame in getting shut down by Roy Halladay - probably the best pitcher in the game. Allowing 10 runs to the Jays on the other hand . . .

It's a tie between....

UNC v. Dook (obviously i side with the former)
and
OSU v. Michigan

I don't think you can discount a rivalry that transcends the game being played. In these cases, it does not matter if they are playing football, basketball, soccer, golf or checkers. They hate (respect on some level) each other. I just can't see how you can call Yanks/Red Socks the best rivalry of all time when no players would show up if they weren't being paid. Sure, it is a well-known, media-fed rivalry. But nothing like college/amateur sports.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
