Rkim....don't forget ....that scratch golfer is now playing ladies tees....that bunker or water hazard is now an easy carry....he can put his driver away if he wants....the greens will be softer and that tucked away pin is now sitting pretty in the middle of the green....

I guess we'll never know. It's impossible to know what the average scratch golfer drives the ball. The population is too vast. I find it hard to believe that if you took some scratch golfers from Bethpage Black, Torrey Pines or Augusta that they would struggle on an LPGA course from the ladies tees.

Again....I don't wanna here she's super girl....but the fact that an 11yr old girl qualified go their open tournament tells me there's a problem.

We do know.  I think there have been posts of golfers who played with lady college or former LPGA players.   I've seen their posts which goes contrary to your position.   I think the consensus of this thread after numerous posts was that an average scratch player may do OK in LPGA tournament but not good enough to beat the top players.   That's my position at least.

The 11 year old girla was an exception just like the 14 year old boy from China who qualified for US Open a few years back.   We don't hear from them since.   It's more of a problem with qualification process than any.

That's irrelevant. Numbers don't lie. Only 16 players on the LPGA average 260yds+ drives. Don't forget we're talking SCRATCH male golfers....I'm an 8 hcp and can easily out drive the longest hitter on the LPGA.

This is fun to think about, but Dude, seriously? You are an 8 handicap who can easily outdrive the longest hitter on the LPGA? Right now that's Yani Tseng at 280 average.

http://www.cbssports.com/golf/stats/LPGA/lpga-tour

And you average more than that? Easily you say, like 10-20 yards further? Under tournament conditions, not just casual rounds drinking beer with your buddies? C'mon. And doing it just once doesn't count.

And they aren't playing at altitude in Colorado either.

I think you are getting a little carried away in your argument :-)

Off topic. But i guess define "out drive" yes...I'm actually a good driver it's my best area. I'm an awful mess with short irons. Yes....I will have many drives over 300yds in a round of golf. No I'm not as accurate as the women....but overall my drives are longer than Tseng....I have many times hit drives over 320yds...before living in Colorado. Tesng? Never.

Then, you are an exception not the norm.   The best golfers (better than 8 HI) in my club averages about 270 yards.  Sure, they will hit a few drives passing 300 yards but even I can hit one that far once in a while.   I am sure Yani has hit father than 320 many times in her career.   Her drive average yesterday at one point (from LPGA official page) was 300 yards.   Lexi, Michelle, Aryia can all hit past 300 yards if they want to.   The official LPGA stats don't reflect that.

I've actually thought aobut this a great deal... Forgive me if someone has already mentioned it but I wasn't reading through everything.  I always thought the same way you do IACAS.

The problem is that you have women like Michelle Wie who is literally the size (height wise/leverage wise) as a taller than average male.

She also could outdrive most of us by 20 yards.  Having said that, with all of those advantages (and a bunch I haven't mentioned) why has she not dominated the LPGA like tiger?

She should literally win every tournament with her advantages!

There must be something else at play too.

Ai Miyasato is tiny (and cute as a button) she is not long off the tee, but she figured out how to hit a hybrid onto their greens and get it to stop.  She is really good with no obvious advantages.

It really does make no sense to me as to why Michelle Wie isn't better than she is.  Maybe she isn't even a +handicap?  She does exhibit the kind of lack of consistency you would see from an amateur scratch golfer....

Ok so answer this: If the women can drive the ball as you say ...then upper body strength isn't the issue. And if the women can drive the ball 300yds if they want to....then why are their tees so much shorter?

Longer hitting LPGA players are doing well - Michelle had her best year last year.   But I don't think she has the accuracy to use her power.   I heard a GolfChannel host saying that she hit longer at age 14 than now.    Lexi who has better physical tool than Michelle lacks short game.   Ariya?  Ditto.   The game is being dominated by better than average drive hitter with solid all around game.   The biggest change I see is that the days of Ai and other players who hit 230 drive average has been OVER.   The LPGA courses have gotten longer (6700 yards for majors) and players have gotten better.

Not all women players can drive 300 yards or would they need to.    Average LPGA players drive average is 250 yardish and the tee distance reflects that.   IMO, it's more fun to watch that way.

In comparison, PGA tour players hit a drive and use wedge seemingly for all their par 4s.   I find that monotonous (almost boring), really.   If you watch LPGA, shot selection for their approach shots vary from wedge to hybrid and I find that more interesting to watch.  I can related to that more than watching Bubba hit 350 yards and grab a sand wedge for his 2nd shot.

I truly believe that to compete you would need to be a +2 and to be top 10 a +3.5 or better.

I thought the average PGA were approximately +4?

Low end on the PGA is a +4. That is like Web.com from what I understand. Bubba is like a +8. So maybe a +2 then.

Wow, that's pretty good.

I guess it helps when your approach shots are a 20 yard chip or less. ;-)

Quick google search helps:

It looks like a +2 is good to go on the LPGA.

Well, all you need to do is to lose 1.9 strokes!

    • No, @StuM, it's too early for that. Everyone, please DM @StuM with your GHIN #. If you do not have a GHIN #, message Stu (and include me) to explain. Thank you. We'll lock handicaps (so @StuM can create some charts for the playing handicaps) on… the end of the day May 28. That'll give @StuM the 29th and 30th to look them up and plug them into a spreadsheet.
    • Day 56. Played 9. Best score I’ve ever had made possible by good driving. 14 shots better than Monday haha. Did a very quick stack session after the round.
    • This  is  certainly  one reason golf ratings are  plummeting Golf’s moment of truth is here, and the sport is badly flailing Nonexistent negotiations and missed opportunities for reconciliation between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have the sport stuck in place. "Golf’s moment of truth is here, and the sport is badly flailing. Half the sport’s best or most notable players play on one tour, half on the other. They all only come together at the four majors — the next one, the PGA Championship, tees off next week — and then spiral off into their own tournaments, cashing massive checks in front of rapidly dwindling audiences."   Here  is another reason. Xander Schauffele hit an unplayable shot  on his  last  hole but  instead  of taking a  penalty  he and the  idiot  official decided some  cable was  in the way(it wasnt) and  he  got to get a free  placement  of  his  ball with a  clear shot to the green. Soft players and enabling  officials are  helping  tank ratings. If  i were the  official it  would  be  take a penalty  or  hit it where  it  lies.
    • I was trying to keep it simple for him. 😉
    • Absolutely. It's definitely something that took me a long time to learn. One of the things I kept telling myself during my tournament (out loud, mind you) was, "Stick to the plan." There was the temptation to cut off doglegs with the driver because I was hitting it well, at one point on #15 I actually walked to the tee box with it in my hand. I was like, wait a minute, this is not the plan. Put it back and hit 6 iron.
