Harding Park in San Francisco (host of the next President's Cup) has some temporary greens now, as the grounds crew burned up five greens with 'excessive fertilizer.' Have you ever heard of this? I'd be pretty upset if I played there...

Yeah, I've heard of it. I've burned out a few spots in my yard with extra fertilizer.

I've seen a neighbor burn stripes into her yard. She had one of those push spreaders and let it overlap too much. She tried to put extra water on it when she noticed, but it was a little out of reach at that point.

You would think a grounds crew would have this down, though. I'll bet somebody got reamed.

this can happen pretty easily with synthetic fertilizers.

On my lawn, I use organic fertilizer:

also add some green sand (for iron) and epsom salts for magnesium

An Arnold Palmer signature course by my house had this happen to them as well. They lost a couple big and expensive outings because the greens were in such rough shape.

The Ravines in Saugatuck.

About 10 minutes south of Holland.

I played their once this summer before the greens were messed up. Nice course, but really expensive when there are many other good courses in the area.

The local course I play last year had very bad problem's and depending on who you talk to it was over fertilizer, doubled up in one night or Round-up mixed it but they lost 2 fairways....to the dirt, 5-6 colars around the greens and one green from a mower dragging what ever it was back and fourth. The sad thing is 3-4 of the colars around the greens still show signs of this with bare dirt in patchy spots.

It happens. Maintenance crews spread fertilizer over dry grass, then it rains and the little nitrogen pellets stick to the grass blades and it burns the grass. It'll recover.

OK, that makes sense. Only it didn't rain here...

Another problem which plagues greens is leaking transmission fluid from the lawnmower. This will put an ugly stripe across the green for a couple of weeks, and can deflect you put if you have to cross it.

One of my local courses asks golfers to spray mosquito repellent while on the cart path. They claim it kills the grass on the greens so they give out the repellent towelettes for free.

That's actually hydraulic fluid that leaks.

    • Day 206 (24 Nov 24)  - An easy session with the 54deg wedge and hard foam balls / one simple goal - distance control thru backswing length while not decelerating.  Had a playing partner comment they noticed me decelerating on a couple short wedge shots in last round.  Hit from distances from close to 40yds down to 20.
    • Musgrove Mill hole #15 was converted to a par 3 after Hurricane Helene. Today, I had 145 from the tee which is a perfect 9-iron for me. I aimed just right of the hole and pulled it a few feet. Clanked off the stick down into the hole and ricocheted out of the hole 13’ away. Drained the putt for a birdie after repairing the hole which was damaged . Not sure if it would have counted as a HIO, but I was pretty excited!
    • Day 55 - 2024-11-24 Did five levels of Operation 36 on GSPro (different courses). 🙂 Was -4 from 200 yards (32) intentionally laying up on each hole (i.e. not hitting a 5I or something). Shot… 22, 24, 26 from 25, 50, and 100 yards. I forget my 150-yard score, but obviously it was < 36. Putting was odd… (and I did it with the wedge or a 7I or whatever was in my hand).
