Thinking about adding something between my 3 Hybrid and 3 Wood. Considering 2 Hybrid or 5 Wood. Thoughts on strengths of each of these clubs and other recommendations.

Posted
There are a lot of factors. 2 hybrid can be either 19* or 17*, while a 5 wood is usually be 18 *. The 5 wood will usually go farther, but it will be less versatile because they are harder to hit off of the fairway and ot of the rough. A 5 wood would be better for the tee though. You have to hit them both and see if you need a better club off of the tee or a better club from the fairway.

I chose a 2 iron hybrid because i wanted to be able to have an easier shot into par 5 greens. The hybrid also goes higher IMO and lands softer.

I play a 17* 2h instead of a 3w or 5w. I rarely use it off the tee because I generally hit my driver pretty straight. The 2h is so easy to hit, its great for attacking par 5 greens and bump-and-runs from under trees in the rough when you need to advance the ball along way.

The 5 wood is resting in the spare bedroom now that I'm bagging the 19* 2h.

I disagree, My cobra 5 wood out of the rough is absolutely fantastic, I dislike hybrids. But its really all about pref. if you hit ur hybrid well go for it

I have a 18.5* G10 5wd, and a TaylorMade TP 17* hybrid. After playing both, I'd lean towards the hybrid. They both hit roughly the same distance, I've been 250ish off the tee with the 5wd, and I've used the hybrid to be pin high (missed right) from 245yds with the hybrid. The hybrid is a little easier to hit off the deck, and I definitely feel it's better out of the rough.

5 wood is actually an extremely easy club to hit out of the rough. It will fly higher and longer than a 2 hybrid of the same loft. The weighting of woods is much lower so the ball will come up higher. Hybrids bring the weight to the back of the club up higher so you can get the ball up higher than an iron but still get the penetrating trajectory which may not stop if you don't have the clubhead speed. I'd say go with a 5 wood. Even though hybrids are the new trend, it's not good to believe they are miracle workers. If you're looking for that piercing wind tee shot like you would have with a 2 iron with more forgiveness, yeah, the hybrid would be right up your alley. But a stinger is accomplished pretty easily with woods as well. My recommendation is to use hybrids for iron replacements and not wood replacements. There's a reason most tour pro's haven't gotten rid of them for hybrids.

I love my hybrids...don't get me wrong....but for me their results diminish somewhere between the 3H and a 2H.

I tried a 15 deg G10 hybrid last year for several rounds.....I just couldn't pull it off with any degree of consistency.

A 3/4/5 wood is easier for me to hit under most conditions.

The rough is.....well.....rough. I take my medicine when I find myself here....no matter the club choice.

i have Cleveland HiBore 2i Hybrid and 5w both 19*. 5W goes higher but the 2iHybrid is more versatile. I can swing the 2i Hybrid with the same swing as a 5w with a result of a lower trajectory, and i can swing as an iron and get a very workable....hiighhhhhhhhhhhhh ball...b e a utttttttiful

I say it depends on your strengths, are you a strong iron player or wood player. I personally don't like the hybrids and do not carry one, I play a 5 wood.

Ive got a 2H that i took out of the bag because i just dont hit it well, a warrior golf 17 deg. I can hit my 3(20 deg) much more consistently and farther, and like the 4 and 5 as well. Ive got a new 5 wood and 7 wood on the way, maybe then ill be able to give a more accurate comparison but I hit my 3 wood ok out of the fairway and rough, though i usually just use my 3 hybrid as I have more confidence and use the 3 wood primarily off the tee. Most of the par 5's around here arent that long, usually 3 wood and 3h, and im inside of 100 for my 3rd and Im not a real long hitter.

I just think the smaller size of the hybrids make them better out of the rough but that is all personal preference. I just dont feel like i can take a full hack out of the rough with my woods

I think it just depends on the company.. I know my cobra 5 wood is absolutely fantastic outta the rough it really getting underneath the ball to lift it, its definitely my favorite club

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
