I have always struggled with inconsistently with my fairway wood. Companies make hybrids with 15 degrees of loft, which is basically a 3 wood...

My idea is that a 15 degree hybrid would be easier to hit compared to a 3 wood.

Players such as Anthony Kim use a hybrid as their fw.

Just an idea, what do you think?

I hit a hybrid instead of a 2-iron or 5-wood.

So, not a 3W replacement, but a 5W replacement (albeit a tad lower in stock launch angle).

Sure, but here is my example of A.K. He uses a 14 degree Adam's hybrid as a 3 wood or even a strong 3 wood. http://blogs.golf.com/equipment/2008...y-kims-wi.html

I just picked up a Titleist 906F2 15* 3 Wood a couple weeks ago, but depending on the course or the shot I can interchange it with my 16* Cobra Baffler DWS hybrid. The 3 Wood is slightly longer, but the hybrid is a tad easier to control. If you prefer hybrids a 14-16* model is a great replacement for a 3 wood.

Yeah, I love the feel of hybrids... easy to hit, easy to launch and easier in the rough. I think I will replace my 3 wood with a hybrid.

Has anyone else replaced their 3 or 5 wood with a hybrid?

I like hitting hybrid instead of lower irons, but for 13º through 19º I prefer fairway woods.

That used to be the case with Anthony Kim, but not any more.

I carry a 3 wood, but only use it on the tee. I hit hybrids off the fairway. Not "instead" of a 3 wood, but because I was never a great fairway wood player and find that a well struck 3 hybrid does the trick for me.

I do, just recently put the 909H 15 degree in my bag instead of my 3-wood... I have more options with the hybrid than the 3-wood

I just replaced my 15* 3w with a Nickent 3dx rc 17* 2 hybrid. Someone else here posted that he/she feels like cheating hitting this club. I can see why. It is extremely easy to hit. I get just about the same carry, a little less roll, but a lot more consistency. I was susceptible to pop ups under pressure with the 3W, not any more with the hybrid.

I am tempted to try the Nickent 3dx 1H 14*, but am happy with my current set up.

thanks for the input. I have trouble hitting my 3 wood off the tee. Just cant seem to hit it straight. It seems like the best thing for me is just to replace it with a 15 degree hybrid. I'm a big titleist fan, I will try out the 909h.

your welcome. Off the tee, I tee hybrids as I would a 2 or 3 iron. I push the teen down far so I can just see and feel the nub of the tee sticking above the ground. It's basically "the perfect lie" ball position with maybe 2-3mm extra height.

I actually tried this in a tournament the other day for the first time with a 16 degree Cobra Baffler DWS. It worked out well in the beginning but throughout the round i found i was in many spots where i could have used the low shot that rolls very far with the 3 wood which i couldnt accomplish with the hybrid which got into the air very easily.

I'm going to a Driver, 3W, 5W, 3H, 5H setup. Gave up the 3 and 4 iron...but the 5H really covers the 3i. I think the 5W and 3H are going to be really close distance wise...but I know the hybrids will hit real well from the rough.

My set goes 4i, 5H, 2H, Driver.

4 iron is 205 yards.
5 hybrid is 220 yards.
2 hybrid is 240 yards.
Driver is 270 yards.

I use a 17° hybrid as my 5 wood, but I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of it and buy the 5 wood, I can't hit the hybrid and my 3 wood I found it pretty easy to hit.

Cheers!

I replaced my 5W with a Callaway 3 ibrid, which is like a cross between a traditional iron and a hybrid. Both go about the same distance, but I am much more consistent and accurate with the ibrid from fairway lies.

Well he now uses a fairway wood but the shaft is cut down considerably to be more like his hybrid length.

I have a 20º hybrid instead of a 5-wood. The 20º goes about 210 and the 3-wood goes about 230. I almost rarely ever use the fairway in the rough unless its sitting up or very short rough.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
