I hit a perfect iron shot with my AP2s and heard the "wizzz"

Anyone know of a video that demonstrates this sound?

If you've ever played baseball, it is similar to the sound a hard throw makes as it is coming in. It's the sound of the seams as they rotate quickly in the air.

In golf you tend to hear it more easily if you're standing to the side and someone else hits a flush shot. Generally low irons. It's the sound of the ball and dimples spinning and passing a lot of air through it. Go to a pro tournament and you'll hear it all over. It's faint, but it's there. I really think you here it more in the right conditions though. If the air is thin you probably won't here it. If it is hot with no humidity I think you'll more easily here it. But these are my assumptions.

The fact that you hit a 9 iron almost 145yds is impressive

I use my PW usually when I'm at 150 or under... anything past 150 and I use my 9i. Didn't know that was so rare / impressive...

Ah, it's such a great sound and makes me feel good. I'd put it up there with fixing a ball mark after a nice iron shot. Good feelings.

I actually had asked my friend a couple days ago about this sound and he said that he doesn't remember ever hearing it after hitting one of his irons and I thought, since he's pretty bad, that he wasn't catching them crisply. *shrugs* Apparently others don't hear it either, though.

Love that sound!

I hear the hiss when I hit my irons crisp, it's a great feeling.

I would assume a single digit handicap hears that sound quite often...

Cool experience.

I've been reading parts of Tiger Woods's "How I Play Golf" book every night this week. In one part he is describing his irons as his aggressive scoring weapons and when he's hitting them well how he loves the hiss the ball makes coming off them. It's hard for me to hear mine hiss....at least over the instant groaning and pleading with the ball that I'm doing. Good luck with your new irons. Those AP2s are pretty sweet sticks.

I played a round last weekend that started early in the morning on a humid day. There was a lot of moisture in the air and I was teeing off with my 15* 3-wood. Now, I happened to be striking the ball great on this morning, and could hear the whizzing sound on each shot. It was very cool, my Dad was getting a huge kick out of it and would laugh after every tee shot.

Another great place to go to hear this sound is the driving range, especially if yours has an upper level where you can stand and listen to balls whizzing by under your feet.

not sure why this is impressive, but ok pretty standard 9i is 145-155 as a single digit hcp, wouldnt you expect it? to the OP: congrats on the new AP's, hear great things about them

The fruit bat can hear well so it can listen fruit falling off the trees as it's making a slight sound when falling to the ground?

No I hit a 9 iron 130-135 max and most of the guys I play with hit it about the same. There's one guy I play with who hits it about 145 but thats about it. I'm not saying it can't be done...

also I'm not sure what being a single digit handicap would make me expect it? The guy that won our last match play hits a 9 iron about 125 and he's a scratch.

You just can't beat that sound. That along with the sound of a solid compressed driver is just an amazing feeling!

I wouldn't say that I would expect it. I am one of the longer hitters in my group and my 9i only goes around 135 consistently. I don't think single digit handicaps have anything to do with how far you hit your irons.

I played a round last Saturday, only my 4th round of playing my new AP2s, and omg I hit the most perfect 9 iron, and heard the ball "wizzz" like the pros!

So... you say you play off single figures.

Now, you hit a solid 9 iron ONCE and it is an event worthy of a thread on this site. One would have thought that a single digit player would be pissed off if he didn't do that most of the time with short irons. Very strange.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.
