How much back spin should I you have?

With my wedges and thru my 7 iron I get back spin anywhere from five to 12 feet on drives and long chips, frustrating at times when your pin high. is this a good or bad thing , I have had it back spin right off greens before , how can I control this on demand ? 755 / vokeys and prov1.

that's crazy. I stop wedge thru 7 consistently and sometimes 6, but I never get more than a little skip backward even with my wedges. Never any roll.

You have to be able to hit more club less distance. If you're hitting a PW 115 yards at full power and it spins back 10-12 feet (which might be too much) you have to figure out how to hit a 9-iron 115. By hitting more club you won't be swinging as hard and it will take the spin off.

There are other ways to do it, but this is what works best for me.

The other option is just to play for it and play a distance 3-5 yards further than what you need. Although if you don't spin it back you can leave yourself in some bad spots.

Change ball maybe or you might have a really aggressive swing which you dig down into the ball with. I think i can safely say that we all want to see our shots spin back but i want to know how a 36 handicapper can spin the ball back considering it sounds as if you do it all the time with short irons. Are you talking every shot with your short irons? or are these just one off occurrences you would rather not have happen again? if its every shot it sounds like you shouldn't be off 36.

couldnt have said it better myself. these are pretty much your two options, the first being the optimal choice. if you want the ball to sit and stop, take more club, swing softer. harder struck=much more spin.

Agreed, plus it does the least "damage" to your swing (assuming that you don't wish to have to change it just for this issue).

sorry to hijack the thread but, on my 7-wedge shots i get maybe a foot or 2 of backspin, but mostly just make a big crater on the green and it hops back a little. am i just playing on really soft greens or what? not saying that I would want a lot of backspin, just curious

in this scenario its not as much about changing the swing because it is the same swing just softer... that is the most effective way to reduce spin; to use the exact same swing with a less lofted club. changing balls will help a little; but in my opinion more golf iq points are to be gained by learning to hit less lofted clubs for shorter distances.

Definitely agree with the last post, but I can say with certainty that the Pro V1 is a very spinny golf ball. It's too spinny for me as well, although I'm kind of shocked that this is something a high handicapper has to worry about. If you switch to the Pro V1x, this kind of behavior will decrease.

I'm not a high handicapper ,I have no idea how the 36 got into my profile and cannot figure out how to change it. :) I shoot a typical 81 to 84 with my best being a 1 under 35 on the front nine of a pretty hard coarse. I have no idea what my handicap would be as I have not set one up . More or less I just don't get the point. Thanks for all the replys so far .

No its not good, lol. Backspin (unless youre playing for it) is kind of an enemy when making an approach shot. On a straitforward approach shot, I want my ball to more or less stop were it lands, or even release 1 or 2 feet. You cant really control a ball that spins back that much, and thats the point. Once it lands it is at the mercy of the green, and that can get frustrating. It can come in handy when pins are tucked in the front, but with your spin you always have to play long, and that isnt always possible. I would try taking more club and swinging less agressively, that can get the backspin under control. Or switch to a harder ball like the prov1x or Taylormade TP red.
