How many putts can you have per 18 that you consider acceptable?

Hi all, I just played 18 yesterday, and while I didn't score that well, I felt I was as hot with the flat stick as I've ever been. I had 29 total putts yesterday. Far lower than what I usually do per 18. What's an acceptable amount to you guys out there? Just trying to find out what I should really be aiming for (Obviously, I'm aiming for as low as I can go, but would like a tangible number if possible).

I think under 30 is always good. Most of us are going to miss some greens so if you're around 30 putts then I think that reflects pretty well on your short game. I've always thought putting statistics were a bit misleading because if I'm one inch on the fringe it's not a putt but it all seems to even out in the end.

I agree with that. I know I would consider 36 putts to be unacceptable!

im not a pro like most here, but if I two putt most of the holes. Ill be happy with that, but thats if I get my ball in the green under par.

I think total putts is the most USELESS stat. Did u hit 18 greens and 2 putt every green for 36 or did u miss every green and 1 putt them all for 18, useless to compare.

Putts / GIR is much more effective at showing ability, and even that can be tricky to compare because one guy might have an average approach shot of 30' while another might have 50'. But it should be much better when looking at only one person. IMO if u really want to see how u did, record the distance of all your putts, then you can see how u perform at each distance.

Really, what if u hit 18 GIR? You wouldnt be happy with an even par round???

For me, anything more than 32 putts per round is unacceptable. If I have any holes where I 3-putt, its time to spend more time on the practice green.

Under 30 putts is good

I believe a pro had 21 putts for 18 holes during a tournament
my best was 26 putts

as it's already been said... if you get under 30 putts in a round, you're doing pretty good. i typically clock in 31-33 putts per round, which i can deal with, but i'd love to shave two or three of those off and regularly get 29-31.

I agree. 15 GIR and 36 putts is fine by me! 5 GIR and 30 putts, not so much.

I agree. 15 GIR and 36 putts is fine by me!

I rather have 30 putts regardless of how many greens I hit, that only means that I have one putts.

My focus is total putts per round and up and down percentage. Up and down with one putts go hand in hand.

I consider myself above average for putting but that's a relative term. The lil 9 hole muni course I play has pretty FLAT greens with the exception of two. Had my personal best round of 40 the other day and had 12 putts. I was happy all the way around. I have only had two 3 putts in my last 5 rounds.

my average is 32.4... my GIR average is 39%, but as of late both numbers have been a little higher.

currently I would say I am happy with 30 or less...

I'm OK with 30-32, depending on the course. I'm happy anywhere in the 20s.

Making putts from the fringe and chipping in are always nice to get it low.

For my typical game 36 putts putts would be a terrible number, because I DON'T hit that many greens in regulation. I keep my handicap at a manageable level by getting up and down, so one-putt holes are a necessity for me to score well. Today I had 26 total putts and shot a 4 over par 76. That included nine 2-putts, eight 1-putts, and a zero putt.

For me, a low number of putts usually tells me that my chipping is good. When the putts get up over 32 or so, then I need to head to the chipping green for a practice session.

I'm satisfied with 30-33 putts. Two putting every hole, especially since I've been approaching quite well recently, is unacceptable, but then again I've never been that good with the flatstick... 25-28 putts, with the way I've been approaching sounds possible, though. Need to spend more time on the putting green, I suppose.

904F 17* 4-wood Sabre Stiff
MP68 3-PW Project X 6.0
52* Vokey Spin Milled -wedge

Redwood ZB

I prefer a ball, but may occasionally hit almost anything.

You know I have never really thought about it but one thing I do think about NOT doing is 3 putting... If I 3 putt even once in a round I am on the putting green after the bets are done practicing a little...
