Took me a while to get my bearings in golf, so breaking 100 took a bit of time. Breaking 90 took a good amount of practice, too. The closest I've ever come to breaking 80 was with an 82, but I don't play 18 holes nearly as much as I play 9.
In terms of numbers, well I've been playing golf seriously for about four years. First year was tough and I only broke 100 once or twice. Second year, broke 100 regularly but only broke 90 once (so I didn't really break 90 till last year on a regular basis). I generally shoot low-mid 80s. Have never broken 80... yet. ;)

started playing about 13. broke 100 during that same year and 90 as well. broke 80 at 16 two years later, and broke 70 at 17. i haven't broken 70 in 8 years since i was 19, but i hope to do it by next spring, unless i get lucky before then.

100 and 90 in the first 6 months. It depends how often you play.

80 took me 3 years but I could have done it quicker if I had played more often.

75 is my next target, I think I have had a 76 once before but thats a long time ago.

i'd love to break 70 within the year. Although that would be quite an improvement I intend to play a lot more if my circumstances work out well and I'm going to try to optimize my equipment and approach too.

I first broke 100 in about 4 months, at age 25.

Then I broke 90 for my one only time in March of this year, at 10 months.

I haven't played golf since May due to three bulging discs in my back, but I got an MRI two weeks ago and they have finally healed ! I've been doing some physical therapy to get back to normal and hope to hit a few balls at the range this weekend....

Oh what a lost summer this has been....I wonder what the hell I'm going to shoot in my first round back? I'm setting the line at 107. Take your bets, guys.

i feel kind of bad posting this. I started on a par three course. The course had a long par 3 of 210 yards and i had a five wood that i would choke up on. I played 6-10 hours a day for 7 months. Then i got invited to a little course in little rock called hindman. I didn't have a driver so i used that 5 wood off the tee and shot 76. Your proabably thinking to yourself, oh impossible! But i did it. On the way back to hot springs a drive of about an hour, all my friends would talk about was my score. The kept saying "you broke 80, you broke 80!" i was like, "huh? Is that good?" i soon learned after i joined belvedere cc what all the hype was about.

wow!!!!!!!!

That is impressive but really in the sense that I could not imagine playing golf 10 hours a day for 7 months. That is equal to about 400 four hour rounds. I'd say I've played 250-300 in my golf lifetime.

I am 33 and have been playing for 3 years.
I broke 100 in my first year
90 in my second
I am still trying to break 80. Had an 83 earlier this year, but I just don't get to play as much as I would like.

That is allot of time to be able to devote to golf. I played 100+ rounds one year and had a night job, belonged to a public course. That was allot of golf and my index dropped 4 points during the summer. This year I only have 27 or so rounds in.

So thats when I broke 100, It took 6 Months but 3 were off months considering its cold in Michigan. I first broke 90 on 7/6/09, I shot an 89. That took about 3 months of playing. And I still havent broken 80 but got close, (83).

Under 100: 41 years
Under 90: 44 years

LOL. I'm counting from 1963.
Round 1 was when I rode my bike to the local 9 holer with four clubs over the handlebars. Quickly lost all my balls to water and a gang of little thieves that would steal them off the fairway. The water, by the way, was a sewage canal. Even us kids knew better than to put our hands in it.

Round #2 was in modern times in 2001 when my office went to the local pitch and putt. First first tee shot landed on green! I proceeded to three putt, not knowing that would become my curse.

So if we take out that wasted 38 year hiatus, it took this 61 year old duffer 3 years to shoot a 99 and 6 years to shoot 89. Sigh, best was an 88 this year and just shot a 108 and lost 8 balls two days ago. Ugggh.

Broke 100 in less than a year, but took 7 years to break 90 as I didn't golf much (maybe 20 rounds per year on average. I started playing weekly this year and it took 2 months to get to playing in the 90's all the time and about 2 more months to break 90, still haven't broken 80 but I have shot a 83 4 times so it is close.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
