Like i said before, we have a small active memberbase, and people know each other - and if something like this happens, word spreads, and you will have a though time getting socialising going in the future.

You did the right thing. As you said the cheaters were disrespecting you and your club.

We need to quit feeding this trill that's about as dumb as a box of rocks guys. And to the OP, you did the right thing, and you're no less of a man for it.

What you are really supposed to do is to confront the guy, in front of the whole foursome, BEFORE starting at the next tee. If after discussion the foursome does not all agree on the penalty (or lack of penalty), then it should be noted and REPORTED at the end of the round to the tournament scoring head. They will listen to all sides and then rule accordingly.

There is no rule of golf that says "don't rat out a cheater," and most if not all tournaments have rules in place to deal with reporting a violation.

Reporting the rules doesn't make you a crybaby - everyone playing by the rules (in a COMPETITION) is the only thing that makes the competitive nature of the tournament to be meaningful.

If you want to play some kind of Tony Soprano never-rat-out kind of game, fake macho 'tell it to his face' but have no balls to report it -- go ahead -- but don't have any delusions that you're doing the right thing, the smart thing, the fair thing, the moral thing, or anything other than pandering to your own home-brewed 'moral' code that is quite obviously in opposition to maintaining and enjoying and orderly and pleasant society.

Having just statred to play the game I've learnt that when you're out there playing there is just so much temptation to cheat and I don't think it's acceptable, it's a game of skill and judgement and you should roll with the puches - if you hit OB or whatever take it on the chin. This was/is a game for gentleman and you could measure someones integrity by how they played golf. At the end of the day, if I see someone cheating after I slogged my guts out, they're going to know about it, and if they cheat me in a comp, everyone's going to know.

Who the hell cares? I don't get why the vast majority of golfers out here let crap like this ruin their day. Who gives a crap if the guy posts a 63 but shot a 109?

I 100% disagree with this.

Hey. it's TOURNAMENT dummy. Not a scramble... everyone playing his own ball. The guy was blatantly cheating. Under the Rules of Golf it is the responsibility of EVERY player to protect the field in a stroke play competition. If you can't understand that, then you don't belong in the course in any sort of competition.

Give me a break.

You are so far off base it isn't even worth trying to explain it to you.

I had no idea that cheating during a tournament with prizes was so wide spread and (seemingly) accepted. Where do people draw the line? Does a team of 4 just make up scores?

It's only accepted by soupbone there.

My approach is to be direct with them and leave others out of it. If you're in an outing with 100 other guys -

If everyone played under your philosophy, then you're right, nobody would know. But if we all went by the rules, then it wouldn't be an issue except for your group..... which is why in a stroke play competition you ARE supposed to "rat". By tacitly accepting his behavior you are screwing the entire field. Nice guy....

Where is YOUR integrity? By signing that card, you're declaring that the score is accurate making you just as guilty for cheating as he was.

Seriously. When you sign the score card, you're attesting with YOUR WORD that it was scored correctly. If you don't believe that, you have no business signing it. To do otherwise is to admit that your word is meaningless. Nice.

Shotgun tournament today, with good sponsor prizes. Two of the guys i never played with before and are med./bad players. The other is a regular playing partner of mine.

After all his rediculous replies, It looks like "Soup" must have been the player that you reported for cheating,,,lol!!! If your out for a casual round and a guy is cheating with nothing on the line then the correct answer is "Who Cares"! If the guy brags about beating you then you let him have it. But, If your in any kind of competition and you don't call out a scumbag like that then your just as wrong as they are. Anyone who tolerates or advocates that kind of behavior does not belong anywhere near a golf tournament or children! We don't need thier lack of morals rubbing off on kids!

I 100% disagree with this.

Technically this is wrong. In tournament play if your keeping another players score then your obligated to the other players in the tournament to keep his score correctly. In a tournament you are the referee watching the game as well as the player. I dont care if I'm playing for a 50,000 first place or a plastic trophy, the last thing I would do is let some hack who's Mommy and Daddy didnt teach him the difference between right and wrong pencil whip me out of any type of prize.

Amen for turning the rodent in, the game is hard enough without having to compete with some chops eraser. -Beane

If I'm in a tourney, and I take a 6 but my scorer asks "you took a 5 there, right?" 9 times out of 10 I'm going to say 'yes.'

Surely you aren't serious???

It's not his responsibility to count your strokes, only to verify that he wrote down what you told him. If you lied about it, then you are the cheater, even a worse cheater than soup... and I don't want you anywhere near me on a golf course.

Golf is a great game that requires you and mainly only you to call a penalty on yourself... That is why I love it... I hate people who cheat at golf when there is money, prizes or a championship on the line... It is a gentlemens game, if you are going to cheat to win then you really should not be playing the game... If you are out with your friends hacking around the ball having fun then it is fine, have a blast...

Your advice is terrible and contrary to the rules and spirit of the game. A lot of clubs would suspend you from competitions if you are complicit in cheating.

I am actually sorry I was away from the computer yesterday and didn't get in this discussion.

To the OP, you made the correct decision. I would be extremely pissed if I lost by one to a guy who cheated. It would make me just as upset if someone knew this person cheated and didn't say anything about it. Every other sport has officials at any level. Golf is a unique sport where we officiate ourselves and those around us.

I don't even know what to say to Campbell's Chunky. You see someone do a wrong and you just let it go? It is enough in your mind that you know they know you know? What if they don't know that you know? What about everyone else that got wronged? They don't know what happened so they get screwed? That is a real stand up guy there.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.
