considering subbing out a hybrid or two for irons?

Once I become a better player(like you) I'd consider going back to 3 and 4 irons, but for right now you couldn't take my hybrids from my bag. I don't have much problem working them I guess.

I'm sure there is a practical side to it. For me its a pride thing, my deuce and three iron arent going anywhere. If Tiger ever starts carrying a hybrid then I will quit golf.

I play the club which allows me the best opportunity to hit a good shot from a given distance.

I have one 16 degree and find it to be the most versatile club in my bag. It fills a gap between my 3 wood and 3 iron and is great from the rough or any questionable lie. It has become my go to club on tight fairways from the tee and is an exccelant club for laying up on par 5's. as for long par 3's I'll use it but not too many par 3's require 235-245. I amnot considering replacing a 3 or 4 iron though as I like those just the way they are. I do think all players should carry at least one.

Yeah man, I hate hybrids. Call me crazy, but it sounds like you have the same feeling i do--I just love the feeling of a solid 3 or 4 iron compared to any hybrid. I carry the 3 iron and will switch it out with a 5 wood depending on what the playing conditions call for--carry no hybrids.

I went over to the dark side about 2 years ago now and pulled my 2 and 4 irons. I still keep the 3 iron because it gives me some additional flighting options, but I'll swap it out for a 4th wedge if the course dictates. Unless you put a gun to my head, you couldn't get my hybrids out of my bag! The damn things oughta be illegal.....

What are you using for 4 iron distance now? I also have a 21 degree hybrid but find that's pretty much a perfect 3 iron. So there seems to be a gap in your bag. I just can't hit a three iron any more.

I like my 4 iron for the same reason you mentioned. On par 3's, I like to work the ball and I just can't successfully work my hybrid

my hybrids are very inconsistent. i switched to hybrids this season and at first they felt much easier to hit than long irons. i hit them great and long at the range but when i go to them on the course, i usually don't hit them well off the fairway or out of the rough. they are very handy off the tee for me though. my go-to club for longer approach shots is the 7 wood. it has the same loft as a hybrid but for some reason i hit it much better and it's more reliable. haven't figured out how to hit the hybrids consistently yet. i know you are supposed to hit down on them but i haven't quite gotten comfortable with them. i don't miss the 3 and 4 irons though i have to admit.

usually i'll cut the 21 degree if i need to hit the ball 195-200.

My irons are 1 degrees strong so that gap is not what you'd think. Actually, this is the only consistent flight path i can get with the hybrids. When i try to play a draw (my natural flight path, i can lose them way left.

I would say whatever helps you lower your score Pride or not, If I score lower with a hybrid, so be it. You can always put the irons backin your bag

I don't have any, tried to use a couple but couldn't get the hang of them. I've perfected the slice with them, back to the 2, 3, and 4 irons.

If your irons allow you to get the ball up in the air and land softly, by all mean go for it.

I switch to a hybrid and taken out my 5, 4 & 3 irons. I have learned to choke up and hit partial shot with the hybrid for distances from 190 - 170 yards with a high or low ball flight so no swithing back for me.

I just started playing golf this year and have tried hybrids and irons as well.

For some odd reason, I cannot control a hybrid like I can a longer iron. Therefore, I have subbed out hybrids for my long irons!

i carry a 4 iron for punch shots. I can't tell you the last time I hit it with a full swing. i go from a 5 iron 175 to 185 to a 3H 195 to 205...no gap at all.

My 4 iron punch has actually turned into a pretty good weapon for me...i guess I have spent to much time in the trees...

Actually I have just done the same thing this week. I have bought 3 and 4 iron Mizuno fli hi irons to add to my MP 60s. Thinking of ditching my PING G10 21 degree hybrid now. I bought the MP Fli hi irons because they seem to have a bit more forgiving element to them rather than hitting the 3 and 4 iron MP 60 irons.

Just feel like I can get a better quality shot with these Mizunos especially playing with so much wind where I live.

I may still get an 18 degree hybrid to replace my 5 wood though.

I think it is a case of feeling more confident in your swing. If you can hit the 3 and 4 irons then they give much better control and options than the hybrid.

When i started playing again back in June of this year, I bought a Walter Hagan set with 3/4/5 hybrids... and found that i had a real hard time hitting with the 3 or the 4, i would slice horribly just about everything. A month ago i switched to irons, and after 2 trips to the range am dead straight with them, and have a much easier time hitting them from the fairway/rough/tee than i did the hybrids. I don't think i'll ever go back to hybrids!
