My father played golf as young man, but he played rarely when I was growing up. My father was a teacher and we lived in very small towns in rural Kansas, and hunting was his passion. There was not enough money to have more then one hobby, so in the summers he would help on a farm, and then hunt it in the winter.

However, now that he is retired, the bird population has diminsted to next to nothing, he is a rabid golfer. He will play well over 200 rounds in a year. There are even times in November and December were he will hunt in the morning and golf in the afternoon, weather permitting.

My dad got me into golf at a very early age. I basically had a club in my hand from the time I could walk. As far back as I can remember, he and I used to always go out to the driving range early Sunday mornings when no one else was out there. Because of this and the fact that (at least when I used to live in Houston) we usually play together, he seems to think that I'm his "swing coach" and constantly wants me to watch his swing to help fix whatever he is doing wrong. I've figured out he only does about 4 or 5 things wrong and I just go through the list and watch for those things.

The funny thing is that he and I have completely different types of golf games. He is the calculating, safe golfer that has a great short game that helps him never do worse than bogey. I'm the big-hitter that'll either have a birdie/par or a double or more.

My father had never played golf until I started playing. After Id been playing a few years, he decided to give it an shot.
My father only plays a few times a year (when I go to NE Wisconsin and visit during the summer) but for someone who only plays a few times a year and never practices, he does pretty well.
IMO, if he actually devoted time every day to practice and played more often, I think he could be pretty decent.

I think I took to golf so much because it was a great way to get away from my parents.

My parents played so much that we were golf orphans in the Summer. My dad would play about 4 times a week. We had to learn to cook for ourselves. So my brother and I ended up cooking on the grill about 3 times a week. They would come home and then be arguing about what was wrong with my mom's swing. I have the same bug, but I haven't turned it into a second career yet.

I ended up playing on golf teams every year, even though I could have also been on varsity track team. I caddied, worked at the golf course some times. Lots of comments in the HS yearbook about golf. I wanted to make it a career somehow, but just didn't know how to make it happen.

Not sure how much my dad played before I came along but he probably played once a year if that when I was growing up. Funnily enough, since I started playing he's started to play a lot more too; getting out almost every week. Haven't played much together yet though because I usually play on Saturdays when it's club members only at my course and he plays early Sunday morning when I'm usually in bed .

Come from a long line of golfers personally.

Had a few low handicaps and some not so low, but all golfers in the true sense of the word - not necessarily confined to the skill level.

He was an athlete in UK in the 50s/60s -- a football league referee/linesman. Good at lots of sports, especially tennis, but not golf.

He tried, and got rid of the clubs pretty quickly, and stuck with other sports.

like several others have said, I got my dad and two brothers into it. Now my 21 month old has a sweeter swing than I do!

My dad never touched a club in his 66 years on this earth as far as I know. My son will not, however, be able to say that, as I'm sure I rank in the "rabid golf nut" category.

My father was an avid golfer, playing much more than twice a month. I wouldn't however consider him a "rabid golf nut."

My Dad is a golf nut, he plays all the time. He is quite good and has come within one shot of shooting his age several times (he just turned 69). He and I are the only father/son pair to both have our names on the club championship trophy at our course.

He actually got me into the game along with my grandfather.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
