Does anyone out there use - successfully - the Peak Performance Golf Swing promoted by Don Tranan? His son, D.J. Trahan, plays on the PGA Tour, and Don evidently has quite a business in golf instruction.

During the recent S&T; online session, I asked how the Stack & Tilt compared to Trahan/Peak Performance. No one was that familiar with Trahan's method, and iacas suggested I address this as a separate post.

Trahan's PPGS is a 3/4, arms-lead swing, and suggests that a backswing that rotates more than 70 degrees could lead to back injury.

Here is a website which Trahan had e-mailed me as part of a promotion. It contains multiple frames of his swing facing the camera, and an overhead view of a representative swing. Hope this is enough to compare.
http://www.peakperformancegolfswing.com/

Also, a second Trahan site offers Six Myths which wreck golf swings:
http://www.peakperformancegolfswing....isconceptions/

I looked through the 10 basic videos which he also sent as a promo, but none really state the overall essence of the swing he advocates. If we have any people who use Trahan, could you give us in three or four bullet points the key emphasis of his method?

Also, maybe non-Trahan people could examine the swing site and the Six Myths and see how it compares to Stack & Tilt.

I've done only a little looking into this (mostly via other people) and his swing is nothing like S&T; at all.

Here's something Don had to say:
As you all know, I believe, teach and play with the concept of swinging up to the T-Finish with all the clubs, especially with the irons. Hitting down on the ball is, I believe, the "#1 evil" in golf. Hitting down on the ball is a major cause of the upper body moving ahead of the ball in the downswing, or forward up-swing as I call it. This produces a myriad of problems, from loss of balance falling forward, to even pulling out of the shot and falling backwards, as well as the basic chunks, too thin shots, pulls and blocks.

In other words, hitting down on the ball with even your irons causes every bad shot in the book. Uh huh...

Other things Don says include (and again not me, but I'm quoting some other notable instructors): He teaches the 70 degree limited shoulder turn swinging the club on a maximum vertical incline plane (club does not go behind the toe line) and is a proponent of taking very little divot (even advocating hitting it thin if necessary). He also teaches starting the weight "pro-loaded right" requiring a well-timed hip bump to the left to move the swing toward the target. Stack & Tilt is wonderful in that it keeps the body centered (the stack) while allowing the upper body to turn on a consistent axis throughout the swing (the tilt). And of course you end up hitting down through the ball.

piece of junk...

Being a student of the game and the swing, I thought I'd check it out to see if it offered any good information. the video is crappy and not worth $10. It's basically a compilation of most of the 'teaser videos' and never even shows the full swing in slow-motion or breakdown, side-by-side or anything you'd expect from a 'quality' video these days. You get better insight watching the 'xyz sponsor cam' on this week's tour event.

I sent them an email and got a refund for the video, they let me keep the 'booklet'. the booklet had I think '1 tip' that was decent, I believe something about the inside of your right elbow being relaxed and pointing at the sky (not to the left) during your setup. Apparently something (I think) Ben Hogan promoted, as well.

The quote material outlined in blue is the Trahan swing’s

overall essence I was seeking. I never bought the full PPGS package, and got mainly bits and pieces from the promo e-mails and video clips. I had trouble seeing the big picture. I plan to keep my modified Hogan swing for the time being. That said, I really like the Playing Tips blog and the comparisons of different swing philosophies. I would like to be able to answer beginner’s questions about swings with decent information. Some have suggested I would make a good coach for the First Tee program, but I think I should be shooting the 80s regularly before I make that move. Thanks, iacas.

So while looking on the forums earlier I saw an advertisement for the Peak Performance Golf Swing. I was just curious what others thought about this swing and whether or not they have tried it.

Are there any sort of synopsis of this swing? Didn't find a whole lot on their website.

I bought in 2009. Went well no back pain. Not sure why I stopped. Rotational swing causes back pain. NO way I can play back to back days. Dragged out the 2009 DVD hitting 1.5 large buckets. NO pain. First round of the new season 82. I'm sticking with it this time. Age 64. 245 to 260yd drives. 160 yd 7 iron. R shafts.

  • 2 weeks later...

Been hitting balls with this "limited turn, vertical swing concept" for a few weeks now and NO back pain whatsoever. As I learn to trust this swing, I believe I can be breaking 80 again consistently. Even if I don't and stay about a 12 hdcp, I can play golf with no lower back pain. Yeeeeeehaaaaaawwww!

Been using this for quite a few years and like it.  S&T is nothing like this. It is a limited turn 3/4 swing pain free golf swing. I believe anyone who is struggling to play without back pain would find this swing as user friendly as you will find out there. At my age I doubt I will try to make the pro tour, but I do enjoy the game and this swing has made it so for myself and many others.

    • No, I'm not talking about "six footers uphill, slightly right to left." I'm going to indulge myself and talk about my favorite putts that I've ever hit. In no particular order… #9 at Whispering Woods The hole was cut middle left, and I was back right with about 40 feet to the hole, and six to eight feet of break. @DrizZzY (he'll be a semi-common theme here) was about 25' from the hole and he said "Do you need me to mark that" as his ball was really close to my line. I saw the line really, really clearly and, like the cocky jerk I am, said something like "no, leave it. I think I have to just miss your ball to make this." I saw my ball as having to pass within a few millimeters of his ball… and going in the middle. Well, I hit the putt, and as it passed his ball missing it by maybe 1.5cm… I said "ahhhhh, pulled it a little…" and… the ball fell in the left-center of the hole. I smirked at Sculley and he just said "you're such an ass." 🤣 I know I said in no particular order, and that might be true for the rest… but this one is clearly tops on my list. I saw the line so clearly, it was a touchy, delicate putt… and I knew I'd pulled it just that little bit, and my speed was perfect. His ball was fifteen feet from mine, and the putt broke 8'! Might be the greatest putt, given the call I made, I'll ever hit. #13 at Lawsonia Links I cared about a few rounds in Wisconsin on our 2021 trip (thanks again @cipher), and the 13th had gotten me a bit. I was in a bunker, and someone not NOT named @DeadMan had told me I could just chip a 7I out and still be fine… well, the 7I left me 250 in, so my 3W finished just left of the green… and about 10' below the green. I hit a decent pitch to 25' or so… this putt broke only about 2-3', but burying that one was satisfying as it kept my "no sixes in Wisconsin" streak alive. It was after this putt that someone said something like "You remember how you said you felt about Tiger at the 1997 Masters? That's how we feel right about now." It was one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. 😄 #14 at Whispering Woods Two putts are tied here. On one, Sculley and I hit tee shots to a back hole near the front of the green. I was a foot off the front, he was a few feet on. As we were getting back into the cart, I said "putting contest from here." He replied "Well, I lost." I made the 75-footer. The other time, the pin was front-left. I was mostly middle right, barely on the green, putting across it from about 65 feet. The putt broke a good ten feet. Sculley was short left of the hole, and for the last 20 feet of the putt, I looked at @DrizZzY and the face he made — disgust, annoyance, resignation — as the putt tracked directly toward and eventually into the hole was one of the funniest and most satisfying expressions I've ever seen on the golf course. I watched him, not my ball, for the last 15-20 feet of its roll. Sorry Sculley! #9 at Tan Tara Golf Course It was my 77th stroke in my second round of the PAT. It was a ten-footer, broke a few inches, and was destined for the bottom of the cup the instant I hit it, all to pass the PAT on the number in my first attempt. (Tan Tara is now Pendleton Creek.) #17 and 18 at The Old Course, St. Andrews On the 18th, I hit it to about four feet from about 40 yards out, up and over the Valley of Sin, from the fairway. I didn't even really consider chipping or pitching it, because who does that? Not there, not me. On #17, I had about a 15 or 18 footer, after playing a 6I from 180 that flew (on purpose) only about 90 yards, and took about 15 steps to run over humps and hollows before coming to a stop on the right portion of the hole. My caddie said "I see only one or two birdies a year on the Road Hole, so, well done." Lifetime scoring average on 17 at the Old: 3. I'll take that. Far Hole (#?), Putting Course at Streamsong Black @kpaulhus and I were screwing around. Calling out holes, and tee locations. I walked over to the fringe of the nearby green on the Black course… We putted from the fringe in case we scuffed the ground a bit. Well, I chose a putt from the fringe to the far side of the 18-hole putting course. In Google Earth, I measured the putt just now at nearly 400 feet. As in… 130 yards. I hit the stick. My ball stopped less than two feet from the hole. The other diners let out a loud shout when I smacked it, and looked way over at me and yelled out "it hit the stick!" Kyle lost that hole. And most of the other ones. 😉
    • I have one still sitting in a box my son gave me for Christmas.  For a while, I used an app on my watch, but it drained the phone battery . We have Markers at 180 ,135 and 90M , and generally I am close enough to one of them to get a fairly rough indication of how far.  Also, for a while now ,I walk into town and back at weekends, approximately 5 mile round-trip . I’ll start a walk on my watch, and on the way home when the watch ticks over to .10/.90 etc I’ll pick a street light ,lamp post , sign , and guess how far, normally anything up to about 100 m, I have now got very good at estimating distances, especially up to 50 or 60M.

    • Day 19: Lesson first thing this morning. I have a minor setup thing to work on, and then a new priority piece for hips. Really liked the way my hips and legs were working doing drills and slow swings in the lesson.  Got home from work, made dinner for family, and then attempted some practice of the new stuff, but being tired from work and a bit stiff from engaging different muscles in the golf lesson, it was a bit of a struggle so I stopped and will resume tomorrow evening after work.
