I am setting up a new scholarship for a student on the golf team at a university I have connection with. The other scholarships I have funded, I have just name after myself i.e. "the John Doe Scholarship". But for this golf scholarship I thought I would like to give it a fun name, but as I am making a donation large enough to endow the scholarship so it will be around in perpetuity, I want to pick a name that is fun but will stand the test of time. Right now the best I have is “the John Doe Scholarship for sub-par students”. It is clever, but the thing about scholarships is the money is nice, but the money is gone pretty fast however the scholarship stays on your resume for several years out of school – so a name like the sub-par scholarship might not be all the clever out of context. Anyhow I am open to suggestions so fun golf name.

Anything at all except something with your own name in it.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I like the term sub-par in this context, but maybe specify it's for sub-par golfers in the title? That will at least give them a chance to explain it, if necessary, although many people who don't play golf recognize the use of par in this context.

The "Putt for dough" John Doe scholarship or the John Doe "putt for dough" scholarship.

Or the long form: The "Drive for show, putt for dough" John Doe Scholarship.

Obviously works better if your name really was John Doe

Then it could be: The John Doe "Putt for Doe" scholarship.

Maybe you could change you name?

Otherwise it still works with your real name. Essentially the scholarship winner would be Putting for the dough, and chipping for the dough, etc...

Man, has someone told you you have a very common name?

"The John Doe scholarship for outstanding improvement in golf". Self explanatory...

If your son or daughter played golf for the school, perhaps you would name the scholarship after your son or daughter.

I just got an ideal, find someone who will match your scholarship funds and let them name the scholarship. You can even try some professional tour players who live nearby or was born in the state you live in.

Well he already stated that he must have his name in it. Quite frankly what you are doing is an awesome thing.

I vote for "John Doe's Golf Scholarship" .There is nothing wrong with leaving it as is.

Nice Idea, my one daughter plays golf - but she is only 4 - so it not time yet to name a scholarship after her.

But my grandfather was big time golfer - sadly he died before we could ever be golfing buddies - somthing in his honour might be an option.

I was kind of criptic about why my name had to be on it, in short I am on the Board at the University and part of my volunteer position is to encourage people to donate to the school, it easier to do this if support the school myself in a public way. I currently have funded two other scholarships and both of them have standard names, so I want this one to be a bit more fun.

So is it for a kid to get a scholarship to play golf at college?

Or is it money for a kid who played golf in high school to help him/her go to college?

Both I guess, it is for a kid comming out of High School who wants to play on the golf team. We are not talking Div 1 here or anything so these are kids who want to go to school but happen to play golf - right now there is no other golf scholarships of any kind at this school. I am told a 10 capper could make the team, so we aren't talking about kids that are playing golf for anything but fun. We are also not talking big money, basically enough to cover about half their tution for one year.

How about "The Sink or Swim Putt" That way it pretty much explains itself. The ball being placed on a downward slope Where the hole might be a couple yds from a hanging. Make it to where you can not hit the ball short of the hole, but has to remain either on the green or no brainer in the hole. If more then one cups it then move the ball further back.

    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
