we've all been paired up with random ppl and we all play with friends from time to time... anybody have any good stories about your playing partners?...

i played with an old guy the other day who had been playing golf his whole life... and wasnt a bad ballstriker for someone who could barely walk...
he poked a good drive splitting the fw and reached the 150 stick on the first hole... it was like a 170yrd drive... he then hit his 3w... the ball went straight as an arrow hitting about 5yrds in front of the green rolling onto the green and since its an elevated green we lost sight of the ball... i hit my shot up and we both got onto the green but i only saw my ball... he walks towards my ball thinking he was going to putt it... i told him 'i think thats my ball but i dont see your ball anywhere'... we looked behind the green and no ball...
he says screw it an drops a ball on the green... lol... he goes to pull the flag an out pops his ball...

old guy got an eagle... very cool

It has always been funny to me that they always seem to pair the WORST golfers in the world with low handicappers. That is just probably just because there are more highs than lows.

I ALWAYS keep my mouth shut and am as polite as I can be and that actually paid off TWO weekends in a row. I live in Louisville, KY and the two nicest courses around are:

1. Valhalla
2. Persimmon Ridge

I was paired with members from each on two seperate occasions and because they enjoyed my company so much I have open invites to BOTH, anytime.......WHO SAYS NICE GUYS FINISH LAST!!!!!!!

flop, that would have been nice to see. Another Sand Trap'er had a simliar story about an eagle 2. I think mine would be on the thread I started about "Craziest shots" or something like that. (I'll try to add the link later)

Long story short, my partner pulled a tee shot left on dogleg right #13. Couldnt find it. Assumed it went in the water between #13 and par 3 14th. Dropped a ball at the water relief point and played on. Got to #14 green and his tee ball from the 13th was in the cup at the 14th

I sometimes feel bad because usually my BF and I will play together and we usually get paired up with a single or another couple and I'm usually THE worst player in our group and I just feel bad :( But they keep pairing us up though. We've found some really cool people to play with because we're always paired up with different people.

On a lunch outing with a co-worker whom I never knew played. Turns out they are mbidextrous and he switched his stance back and forth as the day went on. Was really cool!

Couldn't put for sh&* though. HAHAHHA

I sometimes play single or with my gf so I pretty much get paired up every time I play. Everybody I've been paired up with has been cool and fun to play with except one guy. I was playing with my brother and we got paired up with a guy who was of early retirement age. It started off cordially enough. We're terrible golfers and we cheerfully said so - assuring the guy that we might not play well but we know how to keep pace of play and are just out to learn/have fun.

It turns out that he is even worse than us and NOT cheefull about it. By the 3rd hole his constant cussing and bizarre excuse making was starting to throw me off so, sure enough, out come the shanks. The guy starts cracking on me! Keep in mind, even with the shanks I was still no worse than him. I didn't crack back on him but I'm sure he could tell I was annoyed.

The next few holes were pretty wierd - nobody was really talking much. At around hole 6 we started chatting again and had an enjoyable 7, 8 and 9th holes. We told him we were taking a break at the turn, though, and played the back nine without him. It seemed strange to me that somebody would want to play golf when he clearly didn't enjoy himself . . . but that's fine . .as long as he doesn't play with me!

My regular playing partner is a close friend of mine - he actually got me into golf about 5 years ago. He carries a 1.1 index. He never practices, usually runs to the first tee with untied shoes, and just plays super steady golf. His approach shots are deadly. When he takes a week off for a golf vacation where he plays once or twice a day for a week, he ends up shooting under par for most of the rounds as he gets in a groove. I think this guy should have poured himself into the game to see what he could do (he's 52 now). Still, he's happy to golf and is a great guy to play with. He never gives advice unless you ask, and when he does it's very quick and to the point.

Got paired up with a couple guys at a local course. One of the guys was a VERY good player. Long off the tee, could hit greens with his 3w 250 yards away. Solid iron play, excellent putter. He was about 20 strokes ahead of me at the end of the round (I was about a 25 handicap at the time). I couldn't stand playing with him by hole 6. I have never heard so much cussing on a golf course before. He was distracting me, my friend, OTHER people on the course, etc. At one point he yelled out SH*T 10+ times in a row at a very loud volume and was clearly making a scene. His partner whined the whole game. They were gambling against each other, and the other guy was just whining about every other shot he took. My goodness, these guys were easily 20 years older than my friend and I, but played like the two biggest babies. Ugh.

My friend and I had a good time mocking them under our breath though. Was probably the only thing that kept their horrible attitude out of our heads.

I usually end up liking most of the people I play with, however my best pairing (most hilarious too) was earlier this year when I started playing again. I got paired with an older guy with about 2 grand worth of callaway clubs in his bag, and a guy about my age (he was 28) with some nice Titleist clubs. They both played to about a 6-8. They were going back and forth all day, and just smack talking the crap out of eachother, and they had never met before until the first tee when we all showed up as singles. I didn't play very well that day, but still had about the most fun i've ever had golfing watching these guys go back and forth. The older dude was pulling from a pretty big flask most of the day too.

My stepfather and myself went to play a course in Ruidoso, NM and got paired up with an older gentleman and his wife.

Now, both my stepfather and me can wail a drive pretty good so we figured we'd play the tees that were about 7000.

The guy, who was around 62 or so, retired and just travelling the country with his wife playing a bunch of golf, asked us what tees we were hitting from and we said "blues". Well, he says "OK, I'll back up to make it easier".

Well, after he said that, we instantly felt bad for him backing up to our tees when we could have easily moved up to his and it would have been no big deal.

First drive...bam! down the middle about 250ish. Iron shot...bam...to the green. 2 putts and we're on to the next hole.

My SF and me get to a hole on the front nine and it is a severe dogleg left. Fairway ends at about 200 yards if you hit straight. We both step up with 5 irons and put it at the turn. Guy steps up with a driver and my stepfather says:

"You realize it is only about 200 to the end of the fairway right".

"Yeah, I'm going to draw it around the trees." Bam...easy as pie.

Guy ends up shooting a 73 and spanked our butts. I think I shot 91 and SF shot around 79 or 80.

Needless to say, we cracked up after the round at having misjudged the guy so bad. Genuinely nice guy who had some serious game. Said he used to compete in the state amateurs when he was younger all the time and won one of them.

My last round was on Monday (first round in way too dang long).

One of the guys in our foursome was really striking the ball nicely. He hit some monster drives and really stuck it tight on the greens.

When I say he was pounding it...I'm not kidding. I'm 41 and feeling the effects of bad knees and the other minor aches and stuff. This kid was in his mid 20's and fearless. I grew tired of watching him blow past us off the tee all day. We reached the 16th hole....a straightaway par 5 with very limited trouble off the tee. The rough is low and flanking area is slowed on both sides to funnel shots back to the fairway. He was talking smack on the tee box about how far he was gonna bust it. He did kill it. I decided to go after one as the risk was minimal. I relaxed and set up for a wider arc and really let all the tension out of my body. I pouned one up a few yards behind his. He was impressed.....I was sorta shocked.

I hit a low screamer 5 iron second shot that went through the green to the back edge. This kid hit either and 8 or 9 iron second shot and stuck it less than a foot from the stick....gimmie eagle. He's a bad little joker.

His weakness.....he couldn't putt to save his life. Zero birdies and so many missed short putts. He struggled with the flatstick really bad. The greens were a tad slow but were rolling very true and smooth. I certainly didn't have the best round putting...but I made him look bad with the wand.

Don't feel too sorry for the fella.....he carded a nice little 78 on a course he didn't know very well. I can't imagine what he'd do on his home course when he was putting to his satisfaction.....it'd be well below par.

He'd certainly be a huge factor in a captain's choice formatted tournament.

i got paired up with a real winner once...
apparently this guy everyone knew but me and they all hung back an ran to the putting green after seeing this guy wait to squeeze into a group... i was a single and another guy behind me was a single so the starter paired the 3 of us together...
this guy was a jackhole... he was about id say early 60's...
the other guy we played with was probably mid 20's...
i think this guy has never heard of ready golf... he rode with the other guy and they were buddying it up... got up to our balls and they stood by their cart and the old guy was telling a story or some crap... i stepped up to my ball while he was bs'ing and took a couple of practice swings... the guy yells over to me an says 'young man... do you believe youre away?' ... i played it cool and said i was just taking practice swings...
he shanks his shot... the other guy hits one on the green and im closest to the hole...
i go up to mark my ball to get it out of the way of the old guy... and he yells "can i chip my ball up please!"
uggggh... imagine a whole round of this!

my fave part of the day is when this jackhole asked me "son... are you from america?"
"ionno old man... if you consider hawaii as part of america"

I play best ball games for money often.

I am 28. My playing partner is 50+ but also about a 1-2 hcp. Best putter I have ever seen, and cockiest bastard on the western hemisphere.

The day before yesterday, we were playing for the equivalent of about 400US$ a head, and it was clear I had bogey at best on my hands. He was lying for par on the green about 45 feet away.

He looks at me and says "Don't worry about it partner, this is in."

It was a winding, breaking putt. Grade of difficulty about 8/10.

He hits the putt.

As the put has rolled about a third of the way there, he turns away from the ball and props his ear towards the hole while looking away from it, as to say I just want to hear the sound of it go in.

The ball went straight in.

It was one of the best/funniest moments I've had on the golf course.

Needless to say, our opponents were devastated by such a display and we won the match like 6 up.
