a 3hybrid is usually right around where a 5 wood is at.

A 5-wood is usually anywhere between 18 and 21 degrees. I think the best club to replace it is a 3-hybrid (I would choose 19* if they offer it). Keep in mind that hybrids have a slightly shorter shaft and usually land softer than woods. If you can demo a hybrid first I would recommend doing so.

most 19* hybrids are 2-iron hybrids a 2i hybrid is about 4-5 yards shorter than a 5 wood

Not TaylorMade, one of the most popular (and the one i was thinking of). Their 3-hybrid is 19 deg

Interesting. I have an Titleist 909h 19 degree 'strong' 3 hybrid, and a 909 D3 5-wood that is 18 degrees. I'm at least 10-15 yards longer with the 5-wood. Could this be attributed to shaft length increasing clubhead speed?

Above poster; yes. The shaft length is what is giving you the extra distance. Hybrid shafts also tend to be heavier too.

To replace a 5wood I would go with 19 or 20. Don't worry about what # hybrid its called, unimportant issue. I had a cft ti 19* that I used to carry instead of a 5 wood, was a 230-240 club. Actually the club I holed out from 235 for a dbl eagle. (Was going to bronze it, but just sold it on ebay)

I have a buddy who has a 19 degree hybrid with a 5 wood shaft and he murders the ball with it.

All mfg's do this, not just TM. It's how they can tell you that their club X, hits further than the competitors club X. Lofts are set. 21 degrees is 21 degrees no matter who's club it is. This will never change.

My Adams boxer Tech A4r 3h is 19 degrees. I consider it to be my 2 iron and use it in place of my 5 wood when off the fairway so I use the club a lot.

In my  bag:

Driver, Callaway Diablo Edge Tour 9.5 stiff

3, 5 woods: Callaway Diablo Edge Tour 15,18 degrees Stiff

2 hybrid: Callaway Diable Edge Tour 18 degrees R (out when the 5 wood is in)

3,6 hybrids: Callaway Diablo Edge 21 S and 30 degrees R

4,5 hybrids: Callaway Razr X HL 24 and 27 degrees Stiff

7-AW irons: Callaway Razr HL graphite R shafts

SW 54 Callaway X Series Jaws CC Slate Fujikura Graphite Stiff

Putter: Odessey White Ice 1 Blade Putter.

Ball...looking for any ball that hates water, sand, long grass, and getting lost in the woods.

I can't find any, so forced to use ones that seem to love all the above.

I have 20* degree hybrid that I put in the bag it doesn't carry quite as far as a 5 wood but it holds greens much better.

Remember that a 5W usually has a longer shaft than a comparable H. So, it may be difficult to get an exact replacement, because the 5W's longer shaft helps the ball go farther. Shorter-shafted Hs offer more control, but someone who can control a 5W gets more distance in part from the longer shaft. A person who can't control a 5W may get more reliable distance from a hybrid because of more center hits.

Here's a sampling of what TaylorMade and Callaway offer:

Model Club Loft

Shaft

Length

TM R11 5W 19* 42.75"
TM RBZ 5W 19* 43"
TM Hybrid Tour 2 16.5* 41.5"
TM Hybrid 3H 19* 41"
Razr X Black 5W 19* 42"
Razr X Tour Hybrid 2H.T 18* 40.75"
Razr X Hybrid 3H 21* 40.25"

Several months ago, I went to a demo day. Both the Callaway and Adams reps were cautious about the 2H: Unless a golfer has really good clubhead speed, they warned me individually, the lower loft might make it difficult to get the ball out of the rough.

Also: Tour or pro head hybrids in R flex might be useful to average golfers to lessen hooking. The offset in regular hybrid heads sometimes encourages hooking.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Ping say:

Their 17 degree hybrid is equivalent to 2 iron and 5 wood.

Their 20 degree hybrid is equivalent to 3 iron and 7 wood.

Their 23 degree hybrid is equivalent to 4 iron and 9 wood.

They've matched hybrids with irons of the same loft, but surely the hybrid will go a little further with its longer shaft and weightier head?  The hybrid-wood match up strikes me as reasonable since the equivalent fairway has a higher/weaker loft which i guess would offset the effect of its longer shaft relative to the hybrid.

    • ..maybe 1 shot HC change might be a good starting point..
    • Yeah, I have a similar view. I was in the team of 2 and we got down 5 after 5. Get 1 pt if win the hole - whatever that game is called. We lost it 3 down with 2 to play so almost saved it. After the first hole when the single did a putt, then dropped a second ball, made a slight adjustment and sunk it, we thought it wasn't right. We couldn't do anything with handicaps etc so we just made them wait between putts - usually just one of us to putt. We were a 23 and 25 handicappers (probably playing to about 28) and the single was a 16 handicapper, but somehow had a HC of 20 (so that is 1 HC pt already). In terms of making it fair, and changing HC (HC1 + HC2 / 4), I think maybe adding 2 HCs to the double (or taking 2 HC off the single (after the adding and div by 4) might make it fair. Also maybe making a rule that the single couldn't change clubs for the second hit. Hard to say from that one game but possibly: - 2 shot HC adding - can't change clubs for second shot - need to have other team putt in between their 2 putts   Not sure. Do you think you'd still win or have these rules made it unfair the other way? Cheers for thoughts..
    • In that case I double down on my comments - I'll take the single guy and I know if I'm in that match against two similar players I'm pretty confident that I'm the favorite.
    • Cheers gbogey. The single player can hit 2 balls every shot and take the best ball, and then hit 2 balls from that spot, so your second scenario...
