Teen Clubs?

My son will soon be 12 years old, and has been playing a junior set of Ping Moxie clubs. I have started looking around a little for his next set. It seems that most of the major manufacturers make junior sets only up to 12 years old. I realize that age is only a guideline, but even using the club length, there is a big gap between these sets and regular men's clubs. What do most 13-16 year olds play? I can't imagine my son going from a 34.5 inch 5 iron up to a 37.75 inch 5 iron--that's just too big a jump.

I'm not really sure what there is available for that age range, but I'd guess by 15 or 16, a full-sized set would be appropriate. As far as 12-14 goes, if all else fails, you could buy a regular set with very soft shafts, and have them cut down an inch or two. Of course having them shortened will make the shaft play stiffer, that's why I say go with the softest flex you can find, but they will be lighter as well, and he'll be able to get the club around faster.

Women's clubs?

I don't really know i was a big 12 year old, i used regular men's clubs.

I got my 11 yr a set of Walter Hagans. He is a big into baseball and has a pretty strong swing. They are pretty solid clubs. i would guess they will last him till about 14 or so when i assume he will go into a mens club. I have hit them a couple times and liked them.

Consider component clubs. Select the right heads, and the clubsmith can pick shafts for your son and trim them to proper length and flex.

I also would get him a 5 iron (Moxie has 7i as its longest actual iron).

This would suit him until he gets a little bigger. If he watched or took part in the building of the set, this would also give him a good physics lesson on how golf clubs work, and how to choose the right type of set for the future.

He actually has the Moxie set from a year or two ago, which includes 5i, 7i, 9i, and SW. No hybrid though, so we're looking for a good kid's hybrid.

If you don't mind me asking (I tried to send you a PM), how tall is your son, and how long has he been playing men's clubs? I am trying to get an idea of the minimum height required to play men's clubs. I was thinking at least 5'6" or so.

I suffered this same problem a couple years ago and I agree, get him a set of older clubs with very weak flex that will be relatively cheaper than a newer set and in 2-3 years hand yours down to him. I went with a cheap set with 'light flex' of callaway x-12s (yes the original x-series) and now I am about to step up into TM r7s but for his driver I would use a regular shaft because he will swing harder and let him if you choose.

Also known as Womens clubs. They work pretty well as long as their not pink or lime green.

They have light, flexible shafts, and they can be found cheap. They other options are the aforementioned US Kids (which i always found WAY to light and whippy) or have him fitted for mens clubs, which could get pretty costly because the shafts would need to be cut down, or he'd need custom ones.

I just recently turned 15 and i use a full mens set. I started plying when i was around 12-13 and i used a normal womens set which was fine for about a year until the shaft was to whippy. Length wasnt really a problem because i gripped down anyway. Hope this helps

As as hybrid, I would go to golfsmith and build your own hybrid using Golf Smith's brand called Snake Eyes. You can custom your own shaft on it and the price ends up very reasonable around 50 bucks.

Also, you could look at Texan Hybrids on Amazon which run under 15 bucks a piece and i play two of them and I love em... Good Luck

I'm 15 now and I use Men's clubs but i went from juniors to womens to mens. The smaller jumps made it much easier.

I ordered my 11 YO son a set from Giga Golf, 1" shorter, A flex, and JR grips. Less than $150. Should fit him for the next 2-3 years.

Im changing my vote to the walter hagens... there almost full mens clubs but seem to be cut down about an inch and half

womens clubs are perfect for 12 and 13 year olds. I used them when i was that age. i am 16 now and am on my second set of mens clubs.

I actually used U.S Kids clubs up until I was 12, then cut down womens clubs for a while until I was 14 and actually got serious about the game. At about that time I hit puberty and been playing my Nike Slingshot OSS's for almost 2 years (I'm 15 now).
