Its winter here. So I cant go play on the course. What I am wondering is does anyone use this as a practice tool? or do you think the game is too unrealistic?

I have the TW 2010 Wii game along with the Wii Motion Plus attachment. I tried out the game using my regular swing to see how well it would match up to my swing in real life. I found a few problems using it for practice.

1) It's difficult to grab the Wii Mote like you would your real club. There is also no weight felt in your fingers like with a real club.
2) It's hard to tell where the impact point is, as where you would hit the ball. I can't tell if it's center of my stance or the ball is forward.
3) I don't know if the game accounts for the lie of different clubs. It's tough to gauge if you are holding the Wii Mote at the correct angle for a 5 iron compared to a 3 wood.
4) Lacking in short-game mechanics - no way to simulate a correct bunker stroke, chip shot mechanics seem incorrect, putting doesn't feel real at all.

There's another Wii title in the works by another company called David Leadbetter's My Golf Trainer, that uses both the Wii Motion Plus _and_ the Wii Fit board to track weight shift in the swing. I don't know when the game will be released, but I hope that proves to be a title better suited for indoor golf practice. I'm still skeptical and will have to see a few positive (and unbiased) reviews from people who are skilled golfers before I make the purchase.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

Hi there,
The Leadbetter game was supposed to come out in November, just in time for christmas. Now they're saying August this year... reslly curious sbout that one.

I have TW 10 and don't think it will help at all with swing mechanics. But it does for strategy if you create a realistic "me" character. I played the Pebble Beach course as Tiger and easily shot par. Using my abilities, there were some holes I had great difficulties with. I had to play the hole with a completely different mind set. Creating your own home courses would make it a lot more useful too.

Not really, its too easy to just swing every club like a PW.

Hi there,

I'm going to boldly predict that this too will be pretty worthless for any meaningful golf practice.

In my opinion, unless you are swinging a real club, it's not even close. Even then, I don't like hitting into nets, domes, off mats, or otherwise... so I doubt any video game would ever meet my expectations. Maybe if you buy the game and they magically have little elves that grow grass in my living room, install a trackman and have me hit shots into a giant super realistic looking screen whil using trackman to produce my shots... and even then, putting and short game aren't simulated.

Yea if you are a pretty good Golfer you can find alot of flaws in that game as you compare it to the way you know you hit the ball. I hit the ball straight and when i dont my miss drives are a big hook left. (im right handed). My Iron miss hits are a slight draw 5-10 yards left of the green. Somehow in this game i got a slice right like nobodys business. I tried to fool around with my swing on that game so i sould hit a draw and a straight shot on the video game and ended up screwing up my real swing. That was the last time i played Tiger Woods Golf. I have heard that the Leadbetter game is really good and worth taking a look at. I read it on the internet tho so you never know.

I'm going to give you a little advice. There's a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

I played it quite a bit last winter and spring (TW '09) and found it really helped with the mental game. Seriously. Regarding the swing, you can swing as lazy or as mechanically sound as you want, the wiimote will give you a 109% drive on a variety of actual swings. Basically, you get out of it what you put into it. Take it seriously and it can fire you up for the summer.

This year TW '09 has seen less action (maybe twice), because I'm playing in an indoor golf league. When I fire up the Wii (doing it right now) it's either Grand Slam Tennis or We Snowboard.

Agree 100 percent- if you stand on the Wii balance board, it puts your feet way too close together for anything more than a short iron or wedge distance. I'm short (5' 7"), and it is still way too narrow too accomodate my driving stance (little more than shoulder width).

I also agree that holding the controller for Tiger's game is unnatural feeling, and could actually do more harm to your swing mechanics than good, IMO.

Note: I don't own a wii, but I've lately entertained the notion of buying one. I'm going by what I play at friends' places.

The golf games - especially Wii golf - don't do much for me as far as practice goes. They're fun, and they're golf video games, but they aren't remotely anything preparing for the real thing.

The wedge shots on Wii fit seem great. I've used this twice at a friend's place, and I think I hit my wedges slightly better since. Of course, this is probably entirely in my head.

Yea i am thinking how how it could be used as a beneficial tool. The only way i really came up with is by making your normal swing with your actual golf club and swinging it then grabbing the wii remote and making the same swing and seeing if the head is in the right place and see if your hand and wrist are in the right place.

I play 10 a lot and have played TW on many other versions and platforms. For me the only real value is in seeing the shots play out. To see the roll out and bounces. It helps me visualize shots on the course and helps with my mental tempo. I also play shots other people my skill level do not play. I play flops and blasts etc and usually do just fine. Friends have told me it makes no since that I have so many "shots" in my bag with such a high handicap but i think it has to do with playing so much TW. As for swing mechanics it sucks. I think we who spend money on golf would gladdly pay twice as much for better graphics and a more realistic experience.

    • Idk but I would have to imagine that a putter that is aimed where you think it's aimed would be the most important aspect of a putter

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.
