Wood Lie Angles

I notice that almost no one makes woods and hybrids to anything but standard lie angles. Mizuno has made some hybrids which can be adjusted for lie, but that's all I've ever seen.

Trouble is, I'm 3° upright, and most modern woods have a flat sole. This spells trouble. I have resorted to pulling out old persimmon and late 90s steel fairway woods. These are much more reliable, even though they are tiny in comparison, they seem about ten times easier to hit. But they still go right on me, albeit not as much as an improperly fitted wedge (those must go 5-10° right!). Golf companies sell a hundred different models of woods, and they release a new one every few months, but they seem to forget that not everyone fits their "average" size. Not even custom component companies seem to make their woods in differing lie angles!

Does anyone make woods in different lie angles?

I have the same issues. I am a maroon dot Ping, which is 4.5* upright. Now in time my swing has flattened a good bit and they should be adjusted to probably around 2*. Anyway, back to your post. I think the Bobby Jones clubs have a rounded sole for the reason you describe. I am looking to add a 3W, and a 3 and 4 hybrid to my new bag I'm making up. I have really considered them for that reason (easier to hit on a steeper swing plane). Just a thought, I haven't heard any negatives on the clubs. As for the lie angles, I haven't compared them to standard. I've just been comparing different clubs to my Pings which are a degree or two different from standard on the hybrids.

I noticed the Bobby Jones clubs had a rounded sole as well. The TM Raylor also has a nice rounded sole. I think in the ping dot system I'm silver, I've hit silver dots and they were just perfect.

Due to the design of bulge and roll in wood faces the lie angle has little effect on shot dispersion. You may need more bulge to increase the "gear effect" that causes side spin thus bringing your ball back in line.

My problem is mostly the toe dragging on the turf. Most newer woods are flat bottomed, so the margin for error is not so great. I had my swing measured again today, and it turns out I'm only about 1-2° upright, my last set of clubs were just flat. That makes me feel a lot better.

I have had troubles getting clubs that fit being a 3.5 to 4 flat player especially woods and drivers.

I will say that i finally found some. Thomas was one company that claimed to and told me they bent my hybrids flat, but they did not. Wishon golf clubs however, are bendable! the 929hs woods can be bent 4 degrees upright or flat the hybrid 775hs can also be bent that much. If you need upright or flat hybrids and woods wishon is the way to go. They also have some bendable drivers! I have a 3 and 5 wood 4 degrees flat and a 4H at 3.5 flat. Those of you that struggle to find drivers,woods,and hybrids that need to be different from standard, there is finally an answer!!!

A couple of things you might try. Caution: I don't know if they'll work.

Look at the GolfWorks component heads. The Tricept B3 FWs had sole bars that allowed adjustment of the face angle. (Last appeared in 2012 catalog). http://www.golfworks.com/

If you can find an OEM "tour van" at a local golf expo, see if they can make you a FW that's upright.

One of the advantages of the old persimmon headed woods was that a clubsmith could make you one 3* flat or upright just by how they planed the clubhead.

Funny that now, just a few years later, most OEM woods have fully adjustable lie angles.
