Funny, they advertise how much farther their burner iron goes compared to their competitors. This is why I would never buy a TaylorMade club. Irons are not made to hit the ball far, they're made to gap distances, and anyone stupid enough to buy into an iron that hits the ball farther is probably also the reason companies like Amway stay in business.

So, let's look at their "amazing" 6 iron compared to the other competitors. TM's 6 iron hits it 172.9 yards... Wow... Amazing. Now lets look at a few other clubs: AP2 - 162 G10 - 164 VR Cavity - 165 AP2 - 31°, 37.5" G10 - 30.5°, 37.25" VR Cavity - 30°, 37.5" The Burner 6 iron is 27°, and 37.625" That's 3° stronger than any other club on the market... That's equal to a 5 iron in any other brand. Any more questions as to why it hits the ball farther? It's stronger! It's longer! Brilliant! Now, why people fall for this bulls%&t; , I'll never know.

Funny stuff. Sad, but true. Maybe next year they can invent a 6iron that goes as far as a normal 4 iron. Then they will really be on to something.

A poster earlier this week had a 5-iron that was 23°... Can't remember which forum.

History on this: Early cavity backs with perimeter weighting popped the ball up higher than musclebacks, and lost a little distance. Ping guys made lofts a degree or two stronger to keep distances same. Then, marketing guys decided to make lofts even stronger so that they trumpet, for example, a six iron that...

Of course, classic story. All GI style clubs are a bit stronger than blades. I don't see a problem with this. The problem is, they start to make these insane claims, like "we engineered eight individual irons..." No, you delofted them. All they did was make a set where the longer irons were made even stronger. In a game where most people can't even hit their long irons, they made them

longe r, and stronger , and delofted the whole set to begin with. The pitching wedge is 45°! That's insane. They need to make a standard loft for clubs, or print the lofts on each club. My old Tommy Armours had the lofts printed on ever y club. Heck, your drivers and wedges all have lofts printed on them, as do most of your FW woods, and some of your hybrids, why not your irons? I would like to see a standard loft of 50° pitching wedges for blades, and 48° for cavities. 4° increments, and all delofted clubs have a label that says X iron +2°, etc. So, the Burners would be called PW + 2°, 9 Iron + 2°, etc. I actually go out of my way to buy weaker lofted clubs. I had some modern GI irons, and I hit the pitching wedge 140 yards. How the hell can you really gap distances when you have a 30 yard gap from pitching wedge to sand wedge? If we had 50° PWs, the standard professional sand wedge would be just 4° less. The standard amateur sand wedge would be 6° less. The TM Burner has an incredible 11° gap from the PW to the standard SW. They don't make 3 irons anymore, because the 4 iron is now the 3 iron, which was then the same as an old 2 iron, which was the same as the old 1 iron. What's next? Will our grandkids have a 46 iron - XXAGPW? Just cut the problem off at the head, and refuse to buy delofted clubs. Information is the best way to fight this constant delofting. Spread the word.

They did this last year for people to demo their new burner irons also. It's also the closest I'll get to owning a set of their irons. It felt terrible.

Yeesh, I'm starting to plan my next set, and I'm planning to work around a 32° 6-iron...

Now, why people fall for this

A friend of mine, otherwise very intelligent, is completely taken in by this. He has Taylormade something or another irons, and comments that I - who, in fairness, could use some distance gains - would hit the ball farther if I had his irons instead of mine.

Yes. I'm starting to collect 6-irons, actually. Other than my SGI starter set, though, all the 6-irons are Mizunos.

I'm still waiting for my 27° pitching wedge. It's part of my plan to switch to a 8 or 9 wedge bag. Putter, driver, 3-Wood, 5-Wood, 3-Hybrid, 4-hybrid, "Pitching Wedge" ... and so on.

The pitching wedge is 45°! That's insane.

Didn't Wilson have a set a few years ago that was 42.5° PW? I know Cobra had a 43 in the UFIs.

If they told me it would carry further than my driver and were willing to just give me one for free I'd take it. Lol, obviously that wouldn't be true, but I sure wouldn't turn down a free golf club. Although these are very good points to point out in a few of the former posts.

I registered myself just now, free stuff is always good. Id be willing to give it a try. I dont see me running out to buy new irons or anything but a 6 iron is a pretty important club that will get used a lot on par 3's and long par 4's especially as I dont hit the ball terribly far, id be curious to see if their claims are true, even if it is just by delofting. If they send me one, I'll use it.

Lots of people are wondering how

MacGregor could make a comback: * How about MT Classics irons, with 52° PW, 56° SW, and no need for a GW . 9i is 48° ... down to 24° 3i. Hybrids could still pick up for 4i and 3i for lots of golfers. My brother has a bubble-shafter TM Burner driver from about year 2000. I told him to hang onto it, because the hot TM driver for 2012 could well be a 44" club with a 380 cc. head. Will be interesting to see how soon we go "back to the future," on irons and other clubs.

I'm not holding my breath. The new Burner driver is 46.5", totally insane. I asked the clubfitter about having my Adams cut down from 45" to 44", and he told me I'd lose 20 yards, and might even want to consider going longer. Crazy. Who can control a 46", or heck, a 45" driver? I already miss the center of the clubface more than I'd like. The tour pros use 44" drivers. They know they can't control a 46" driver, and they're right. Phil Mickelson uses a 46" driver, and why did he lose the U.S. Open? Anyone?

The fact of the matter is, hitting the center of the face is the most important aspect, and if I can't hit the center of the face more than 2 out of 5 times, my driver is useless.

Where do you see these requirements? I already entered, so I can't change it, but I fit for 4 of their 5 criteria. Oh well, if I miss it, I miss it. Maybe they figured they can't convert Mizuno players

Shindig,
He is being cynical (taylor Made doesn'tactually spell it out in that way.) Basically he is implying that TaylorMade will use the questionaire to send the freebie to the people who fit the marketing profile for someone more apt to shell out the money. The only question they forgot to ask, was what is your household income? (That's my attempt at cynicism).
