if its a 3some holding you up and youre by yourself, you can ask if you can join them, if youre squeamish about asking to play thru. theyll prolly offer to let you play thru.

I think his point is that they both paid equally to enjoy the golf course so neither of them have "superior" rights to the course over the other one, and hence should not imped each other. But they are impeding his ability to use the course in a way that standard golf etiquette indicates should be addressed, so he feels somewhat slighted.

Actually the threesome probably had "superior" rights. Like I said, most courses do not recognize the right of a single or a twosome to play through... I have found this rule in place from goat track munis to top end resort courses. Of course I have no idea what the policy is in Ireland, i think you have to offer the threesome a pint of Guiness or something.

haha probably.

Heard that rule before but nobody really enforces it. The course was quiet so stopping for 30 seconds to let me tee off wouldn't have hurt.

There once was a man named Black
Liked to play fast that’s a fact
He ran into some slow play
It really ruined his day
And now once again he’s a hack

Sorry I couldnt resist,,,given your home town and all.

I missed where you'd said that earlier. That's an interesting point, and it does seem to make intuitive sense.

It would depend on the course rules, then, because the rules dictate what you pay for, and "getting what you pay for" was the original point that I was replying to. If the golf course discourages or prohibits singles from playing through, then when you pay to play as a single you do so taking the risk that you'll be held up by others.
Of course I have no idea what the policy is in Ireland, i think you have to offer the threesome a pint of Guiness or something.

Har. Smuggle some onto the course, not for consumption, but play-through bribes.

perhaps they didn't know you were there? if i'm playing quickly and there's a slow group in front, i politely let it be known within two holes. if they don't want to let me through, i pass them up, provided there's no one in front of them. last round this happened to me i was playing behind a threesome, one teacher and two beginners. they were hitting the ball ever which way but straight. they didn't wave me through after three holes. i generally play twilight, so that means i've got 4 hours til dark. i'll be damned if i'm going to get stuck on hole 13 because people don't know or care to wave me through. call it what you want, but i have limited golf funds, and when i pay to play 18, that's what i intend to play.

The USGA recently changed the rule of what is considered a "group" w/ rights. They now say that a single person shall be considered a "group" and have the same rights as any other sized group.

When I see that a course says that it recognizes USGA rules as their adopted set of rules, I keep that new ruling in mind if I'm by myself.

Because I will, on occasion, come across SOME groups who will flat out pretend I'm not even there. It's such a deflating feeling to come across people like that because I know I'll either have to say something or skip ahead of them because 90% of the time, they won't let me through, ever. You just get a feeling of what they're thinking and what they will or won't let you do. So, I'm ultimately forced into taking some kind of action because I WILL NOT sit and wait around on a group ahead of me if I'm alone. Like I said, by rule, I'm a group, and using regular golf etiquette, you let me through. If you don't, then I'm doing something about it. It's that simple.

Come on guys, I'm not going to go away and as you can see by my pace, I'm not going to hold you up for more than a couple of minutes. Why not sit at the next tee, chat amongst yourselves, and wait for me?

I ask the group if I may join them. If they have noticed you as you caught them then they know how well you play and either say sure if there are people holding them up or say go ahead, usually the latter. So in the future, ask to join and see what happens.

Nike: I'll ask them if I can play through next time this happens.

FHopper: Wouldn't want too be intruding in their group though, normally I wait to see if they'd ask me if I'd join.
