Is Phil Mickelson going to keep a 64° wedge in his bag this year with the new grooves?

I know he had some comments earlier this year saying the new grooves don't catch consistently at a loft above 61 degrees or so (part of his explanation for using the Ping Eye 2 as his 64° wedge), so I am curious whether or not he is going to keep a 64° wedge in the bag now that the Eye 2s have finally been banned and the dust has settled, so to speak.

Anyone know?

I was thinking the same thing. Notice, he had 2 drivers this week, so I imagine that he took out his 64° to fit one in. The 64 with the new grooves will be OK from the fairway, but from the rough? Useless.

And considering he spends 90% of his time in the rough, it would make sense to ditch it.Seriously, 2 drivers. He needs to learn how to hit

one first.Tries to murder every ball 320 yards. If he held back a little he'd hit a lot more fairways.
A great shot is when you go for it and pull it off. A smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it. ~ Phil Mickelson.

His problem is that he thinks he can hit these monster drivers. Seriously, he carries a 46", 7.5° driver. Who on this earth can hit such a thing at all consistently? Phil could never be criticized for not being creative in his approach, but by golly, sometimes the old ways are best. He needs to stick to a 44.5", 9.5° driver like any other mortal.

Phil needs to put himself in position to score, and spraying the ball all over creation from the tee ain't the way to do it. I've always been a fan of his, but more and more I have to question the short part of his game... meaning that 5 inches between his ears.

He scored pretty darn well for being last in driving accuracy. If he wins the masters being aggressive like he is right now what are we going to say? I have a hard time questioning a 37 time PGA tour winner, 2nd best of his generation. He hit a few huge drives with that driver.

The 64 wedge got a ton of loft, out of the rough you want high flight, stop and small roll.

Actually it hasn't even got 2/3 of a ton of loft technically speaking

I was reading golf.com and it has an interesting article on this subject.

"Nobody knows how this groove thing will play out. Club manufacturers smell blood in the water after the PGA Tour's mealy-mouthed defense of Mickelson, and now reports say that Padraig Harrington might put an old Ping wedge in play. If Harrington switches, many more will follow, and if a significant number of players are playing re-worked 20-year-old wedges, then the rule change will be a joke."

I think he will change, but it might take a while before he does.

184/189 technically speaking, last year. He has actually been getting worse too. 181st in 2008, and 191st in 2010, and the actual percentages have been getting worse too.

Phil will never win another major swinging the way he does now, especially with the driver.

He's basically won 3 majors doing it so I think he might have at least one more in him. I don't think he will ever win the US open playing that way but augusta seems to fit his game for some reason.

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
