Am I the only one that finds this "sudden" contempt for the Tavistock Cup strange. For outlets like GD and the WWL to have articles describing/criticizing the grandeur and pointlessness of this event seems mis-guided at best and two-faced at worst. Kinda like complaining about the horse escaping the barn.....but only after it's broken the front gate, gotten on the main road and is caught destroying the neighbor's yard.

I don't get it, it's not a great event, but if they don't like it, don't watch it. That's what I'm doing.

What is not to like? I have nothing other golf related to watch on a Monday/Tuesday in March.

More golf footage=good.

I don't have a recent GD and I don't know what "the WWL" is, so I can't comment on the specific comments.

I must be out of the loop today, because from what I saw last night on TV, The Tavistock Cup was the golfyest thing I've seen on the Golf Channel (other than the European tour) in ages. Notwithstanding David Feherty's typical jackassery - just ask your question and go away!

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

I havent heard much bashing of it.. Its a competition between two clubs that have many tour players as members. One of which just happens to be Tiger Woods. And being Tiger usually plays in the tavistock, of course the cameras want to be there.

I like it myself. It's nice to see a more casual event once in a while. Plus much of the money go's to charity. So whats the beef?

It's been bashed for years to varying degrees. So what - it's a small interclub tournament. I don't really care about it enough to bash it. I've tuned in on occasion but was busy this year and so didn't watch it. Big "meh" from me.

It's probably taken abuse because it's seen as a luxury tournament that's not really necessary, run by people with a lot of money.Anything like that is going to take some flack with the economy recovering from it's worst period in 50 years.Hypocritical on a lot of people's part, but that's how people are.I've also heard a few media outlets complaining about being forced to wear either Isleworth or Lake Nona colours. It has seemed to hit a nerve with a lot of them but I can't see why to be honest. It's just a shirt, and what harm is it to get into the spirit of the competition?

I liked the lineups.Strong teams, more notably for Lake Nona.I did not like Feherty and McCord. They're funny the odd time but mostly cringeworthy, and seem to interfere and get in the way a little too often.
A great shot is when you go for it and pull it off. A smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it. ~ Phil Mickelson.

Honestly, I would understand if most people didn't care to watch it. It's two local Rival golf communities playing against each other, but in this case it involves professionals. Since I live in Orlando I do enjoy watching it, but if Isleworth and Lake Nona wasn't something I was familiar with, I probably wouldn't care.

I'm watching the replay of today's Tavistock Cup now... better than most other stuff on TV these days... and at least Golf Channel is not replaying the Arnold Palmer Golf Gala from '97 for the 52nd time... I have nothing but respect for Mr. Palmer but my goodness retire that show

Correct...and as I said before most of the money go's to charity. Thats mostly what it's about. The PGA should do a better job of making that known so it doesn't seem like milionairs just making more money.

I agree...b/c if you read the article I attached yesterday, you'd think this was just an event for them to make more money and for their rich neighbors to see pro golf for free.

If there's nothing to complain about or write about, the golf journalists have to make up something, I guess..................

Golf, Charity, Fun....... Sounds like a good event for the pros that are members of the 2 clubs.

    • It's from "Every Shot Has a Purpose" which was co-written by one of Annika's coaches. Decent read about reducing uncertainty and committing to the golf shot.
    • Ah, I didn't realize this was about standing over the ball versus time to play the shot. Definitely two different things there. Yea I would imagine being static over the ball/taking a long time over the ball does make things worse in the long run, hence all the waggles guys will do before pulling the trigger.
    • I'm not sure who said it first but I've seen it a lot. There's this "think box" vs "play box" theory. I've also seen it with a planning vs doing line on the ground. The idea is basically you stand away from the ball (a couple feet) and do your "think box". This is where you do your planning, your swing cues, your practice swings (if you believe in practice swings.) All of that is done in the "Think Box". Then you step into your "play box" address the ball and hit it. Sometimes it's done with a imaginary line on the ground. You do all of the think box stuff behind the line. Then once you cross the line you step up and hit it.  Here's Annika Sorenstam demonstrating the "Think box" and "Play box": So, Annika's time over the ball is really short. Because she did all of that other stuff not over the ball, but in her "Think box".  There are lots of variations on this theme. But I think you get the idea.
    • I speak for myself. If I inventory my swing thoughts, swing tempo, optimum muscle tension and rehearse a swing before I take my address, then I pull the trigger reasonably quickly with usually acceptable results. Like a proper program download before deploying it. If I don't bother to by forgetting or just not caring, I am inclined to look for my cues while hovering over the ball after taking the address, while tension builds up and then I fire with a half ass program that is still buffering. I guess that's no better than rolling a dice. In other words, a good pre-shot routine does wonders. I am not advising folks to take 13 practice swings while the flowers wilt waiting for something to happen, but one or maybe two are reasonable and good for you. I am certain hitting half ass shitty shots and making double bogey takes longer than making a par.  My desire this year is to just that as I have not developed a habit taking a practice swing and as a result have tendency to freeze over the ball after address, that is counter productive for both time and result. I think that is what @saevel25 is talking about in the OP.
