Hello,
I have noticed in quite a few articles ive read that discuss the topic golf, there is this statistic that pops up every so often. It says that 90% of golfers shoot over 100. I fine this very interesting and was just wondering if you guys have any ideas to why 90% of golfers shoot such high scores. THANK YOU!!!

I could believe that. It's definitely around 90% at the course I play at. 90% of golfers probably come over the top as well. Me included.

Hello,

That's because 90% of the golfers don't use "The Hammer" Powww! hahaha

But the real reason is 90% of golfers have jobs and not a lot of time to practice like the pros do, which is usually 8+ hours a day

That's a boost for my ego. Now I'm scoring consistently in the 90s, I can tell people I'm in the top 10% of golfers in the world...

I find that hard to belive that only 1 in 10 golfers break 100. 90% of golfers not being able to break 80 is something more beliveable.

if each person had to play the ball as it lies and couldn't use any mulligans, i'd believe 90% of people couldn't shoot under 100. there are a lot of people out there who claim to shoot this or that or the other, but you watch them play and it's a mulligan here, moving the ball a club length there, improving their lie over there... take all that away and yeah, they'd probably really have to knuckle down and focus to get under 100.

In my experience, less than 10% of recreational golfers adhere to the rules (or even care about them). Rolling their ball to a better lie, mulligans, gimmees, etc. seems to be the norm.

Not sure how that equates to US handi but 16 sounds very low. A 16 HCP breaks 90 on a regular basis. I would expect it to be closer to 25. I suppose it all depends on what they consider to be a golfer. Someone who plays once a month or someone who plays twice a year.

Wow, yeah i would agree with that. theres about 30 million golfers in the US, roughly, so that means there are 27 million who shoot over 90...

What is a golfer. Someone who plays twice a year. Then yeah, 90%. If you play on a regular basis and don't break 100, that can't be fun. And looking at USGA handicaps isn't going to give an accurate number. I bet only 1 out of every four players has a ghin number.

I'd be surprised if its that high. As a for instance, league play in my area is very popular but each league seems to have its own handicapping system, maintained by their secretary, and a GHIN* is not required. Out of all my buddies that I play with, I'm the only one that maintains one and the local chapter of the

ASGA that I'm a member of, just a handful seem to keep their GHIN* updated and thats if they have one. Or maybe this is only true in this area. *or recognized equivalent

Absolutely this. Think of it this way - how many 'golfers' do you know that have ever hit three off the tee after going OB? For most people, it's "Oops, lost my ball. I'll just drop here (with or without a stroke penalty, depending on how honest the person is feeling)".

90% of golfters play 3 or 4 times a year.....they go out to have fun, play in scrambles, hack the ball around, and most of them can't break 110, much less 100.....these are my favorite people of all.....they are a great source of used clubs
