On the back of 3 of the best rounds of my Golfing life I went out today with supreme confidence and couldn't wait to get to the first tee...
Alas it was disaster hole after disaster hole and I shot a score that I use to get 5 years ago when I first started
I hit every bloody tree on the course and found ever water hazard even the ones behind me ....
I shanked it,I chunked it, I sliced it I,I hooked it.
I hate this game and will never play again.......

Well maybe I will give it one more chance,I have a 9am tee time in the morning and I can't wait

Thats what I love about this game!!! I think I actually like it more when I go through the bad times. Its fun trying to beat the deamons. One of the worst winters ever for me. Shot #s I haven't reached since high school. Been playing more and at the range more in the last month than in the last 2 years and loved every minute of it. Finally see light at the end of the tunnel. If it was an easy game it would not be near as fun!!!

I've certainly had my share of those rounds. Funny how we keep coming back for more punishment. I guess an outsider wouldn't understand, I'm not sure I even understand, but we keep coming back don't we?

I had the same thing happen to me last week. I shot 3 of my best rounds ever, an 87, 88 and 91............ And then went out last Sunday and shot a whopping 106..... I was so mad, I didn't want to play anymore. Until my buddy called me this morning, and invited me out again. So I went out and shot a 97. Not good, but a lot better than last weekend, for sure. At least it was my putting today and not everything.......... I had a 4 putt today, I'm surprised my head didn't explode.

Really tho, I shot a 82 and a 104 in the same month. Its just golf. I cant wait till my next 5 rounds so I can wipe off that 104.....

I'm trying something different this year. My goal is to break 90 consistently but I put too much pressure on myself to do it. I've decided the only way to put myself at ease is to play to par every hole. That means on a par 3 just get my tee shot onto the green, par 5 don't go for the 200+ yard shot to get in for birdie, and for par 4 just try to get my 3rd shot, whatever it may be, to within 10-15 feet of the cup.

Of course, during my golfing trip last week I completely disbanded my new goal and did some crazy stuff. I was all over the place. 101, 113, 94, 104, 94!! Handicap took a huge hit, knocked (2) 90 rounds off. But I'm looking forward to Monday and going out again.

I agree with Meddle, nobody on the outside can understand.

We all have our ups and downs. Some days you will hit the ball so pure that people think we're pros and other days you will be shanking, topping, slicing, hooking and hitting the ball fat so bad that people would think we'd never played golf before.
Thats part of the beauty of this game: its an endless challenge.
All you can do is go out there, do your best and accept the result. If you let this game get inside your head, it will eat you alive.

My round may be affected by that because apperently there is a stench coming with it which ,may reach me tommorrow

Think we can all relate, Paddy. I recently had the revelation that the only time golf makes me unhappy is when I'm actually playing. Thinking about it makes me happy, talking about it makes me happy, watching it makes me happy... Sadly, playing is often a different story.

Go figure!

No doubt about that. I have had people at the beginning of a round scoff and say... "Yeah, 23 handicap. Right!" Then, by about the 12th tee... they're looking at me and going... "Ohhhhh, now I see where the 23 handicap comes from."

I have the ability to string together a whole bunch of REAL pure shots that make even MYSELF wonder how I can be a high handicapper. I also have an equally strong ability to string together a bunch of pure crap shots. Holes 10 through 14 of my last round show that perfectly. Quintuple Bogey - Triple Bogey - Triple Bogey - Triple Bogey - Triple Bogey I love the game... but at times, I believe the game hates me. CY

I am going to agree with those that consider a bad shot as nothing more than a chance to hit the next one better, because we have all been there with horrible shots. I play with a very good player who claims he enjoys inventing ways to recover from bad shots -- he considers it part of the challenge of golf. I feel this way too. I hit some really bad shots and wind up in tough places. Once I get to my ball, the focus is totally shifted to how can I hit a really good, best choice shot from this otherwise crappy condition. When it turns out well, it actually makes me happy. When it turns out great, it feels as good as a birdie or eagle.

I once was playing tennis with a guy who had won three Wimbledon titles. However, he was getting into his early forties, and the chances of another tournament win were not too great. I asked him why he continued to compete so intensely in the game, because he played every shot to its fullest. I will never forget his answer. He said each match he played was an adventure and a chance to hit a shot he had never hit before. Golf is just like that. Every shot is a chance to hit a shot you have never hit before. Otherwise, we would all go crazy or get mad because we already know golf is a game that we will never master. The best players in the world have all hit shots that duffers would hit... and duffers can hole out a shot that the best pros likely would not make in a hundred tries.

This likely does not make you any happier about your bad round, but trust me, when you finally get to the stage where a bad shot vanishes from your head and you can focus only on hitting the next shot really well -- you will hit fewer bad shots.

Ben Hogan once said that he expected to hit 8 bad shots in each round. I think that if Mr Hogan can allow himself 8 bad shots per round, the rest of us can learn to not be so hard on ourselves.

    • On my trip at Bandon. I have a couple of best shots come to mind. I had kind of a stupidly good short game shot out of some nasty stuff. I didn't really make any bombs putting.  I could say any drive I hit straight that was hitting directly into the wind, lol. That was nasty. I literally hit a ball like 150 yards right. I am going with my drive on hole 18 at Old MacDonald. 469 yard par 4, down wind. The narrowest fairway on the course, and you have to navigate two sets of bunkers. I stripe one down the middle, catch the slope and have to roll out to about 95 yards to the pin. So yea, that 370-ish drive in the fairway on a 469 par 4 wins the shot of the week.
    • Day 2: mirror work while watching some TV. Checking on some backswing stuff primarily - making sure I’m still steep enough in the backswing.
    • Day 88 (28 Jul 25) - Short session this afternoon after a full day of yard work at the house.  Worked on setup and tempo thru the shot with the 52° wedge in the backyard.  Hit about 20 balls total - just staying focused on the process.
    • Day 10: More putting with the metronome. Short putts feel really slow and long putts feel really fast. Getting more comfortable every day.
    • Day 301 - 2025-07-28 Watched a lot of golf today at Fox Chapel, but then came home and did some mirror work. Re-dedicated. Which is saying something, as I've been playing okay. But relying on my athleticism to just do "okay."
