You're about 50 yards short of the average Internet Golfer

Seriously though, it's more important that you know you can hit 150 yards, and do it consistently.

I played a round with my uncle, hes a 25 HC ,i havent gone for mine yet,he's always telling me what club to play ,how to do this and that and it really is getting me annoyed..im 35 for crying out loud,i wish hed just play his own game.On sunday i hit a bad put it was no way near close,so straight away my uncle shouts out that was noway near the hole,he said he would never buy a blade putter like mine(a scotty cameron newport 2.5) try this one he said his is an oddyssey two ball,i mean he probably hasnt even heard of a scotty...any way my point is on this par 3 (154 yards) he pulls out his #4 hybrid and hits his shot short of the front edge of the green by about 10 yards,i pulled out my 6 iron ,straight away he says thats no way near enougth club,i hit the center of the green with it....does anyone else put up with unwanted advice....by the way i hammered him 87 to me 98 to him....

I'd say the average golfer I get paired with hits a 7 iron on a 150 yard par 3.......granted, it's all relative....last week, a guy hit PW pin high from that distance, while another guy in the group hit his hybrid, and both hit good shots....

Phil hit his 6-iron a week or so ago from 210

150 yards with a 6-iron isnt bad for an average person. I hit mine about 170.

I played a course on Thursday with a trickly little par 3. It's 155 yards to the middle of the green from the survey plate.

I've hit PW in there when the pin's on the front with no wind and knockdown 8 irons when the flag is in the middle. On Thursday there was a slight breeze against and pin was at the back - I hit a pretty solid 6-iron and was ~ 5 yards short of the pin. Does that mean I typically hit PW 155 yards? What about my 6-iron? Don't judge your distance against other players. Par is the only number that matters .

I hit my 6i around 150-160 yards. From what I can tell, that's a pretty solid distance. It might be at the low end of claimed lengths on this forum, but out in the real world, distance is not really a problem for me. My instructor thinks I hit a perfectly reasonable distance.

I hit mine 150 yards. I wish it were more, but I'm coming around to thinking this is about average. But it wasn't too long ago my 6-iron distance was 130 yards, so I'm not complaining too loudly about 150.

160 on flat ground with no wind.

Don't forget that the pros not only have better swings, but they also have their irons bent to custom lofts. Phil's 6 iron is probably one in name only. I'd guess it's probably bent closer to the loft of my 4 iron.

I could hit a 6 iron 250 with right club (if I stuck a 6 iron label on my driver)!

That's fairly solid, and you shooting 87 when you haven't got a handicap yet is pretty cool! In competitions i play, most men hit hybrids into greens that my friend hit 7 irons into. Sounds like you don't like your uncle on the course :) I hit my 6 iron 170-175

I wouldn't compare your distance, it's knowing what club hits what yardage.

As for what seems to be the bigger issue in this thread, have you ever mentioned your concerns to your Uncle? Why not just try telling him you don't like receiving unsolicited advice? If he responds poorly to that then find a new playing partner

I think he could offer his uncle some advice - "a hybrid, are you sure? You should get your testosterone levels checked, this is a 6-iron at best!".

Exactly right!!!! I played in a foursome today with some friends. We've played a lot of golf together but never as a group at my new home track...point being, yardages on the 5 par 3's were something new to discuss (we are fairly loose with this type of conversation...nothing too serious, just share yardages). Anyway three of us are mid level hacks and one guy is a decent player. One of the hacks kept asking him on every par3 tee...what club did you just hit? My opinion is that is a dangerous question. Two entirely different games, two different swings....the single digit's club selection was irrelevant as far as I'm concerned. I'd say your 6 iron carry is spot-on....a good stock distance.

The only number that matters is the one that goes on the card. It doesn't matter if you hit a 6i 120 yards if you are shooting good scores that will keep anyone quiet.

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
