If you are 150 from the center of the green, pin in the center, how often do you miss the green? Where is your typical miss? How far off the green?
Also, (I struggle with the fats) do you have to make a conscious effort not to hit it fat? Or is clean contact just a byproduct of a solid swing?

It took me over 20 years to realize that to lower my scores consistently I need a better short game which is putting and chipping around the green, this means anywhere from 10 yards - 50 yards off the green.

If you practice making solid contact with your short game, chipping and pitch shots within 50 yards the benefit is lower scores, less putts and more up and down. The other benefit is a better golf swing. I will tell you why, if you make solid contact with your wedges you will make solid contact from 150 yards out also. If you are hitting your irons shots fat from 150 yards out you are most likely hitting your pitch shots fats also. If you practice chipping and pitching and learn to make solid consistent contact you will also benefit your iron play since you are practicing in the hitting or impact zone with the short game. Focus your attention on your set up and your backswing with you chipping, pitching and 150 yards golf swing.

If I were 150 yards out how often do I miss the green? maybe 30 - 40% of the time is my guess. my typical missed are to the left and I might be just off the green within 10 yards. Another trick for hitting more greens from 150 yards is to take more club if you hit it flush you will still be at the back of the green and if you miss the shot you will still be in the front of the green.

I probably miss the green 50% of the time. Im a decent chipper and putter, which helps getting up and down. Im usually pin high regardless of a miss. I miss left more than right. When left I usually dont complete my backswing, I get quick, and my hands get way out in front of everything else. TEMPO TEMPO TEMPO

Usually 150 is my perfect full 9 iron (stock fade). Or, if I'm having that kind of day, a 3/4 8 iron. Honestly, I might miss the green 2-3 times out of 10. It's a really comfortable yardage and the 8 and 9 irons are my favorite clubs. If I do miss it, it's usually always short. Sometimes to the right, but mostly short due to a lackadaisical swing.

Fats? I got this.

Go into a bunker when no ones around. Draw a straight line with your club however long you prefer. (you can always draw another one... it's sand). Stand so the line is where your ball would be if you were hitting one [address the line (ball)]. Take a swing and try and hit past the line. Not on it, or before it. Once you've made that swing, move up a couple inches and try and do it for the length of the line you've drawn. Do this until you can repeat it every time. You'll be amazed at how much better your ball striking will be after this.

Since I learned DOCF a month ago the fat shots that plagued me since I started five years ago have disappeared. Completely.

i dont get this, is the line drawn parallel to your feet or perpendicular. Or is the first line drawn perpendicular to the feet and you wanna hit after the line and the second parellel to your feet and you wanna hit for the length of the line? and to TM22, whats DOCF

Well, this can be a slightly difficult question to answer. For a longer hitter, it could be easier because you'd be hitting a shorter club. But ANYWAYS,
I'd probably miss it 20% of the time? 150 is a stock 9 iron(fade) for me, so it's a little easier than if you're hitting a 7. But My BEST key, as in, what helps me the most, is picking a dimple above the equator of the ball, towards the right center, and trying to hit that dimple. My normal miss is a pull. So left would be my miss.

I hit my irons a long way, i expect myself to hit the green from 7-iron or less. 4,5,6 irons are a different story, but 7-iron or less, if i can get the yardage i am pretty confident it should go a 2-3 yard draw.

From 150 yards out, I'd either hit 8i or 9i, depending on where the pin is. I should be hitting more of these, because my misses are generally pin-high. When I'm concentrating well, and lining up the clubface properly (like yesterday) the odds are in my favour.

I've never had issues with hitting them fat, but when I played Pinseeker blades for a couple months (> 15 years ago) I took really big divots. Those were not the irons for me.

I would like to stress something. Never swing as hard as you can. I'm sure you know this, but if you don't, you'll find you'll hit more greens.
I can push a PW up to 160. Will I ever do it? Rarely. I'm fine hitting a 9 or 8 that far. The smoother the swing, the lower the score.
Like AK said;
If I have to hit a 5 instead of a 6, I'm fine with that.
So what gets the ball in the hole faster. Any way necessary.

I would say I can hit it 60-70% of the time on a good day. I would, in calm sea level conditions, be right on the edge between gentle 8 and hard 9. I tend to miss the greens to the rear the most (I.E., taking too much club, swinging easy, but not cutting enough distance off), so if I was striking it well that day, the 9 would be a better choice. The firmness of the greens are also an issue. Nice soft greens, soft 8 no problem, firm greens, hard 9.

Solid 8-iron or hard 9-iron for me. I'm pretty accurate at this sort of distance so I reckon I might miss maybe 20%. Misses almost always slight, straight blocks.

TM22, whats DOCF

DOCF is diametrically opposed circular forces. At setup and throughout the swing, aim opposing forces of the left and right side toward the target. For consistency, nothing else matters.

Can you explain this a little more fully? Im not following at all.

I guess we're talking yards....

I'd hit a 7 iron and the ball would land on the green in about 3/10 times. I sometimes hit a push (the ball travels to the right of the target), so if I miss it it would probably land somewhere right of the target. P.S. You people really can hit a 9 iron so far?

I guess we're talking yards....

Yes. But I workout constantly and I'm a big guy. Plus my swing is designed to hit the ball straight.

Strength+Swing design= Long straight shots(Most of the time ;))

I dont miss this shot too often. Smooth 9i. Ill just play it to about 140 in the air and ill get some release because of the smooth swing. If i do miss it is usually long and left because i got to quick and pulled the shot.
