It took me quite awhile. Two country clubs where I caddied in high school did not let caddies play, so I played about three times a month during summers when I could get a ride to a public course. Broke 90 on occasion, but the birdie just wouldn't come.

Freshman year of college, I was a scrub on the junior college golf team. Second round of the year, on No. 9, a 405-yd. par 4. Hit a drive about 250 yds. down the middle, hit a 7 iron that bit six feet below the flag, and sank the putt. It's the first time I ever went non-verbal on a putt. Rather than self-talk, I just envisioned the ball taking a slight break left and going in the hole. It worked.

Second birdie came the next day. On the 440-yd. par 4 No. 8, put a drive down the middle. Hit a 2 iron shot that landed on front of green and rolled up three feet to the right of the cup. Bingo - non-verbal worked again.

Nice job. Mine came 3 months into golf. It was a 40 yard pitch over water with my cousin's sand wedge that spun back about 15-20 feet and rolled down the slight downhill into the hole. It took me another 4 months to get another birdie which was a 2 foot putt on a par 4 after I hit my 8-iron from the rough about 130 yards.

Nice man!!! I remember my first one. It was actually on a par 5 that was downhill and about 480ish yards. My drive was perfectly down the middle and I remember it was just one of those days where I was in the zone driving wise. Well I was set up to a bit farther than I thought for any club in my bag and decided to just rip it. There was actually a group on the green but in my mind I thought that there was no way I was reaching the green in 2. Well I hit the most perfect 3-wood that bounced a bit in front and rolled up to the green and about 15 feet from the pin. The guys in front of us were actually kind of upset, but when I apologized and explained the situation to them they laughed it off. I didn't make the eagle putt and all I could think of was not 3-putting for par. I still made the second putt :)

first birdie was my first time on a course. i remember being extremely nervous the whole day and had almost hit someone walking off the green on the first hole. i actually don't remember the details except that i was able to drive the green on a par 4, must of been short. this was back when i was gripping and ripping it and got lucky. get up to the green, up to this day i've never even practiced putting besides mini golf. was able to 2 putt luckily. thinking back on it, probably should of saved that ball.

Just wanted to report that i got my first birdie ever today and then followed it up with another on the next hole ! The golf gods were out in force...
The first one was pretty fluky - hit the tee shot to just short of the green on a 160m Par 3, about 50 ft to the pin but a pretty weirdly sloped green - pulled out the trusty PW and landed the ball on a small hill from which it curved left to inexorably get in the hole ! Pretty darn great feeling , i can tell you that !

congrats, the first one is always the hardest. My first came 2 years ago on labor day at crooked creek golf in mt vernon il. 1st hole, short par 4, only about 280 yards but have to lay up short of the green for pond. Hit 4 hybrid and pw and actually missed the green by about 5 feet, then chipped in from about 35 ft for birdie. My last was at mcleansboro about a month ago, drove the short 245 yard 3rd hole and 2 putted for birdie. I still dont get very many, maybe one a month if i play a lot so they still mean a lot to me, still working on first eagle, may never get that.

Congrats! It is a great feeling to have birdies. Without that strong exciting feeling, 80% of us wouldnt be playing still because the bad holes are hard to deal with at times. We need the euphoria of the great holes to get us coming back. I forget my first birdie and eagle, but will NEVER forget my first (and only) double eagle. I was out teaching my father-in law how to play and it was brutal because he was terrible. I chip in on the first hole for birdie and he doesnt see it. The 3rd hole was a short par 5 (489 yards). I hit driver down the middle. He takes about 6 shots before i get to hit my second shot. I hit my Taylormade Titanium Burner Raylor (still my favorite after about 14 years) on the screws. The green is down below a mound so I didnt see where it landed but know it has to be on the green or close. About 9 shots later we get up to the green and I cant find my ball. I finally say "Hey Clyde go look in the hole and see if my ball is in there". He wants over, and sure enough, picks it up out of the hole and tosses it back to me. Then he says, "does my putt go right or left?" I couldn't believe it. I just hot a DOUBLE FREAKIN EAGLE and not even a "Great Shot!" or "Awesome!". He couldnt appreciate it. The chip-in on #1, par on #2, and double eagle on #3, and nobody to celebrate with. Figures.

Funny I don't remember my first Birdie. (and I have not had 100s of them) I remember my first one since I came back from a 12 year absence. Par 4 slight dogleg to the right that went down hill to the green. Pulled tee shot left under a tree. Had to hit a knockdown 5 iron draw around a tree in front of me. Hit it almost perfect and the ball hooked down with overspin and on to the green about 15 feet below the hole. It was tough to read the break but somehow I figured out it was going to go about a cup left to right. Made a perfect stroke on the ball and it went right down the heart. I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!

Number 2 this year. Chipped in from just off the green on long par 4 uphill.

Number 3 this year during our member/member downhill 12 footer that I had seen a player before me putt near the same line. It was straight as an arrow. (without seeing his putt I would not have thought that) I commited and hit another perfect putt and watched it roll with a nice pace straight down and into the cup! Did I mention I lost this game!

Now I remember my first of 2 Eagles like yesterday!

following up on my post from Friday(my first birdie), i almost shot my first eagle today ! 340 mtr Par 4 - smoked the drive so it was right in line with the 100m marker, the 9 iron sailed high and long , landed on the green and rolled within a few inches of the hole - however, it kept on going and ended up about 5 feet away. Inevitably, i lipped the birdie putt and had to settle for par, but it was a good experience nonetheless !

Im about 2 months playing and cant wait for that first birdie.... i have probably played around 12-14 rounds of 9 holes.........

so far i missed my first best chance of a birdie on a short par 4 (300 yds) easiest hole on the course i play....perfect drive on fairway about 210 yds. hit PW 90 yds.... leaving me with a downhill putt of 5 feet or so............ missed the putt ugh!!!

this other time i thought for sure..... 460 par 5.... nice driver 220 middle of fairway--- then a 3 wood about 180 still on fairway...... ( first time i have hit both clubs with good distance and on the fairway) leaving me with a short 60 yds with a SW..on 3rd shot..... i thought for sure i would get this on the green..... worst wedge shot ever--- thinned it soo bad... ( the next two practices i only hit the SW...lol )

last round i had 3 birdie put chances ( although 2 of them where putts of over 20-25 feet so i wasnt expecting to make those)--- just happy to have par & bogey on afterwards........

IN total i probably have had 5 birdie chances while being on the Green... with 2 being short puts of 5 feet or less----- soon enough i hope to get my first one....- im excited!!!! it will come..Lots of practice and hard work and it will payoff one day.... my best chances on are the par 4 300 yds and a par 3 110 yds on the course i play.. going to play 3 rounds this weekend.... come on now!!!

I always keep the ball and write the date and course on it. In two years I haven't reached a dozen balls.

Congatulations.

I did it today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow!!! very excited..... saved the ball and will write the date and course.... awesome!!!

i played 36 holes today... was at the club all day. walked 18 first then used the cart for the second round...... i birdied on the second round on hole no. 17... its one of easiest on the course..a 300 yd par 4 with narrow fairway and woods to the right and left.... i actually teed off with a 5 iron....(my second round i was struggling with the driver but crushing this iron all day) hit it about 180 yds straight down the fairway and then hit a pw 120 yds ...landed just right right of the hole.... leaving me with a 5 or 6 foot putt for birdie..... and booom... got it done.... i finished 52 on front 9 and 44 on the second 9 on ,y second round....... first round i did not keep score...played as pratice... i struggled with my SW all day....hitting way too hard and messing up my approach shots... but the back 9 played much better..... what a great day.....

Congrats! Here is my first birdie experience.

Yesterday (21 June) I got my first birdie, it was on a short par 4 (231 yards) with water between the tee box and the green at the Country Club of Miami. I skipped this hole the first three times I played because I knew my drive would go into the water. My tee shot (245 yards) landed on the back side of the green in the rough. I used a 7 iron to do a bump and run that someone showed me a few years back which landed about 2 ½ feet from the cup. The green was on a right to left slant with a decent amount of break. I aimed to the right of the cup and gave it a nice tap and heard the beautiful sound of it dropping into the cup. Luckily my daughter was there with me. She said “Dad that was 3 hits, that’s a birdie, right?”

I hope this is my first of many. I get to play about twice a week so hopefully I get better quickly. I still haven't calculated my handycap but assume it is horrible but practice makes perfect.

    • In the old days, pre-2020, "playing to your handicap" meant a net score about equal to the Course Rating.  that led to problems when people played against each other from different tees, people playing tees with a lower CR would generally shoot lower scores.  Course Handicaps were adjusted for each competition to make it even, usually lowering the course handicap for the "forward tee" players. So now if you "play to your handicap", the (68.4-72) term means your score will be even par, no matter which tees you play from.  No adjustment needed for people playing from different tees.  Look at your example, the guy shoots 82 every time, his Course Handicap of 10 gives him an even par net score every time.
