I would like to find out if anyone out there who has custom fitted their driver and experiencing good results. In general, how much further do you get? 10 yards, 20 yards?

I'm thinking of going for custom fitting for my driver. I'm driving my current 09 burner around 220-240 yards even though my 7 iron can go 165 yards. Does this look weird to you?

Yes , it will give you some distance and consistency , but you still need the right swing and club head speed to give you more distance.

I have a custom fit driver... fit for me by Titlesit staff on a range with launch monitor, etc. They had about 250 different driver, shaft and loft combinations, and we were hitting Pro V1's fo the testing. It was a really cool setup with launch monitors and computers and I recommend a true custom fit to anyone.

At the time, I was using a Great Big Bertha 9 degree driver and I carried the ball about 240/245 yards. After my fitting, my carry distance increased to 265/270 yards. This was simply the result of having a properly fit driver. I've been using that driver for 8 years (including a long layoff from the game). I would like to get a new driver now, but I won't until I can get one under very similar conditions. It's very easy to have confidence in a driver when you know it's the best driver to fit your swing

Glad to hear your experience has been so good, Iceman... So good that you're still hitting, what, a Titleist 975D?

Have heard very few, if any, stories about fittings gone awry, provided they're as thorough as Iceman's. Looking forward to a fitting when I'm next in the market.

Getting fitted for a club, especially where you can compare different clubs quantitatively to see which style and brand best suits you is always a positive. But don't expect that to suddenly make you better with the driver. The fact is the driver is the hardest club in your bag to hit. This is a combination of the fact that it's the longest, has the least amount of loft, and also it's the club that you swing the widest, longest, and hardest. It's real easy to get a driver in a bad position in your swing and then your body is forced into some kind of compensation so that you can hit the ball, but it is those compensations that have such a dramatic (and detrimental) effect on your ball flight. Most of us have the strenght and speed to hit a driver a really long way, but the mechanics of the swing and the driver itself can work counter to that effort. You might want to consider some form of lesson(s) in order to address the underlying causes of your driver woes prior to getting fit for a driver.

haha... no, I hated that driver. I never found one that I could hit well. I'm hitting Titleist 975J, 9.5 degree. 312cc (pretty small head for a driver these days) I was fit from a Tour Van, so that's probably why I had such a good experience, and it was arranged by a friend who played on the Nationwide Tour or Nike Tour or Buy.com Tour or whatever it was called at the time

I'm planning on getting fit for a new driver on Friday, there's a Titleist Advanced Fitting Systems at a course about 20km from my house.

Being custom-fit for a driver is like getting your car tuned by an auto mechanic. It will help if you go to a good, competent professional fitter . The difficulty is figuring out who is giving you legitimate numbers on the distance and accuracy of the clubs, and who is trying to sell you the newest expensive driver with whatever shaft they can squeeze into what's left of your budget.

Now a days its almost a formality to have all your clubs and balls fitted for your swing and preference. So with that said I would highly recommend it. If you are comparing new technology with new technology then driver distance will come down to your swing and conditioning. With custom fitting and some help with a pro will increase your distance and accuracy significantly. But yes custom fitting will do you good.

the club head wont affect your distance that much, unless you are upgrading from a driver that is probably over 5 years old. Most drivers will be with in the same distance of each other. I find getting the lie, right loft, and shaft right is the key. Its good to get fitted, i just switched to a x-stiff shaft and i stopped spraying my drives all over the place, a bit more tight shot dispersion.

I was under the impression you didn't change the lie on a driver?

That's what i thought too. But the truth is very different. I went to the club fitter today and tried both the burner 09 and a nakashima. The smash factor is around the same (1.49), but the ball speed is about 10mph less on the burner even though the swing speed is around the same of 95mph. I was told this is due to the material of the clubhead. No offense to burner or the people who swear by it. But there must be a different or anyone could use a very old club head and just reshaft it and hit it as long.

    • When you've been teaching golf as long as I have, you're going to find that you can teach some things better than you previously had, and you're probably going to find some things that you taught incorrectly. I don't see that as a bad thing — what would be worse is refusing to adapt and grow given new information. I've always said that my goal with my instruction isn't to be right, but it's to get things right. To that end, I'm about five years late in issuing a public proclamation on something… When I first got my GEARS system, I immediately looked at the golf swings of the dozens and dozens of Tour players for which I suddenly had full 3D data. I created a huge spreadsheet showing how their bodies moved, how the club moved, at various points in the swing. I mapped knee and elbow angles, hand speeds, shoulder turns and pelvis turns… etc. I re-considered what I thought I knew about the golf swing as performed by the best players. One of those things dated back to the earliest days: that you extend (I never taught "straighten" and would avoid using that word unless in the context of saying "don't fully straighten") the trail knee/leg in the backswing. I was mislead by 2D photos from less-than-ideal camera angles — the trail leg rotates a bit during the backswing, and so when observing trail knee flex should also use a camera that moves to stay perpendicular to the plane of the ankle/knee/hip joint. We have at least two topics here on this (here and here; both of which I'll be updating after publishing this) where @mvmac and I advise golfers to extend the trail knee. Learning that this was not right is one of the reasons I'm glad to have a 3D system, as most golfers generally preserve the trail knee flex throughout the backswing. Data Here's a video showing an iron and a driver of someone who has won the career slam: Here's what the graph of his right knee flex looks like. The solid lines I've positioned at the top of the backswing (GEARS aligns both swings at impact, the dashed line). Address is to the right, of course, and the graph shows knee flex from the two swings above. The data (17.56° and 23.20°) shows where this player is in both swings (orange being the yellow iron swing, pink the blue driver swing). You can see that this golfer extends his trail knee 2-3°… before bending it even more than that through the late backswing and early downswing. Months ago I created a quick Instagram video showing the trail knee flex in the backswing of several players (see the top for the larger number): Erik J. The Issues with Extending the Trail Knee You can play good golf extending (again, not "straightening") the trail knee. Some Tour players do. But, as with many things, if 95 out of 100 Tour players do it, you're most likely better off doing similarly to what they do. So, what are the issues with extending the trail knee in the backswing? To list a few: Pelvic Depth and Rotation Quality Suffers When the trail knee extends, the trail leg often acts like an axle on the backswing, with the pelvis rotating around the leg and the trail hip joint. This prevents the trail side from gaining depth, as is needed to keep the pelvis center from thrusting toward the ball. Most of the "early extension" (thrust) that I see occurs during the backswing. Encourages Early Extension (Thrust) Patterns When you've thrust and turned around the trail hip joint in the backswing, you often thrust a bit more in the downswing as the direction your pelvis is oriented is forward and "out" (to the right for a righty). Your trail leg can abduct to push you forward, but "forward" when your pelvis is turned like that is in the "thrust" direction. Additionally, the trail knee "breaking" again at the start of the downswing often jumps the trail hip out toward the ball a bit too much or too quickly. While the trail hip does move in that direction, if it's too fast or too much, it can prevent the lead side hip from getting "back" at the right rate, or at a rate commensurate with the trail hip to keep the pelvis center from thrusting. Disrupts the Pressure Shift/Transition When the trail leg extends too much, it often can't "push" forward normally. The forward push begins much earlier than forward motion begins — pushing forward begins as early as about P1.5 to P2 in the swings of most good golfers. It can push forward by abducting, again, but that's a weaker movement that shoves the pelvis forward (toward the target) and turns it more than it generally should (see the next point). Limits Internal Rotation of the Trail Hip Internal rotation of the trail hip is a sort of "limiter" on the backswing. I have seen many golfers on GEARS whose trail knee extends, whose pelvis shifts forward (toward the target), and who turn over 50°, 60°, and rarely but not never, over 70° in the backswing. If you turn 60° in the backswing, it's going to be almost impossible to get "open enough" in the downswing to arrive at a good impact position. Swaying/Lateral Motion Occasionally a golfer who extends the trail knee too much will shift back too far, but more often the issue is that the golfer will shift forward too early in the backswing (sometimes even immediately to begin the backswing), leaving them "stuck forward" to begin the downswing. They'll push forward, stop, and have to restart around P4, disrupting the smooth sequence often seen in the game's best players. Other Bits… Reduces ground reaction force potential, compromises spine inclination and posture, makes transition sequencing harder, increases stress on the trail knee and lower back… In short… It's not athletic. We don't do many athletic things with "straight" or very extended legs (unless it's the end of the action, like a jump or a big push off like a step in a running motion).
