If I painted "Pro V1" on a laquered mushroom some guys would swear by it.

ROFL !!! you made me spit soda all over my screen, lol

To the OP, slow swing speeds need a lower compression ball, and a faster swing speed needs a higher compression ball for best results ......... it's always best to test different balls and brands to see what you like best, just make sure the compression rating is correct for you and your swing speed

You know, if you really want to put this to rest, pick out a couple of balls---something from the $20/dozen range and a premium ball---and alternate rounds with them for a year. Keep track of which rounds use which ball. At the end of the year, compare the scores. This should tell you whether it makes a difference or not. If you play a lot, you may not need a full year, but I would strongly recommend that a scientific approach here is the right one. I see too many people who make a change based on one round, or even just a few practice holes, and become convinced that the ball has changed their game. It might have, and certainly that's an ok reason to decide to switch, but there's a lot that can go on from one round to the next that could overwhelm the differences due to the ball. Even in a fitting, it's hard to know for sure how the results translate to score, especially since you don't get to play the ball for chip shots or putts. Again, the fitting can provide useful clues, and isn't a bad idea, but it's not a conclusive answer.

For low handicappers who are consistent enough, this many not be necessary, but for higher handicappers I think this is really the way to put it to rest.

From my 40 years playing experience, I'd say Ball will have very small impact on your score. That said: I very much like the feel of the E6 and have been playing it for couple of years now.

I swear by the Bridgestone e6 (27 bucks), however, I often use the Srixon ad333 (20 bucks). Everyone has a different swing, and I think matching yourself with the right ball is as simple as analyzing your tendencies and the common traits found on the back of each box of balls. I use the e6 to minimize spin, and it works great. Most balls have images like this on the back of the box... I can bet you'll find a box with your tendency as an example of what a ball will avoid haha

I am in the about same class as Texas Solo, played Pinnacle Gold, Titleist and Spalding Tour Edition in the old days. Even played Balata Titleist Tour balls about 20 yrs ago (wasn't fun, cutting a dozen balls in 18 holes) and when I started all over again about half a year ago I started with the 150 balls that I still had, most of them being Pinnacle Gold, some Tour Edition and a whole bunch of Wilson Ultra's. Actually in shops today these are still the brands they sell. Never thought that balls would have been improved so much over the years.

One of my current golfmates (hc 6.4) swears by the AD333..... long from the tee, soft feel around the green......, but somehow hard to get overhere.

I tried several other of the modern balls and was advised to try the NXT Tour ...... complete disaster ...... with the old balls I mostly play at least a full round with one ball, straight drives no problem and high 5 iron, will mostly hold on the green....... the complete sleeve went into the woods before the 10th, took an old Ultra out of the bag..... Boingggg straight drive...... tell me .....

Went to another shop, salesclerk totally fond of the Bridgestone e5-e7 ...... so I went out with the e5 (like to work the ball, which might be difficult with the reduced side spin of the e6) ...... still have to try these, but I like the design behind them.

But I don't think a better ball will lower my handicap ....... at most it may differ a stroke, maybe 2 ?

A prov1 never made a difference when I dig a 1 inch deep hole 6 inches behind the ball haha.

I think picking a ball type you like and sticking to it for a while is what matters. If you play a high spin ball one time and a low spin another time you won't be able to predict ball reaction. I can adjust to a ball that runs out more ir stops quicker if I expect it. So I tend to pick my ball based on what helps most off the tee. It is easier to adjust my short game than my long game. So after a switch there is an adjustment period. If you slice or hook, I feel it is best you don't pick a high spin ball and just include roll out in your short game. As you improve and can take advantage of the spin. If you hit it low I would look for more loft before adding spin.

My scores generally remain the same no matter if I'm playing a ProV1 or a Top Flight XL. I just have to make adjustments for the type of shots that I hit. I'm a feel player so I tend to use a softer ball. I like balls that are $20/doz or less bc the scores really arent affected and I don't feel bad when I put one in the pond.

I have played Pro V1x's for several years, then tried the Callaway Tour iX......now that ball will really stop when you hit the green! No wonder PM uses it.

That said, this year I am trying the new Maxfli Tour LC's.......urethane cover just like Pro V1 & Tour i's

Cost is about the same...but i had intro offers, buy 1 doz get 6 balls free....plus I used my dick's reward points to pay for them.

Anyway, since I am now 59, my swing speed has slowed to 87 mph.....the Maxfli Tour LC's were made for 80 - 100 mph swing speeds.

So far so good.....I like the feel, distance & greens control.

Now if they would just lower the price!

Your driver swing speed is 87? That's pretty slow - you probably need all the ball induced wedge spin you can get!

I am 59 yrs old with a shattered left wrist.

I had an inch of my hip put into my left arm so it would be the same length as my right arm (took two years & 3 extra surgeries) after the accident my left arm was 1 inch shorter. Now I have a steel t-bar and 13 screws holding it together.

I only have 70% strength in my left hand so i tend to over swing with my right.

All in all, I do pretty well ....current handicap is 17

I was suggesting you need to look at a ball with low driver spin and high wedge spin - I think balls like the NXT fit the bill.

Been there, doing that! My right leg was crushed in an accident. Three steel pins holding my right ankle together and a plate holding the right fibula together. My right leg doesn't handle the weight transfer well, so my swing speed is down to 90. Although my swing is still fairly solid, there's no power to it.
