Most annoying playing partners ever

I played with some older guys yesterday that were just starting out. Right after EVERY shot, they would yell "great shot!" and if it turned out to be not such a good shot, it was "that's ok, you can play from there." It was like they've never seen anyone hit a golf ball before.

One guy even had the nerve to yell "yes!" or "it's good!" during putts a few yards BEFORE the ball got to the hole. Most of the time the putt would miss, and he's yell "oh no! i was sure that was good." I'm proud of myself for posting a decent score given these conditions.

"Be the club", "Be right" and "That's all over it" are my favorites. I got paired up with a guy a few weeks ago that said something like that every shot. Drove me nuts. I hit a couple bad ones that day and he eventually said "I know why you're hitting those thin shots." I humor'd him and asked why. He said "you've got your feet flared out too much. You need to have your toes pointed straight out from your body". *insert face into palm*

lol! I can see how that could be annoying. I have to admit, sometimes I say things like that and I have to catch myself. I think it's more annoying when someone gets really angry and is cussing and throwing clubs. A guy I played with last week broke one of his wedges over his leg. It was great because I asked him for the head!

I have to watch myself when I try to cheer up a guy who's down on his game - how would I appreciate that? I probably wouldn't - just let me steam for a hole or two, I'll get over it.

Sometimes I'll play in a Tuesday night scramble and get stuck with the pessimistic guy..."that's no good", "gotta be closer than that", etc. To top it off, we won't even play one of his shots all night and it's like he intentionally putts off-line. I want to give him the ol' Jack Hamm...

I played with an older gentleman recently who was more interested in chatting about his retirement activities and political views. After a couple of holes I was really getting pretty annoyed. Nothing wrong with being friendly to your playing partners in a round, even strangers, but I'm much more interested in playing golf than discussing Obama.

I've had extraordinarily good luck getting paired up. Usually my partners have been either nondescript and inoffensive or very friendly, very interesting people. I think it helps being an astronomer, because a lot of people from various walks of life are interested in what I do, and it's something that a lot of people have a little background knowledge on. It makes it easy to have small talk to fill the void.

I had one partner a year or two ago who clearly felt he was an expert on the particular course and couldn't help but give advice on shots, but even he had a demeanor such that it was bearable if not ideal.

Wait... oh crap... I guess this means *I* must be the annoying guy in all the pairings...... doh.

It may be a bit annoying, but good intent and sportsmanship should never be criticized.

I'd be happy to get complements for my shots. The people I hate playing with are the ones who have tantrums on the course..... It's embarrassing to be with them.

A few years ago I might have had a different view, but after reading "Who's Your Caddy" it seems "putting your mouth" on somebody else's ball is actually bad ettiquite. The pros get very upset when their own caddy yells something like "it's in the hole," let alone someone else they are playing with. Now I can see why.

I didn't mind the guys I was playing with otherwise; they seemed like nice people. I just didn't have the heart to tell them to stop talking to my ball. Plus, what am I supposed to say when they yell "good shot," and then my ball fades away and misses the fairway? "No, actually it wasn't a good shot?" "Maybe for you it would be but I like to play from the fairway?"

Totally agree-I'm cool with any kind of outgoing, friendly behavior as long as they're not constantly giving advice, looking for every ball for 5 minutes, or getting into political discussions or telling some racist joke. 90% of the time the guys I get paired with are great.

When I was a member at a country club a couple years ago, there was one guy who would play in the Saturday morning choose-ups that was SUPER competitive. I mean, we're playing for like $5 each, and he would still outwardly root against you. The first time I experienced it, we were playing two-man best ball against him and another guy. My playing partner missed a birdie putt, and he says, "YES!" We both looked at him and thought, "Are you freaking serious??!?" I never really thought about the rule "Root for, never against", and apparently neither did this guy.
Another time, I was playing in the same foursome and having a very "off day". This guy was so pissed with me struggling that he actually suggested I quit for the day. At the bar after the round, a friend talked this guy and another player into playing two-man best ball for "some money". I honestly had no idea how much, I was just motivated to kick his ass. I went out and shot 74, and the whole time on the back nine, this guy was coming up with every reason to quit early. It turns out that my friend had arranged for us to play for $100 each, and when it was over the guy STIFFED me! Can't say I was surprised.
